Nintendo president: ‘we must keep up’ with cloud gaming tech Posted: 05 Jul 2019 06:15 PM PDT In some ways, the Nintendo Switch can already provide one of the biggest benefits of cloud gaming: the ability to sling a game from a big TV to a portable device and carry it anywhere you go. But Nintendo isn't pretending that capability is enough to weather what could be a sea change in how games are developed, played and sold. When Nintendo executives were asked at this year's annual meeting of shareholders what they thought of cloud gaming — the idea that video games can be streamed from remote internet servers rather than run on a local console — they admitted they not only believe the technology will be part of the future, but that Nintendo "must keep up" as well. Here's the whole quote from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, as... |
AMD cuts Radeon 5700 GPU prices just two days before their release Posted: 05 Jul 2019 03:02 PM PDT When AMD announced its next-gen Navi-based Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT graphics cards last month, the news was just slightly underwhelming because the prices didn't necessarily make them the obvious alternative to Nvidia's rival chips. But just two days before their July 7th launch date, AMD has taken the drastic step of dropping the prices on these new GPUs. The Radeon 5700 XT, previously listed at $450, will now cost $400, and the Radeon 5700, previously $380, will be priced at $350. (There's also a $500 Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition that'll retail for $450.) It's not clear what this means for customers who already preordered the cards, and it's also not clear whether this will be enough to head off Nvidia. Earlier this... |
LA’s earthquake warning system worked — just not how people expected Posted: 05 Jul 2019 02:51 PM PDT After a recent earthquake in Los Angeles, some residents were left wondering why their ShakeAlert LA app hadn't notified them. After all, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake rocked Ridgecrest, California, about 150 miles away, and that quake was the first test of ShakeAlert since the app was released in 2018. The system was working exactly as it was designed to, as the Los Angeles Times reported in the aftermath of the quake. While the shaking was intense in Ridgecrest, it wasn't strong enough in LA to trigger the app to alert the people in Los Angeles County. But the surprise may help ShakeAlert's makers design a system for the West Coast that's more responsive to what people actually want from an earthquake app. The designers had assumed that... |
The US Army has released its first audiobooks Posted: 05 Jul 2019 02:17 PM PDT The US Army wants its soldiers to begin listening to its training materials, which, surprisingly, has never been an option before. In recent weeks, the Training and Doctrine Command's Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate (CADD) has released audiobook versions of a pair of training manuals for the first time as part of an experiment to see if it's an effective medium to spread information to soldiers across the force. It's part of a wider effort to overhaul and modernize how the Army conceptualizes and trains its forces and, in doing so, catch up to what a large segment of the publishing industry has already realized: audiobooks are increasingly popular. CADD has a particularly important role within the Army: it's responsible for... |
Why does Amazon have so many clothing brands? Posted: 05 Jul 2019 01:57 PM PDT Today, BuzzFeed News posted a reminder of exactly how enormous and inescapable Amazon is. In a single list, reporter Leticia Miranda went through all of Amazon's various subsidiaries and sub-brands, many of which you probably haven't heard of. The usual suspects are all there — Mechanical Turk, Twitch, Audible — but there are also dozens of different clothing brands, most of which have no obvious connection to Amazon. They're the equivalent of store brands like Faded Glory (Walmart) or Goodfellow (Target), only there are way more of them than you would expect. It's not totally clear what to make of this. BuzzFeed's read is that it indicates the size and scope of Amazon's business power: "a complex web of businesses and subsidiaries that... |
Actual flight makes the Lego Apollo 11 lander set even better Posted: 05 Jul 2019 01:53 PM PDT Lego's official Apollo 11 anniversary set is pretty slick already, but aerospace engineer Adam Woodworth has made it even cooler by adding a set of propellers so that the lunar lander can actually fly, as spotted by Gizmodo. Woodworth detailed the build in an Imgur gallery, and it's seriously impressive. He hollowed out the inside of the set to make room for a battery and flight controller. (The battery is hidden inside the ascent stage half of the set, while the electronics are in the base). He also added the four T-Motor F40 spinning 4-inch propellors that allow it to actually fly. The motors are staggered to overlap so that Woodworth could actually get enough thrust from the set. He notes that the model is pretty heavy for its size,... |
Microsoft is teasing Windows 1.0 — yes, from 1985 — for a mystery Stranger Things tie-in Posted: 05 Jul 2019 12:31 PM PDT If you've been watching Microsoft's social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram this week, you probably noticed a teaser campaign for Microsoft's original Windows 1.0 operating system, which was first released in 1985. It starts out like a one-off joke or maybe a poor attempt at a nostalgic throwback for an OS that never really got much love in the first place:
But it soon becomes clear that Microsoft is building up to something...

People in Japan are renting cars but not driving them Posted: 05 Jul 2019 12:14 PM PDT Most people who spend money on car-sharing services do so because they have a destination in mind. They need transportation, and driving a car is an incredibly popular and efficient method of travel between two locations. (It's true!) But occasionally, a car is not a mode of travel, but an indoor space in a world where indoor spaces are increasingly privatized and inaccessible to many people. Japanese car-sharing service Orix discovered this recently after finding out that many of its customers were renting its cars but not driving them. As reported by The Asahi Shimbun, the company reviewed mileage records and learned that a certain number of its vehicles were being returned after having "traveled no distance." Times24 Co., a leading... |
Spider-Man: Far From Home’s post-credits scene fixes its biggest plot hole Posted: 05 Jul 2019 12:07 PM PDT Given that Spider-Man: Far From Home is a Sony film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, rather than the usual Disney film (because Sony currently holds the film development rights to Spider-Man and his rogues' gallery), it's natural enough to wonder whether Far From Home sticks with the by-now-standard Disney MCU pattern of adding extra scenes in or after the credits to tease the next film in a series, or pay off plot points from earlier in the movie. In fact, Far From Home has both a mid-credits scene and a post-credits scene, and both of them are unusually key to enjoying the film. Warning: gigantic spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home — and for Captain Marvel. What happens... |
Stranger Things season 3 goes full Aliens with its action Posted: 05 Jul 2019 12:05 PM PDT Big changes are always scary, and that's especially true for Netflix's Stranger Things. After showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer created an instant hit in 2016 with their focus on the "kids on bikes" aesthetic of Stephen King and Steven Spielberg, the question was: how long they could sustain the formula before it became stale or transformed into something unrecognizable? It's appropriate that the fear of change is the focus of season 3, which was released on July 4th. As the residents of the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, confront a shifting economy, the possibility of new relationships, and the tumults of puberty, the Duffer brothers are showing that they can also build on their past work and continue to expand the show's mythology,... |
