macOS Catalina and iOS 13 might use Face ID and Touch ID to sign onto iCloud Posted: 07 Jul 2019 11:19 AM PDT Apple appears to be testing out a new way for users to log onto iCloud.com with its next operating systems, according to 9to5Mac. The site reports that users who have installed the beta for iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and macOS Catalina can sign onto their accounts using Face ID and Touch ID, on their devices. Beta users who visit beta.icloud.com either on their beta-equipped device or on their desktop are greeted with a popup asking if the user would like to use either of those systems, and then proceeds to log them in, without requiring two-factor authentication. It seems as though it would be a convenient and logical step for the company, given that you can already unlock your devices and make purchases with Apple Pay using either system. 9... |
Watch the first trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan Posted: 07 Jul 2019 09:38 AM PDT Disney released the first trailer for its upcoming live-action version of Mulan during today's Women's World Cup final, showing off a sweeping adventure flick set in China's Han dynasty. Directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and starring Yifei Liu in the lead role, the film will join the ranks of the studio's other animation-to-live-action efforts when it's released next March. Yifei plays Hua Mulan, the daughter of Hua Zhou (played by Tzi Ma), a strict war veteran. When he's recalled to military service to fend off a Hun invasion, Mulan disguises herself as a man to take his place in the Imperial army. The film also stars Donnie Yen (Rogue One) as Commander Tung, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li (who plays Xianniang, a character not... |
A strange interstellar object is coming to Earth in this excerpt from The Last Astronaut Posted: 07 Jul 2019 09:00 AM PDT David Wellington is known for his wide-ranging catalog of stories, such as his Monsters, Vampires, Werewolves, and Plague novels, and branched into space opera a couple of years ago with his The Silence trilogy (Forsaken Skies, Forgotten Worlds, and Forbidden Suns), which he wrote under the name D. Nolan Clark. Later this month, he'll release his latest science fiction thriller, The Last Astronaut. In it, astronaut Sally Jansen has been working to come to grips with a Mars mission that went disastrously wrong, and NASA ended its crewed missions into space. But while she's trying to move on, scientists detect an object designated 2I/2044 D1 entering our solar system, and when it begins to slow down, they realize that it's an alien... |
Finished binging Netflix's Stranger Things? Pick up these 12 books next Posted: 07 Jul 2019 08:01 AM PDT Netflix's Stranger Things has captivated audiences with its sense of nostalgia, drawing from the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King. With the first season out and finished, we've been itching for our next hit of horror fiction that we can obsess over. Books were a major influence for the show's creators, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, who have spoken at length about what has influenced their show. Authors like Stephen King were a formative influence on each brother, who worked to weave the style of horror fiction for which King was known for into their show. This story was originally published on August 4th, 2016. It's been updated to reflect several new tie-in works. Now that the most recent season is over,... |
The original Devil May Cry is still worth playing today Posted: 07 Jul 2019 08:00 AM PDT When you think of the Devil May Cry series, your mind likely jumps directly to over-the-top, stylish action filled with lots of demonic horrors and excellent leather jackets. That very particular vibe has become a franchise hallmark, and nowhere is it more apparent than in the recent Devil May Cry 5, which exudes wonderfully ridiculous action. It's a game where you can wield a motorcycle like a sword and juggle monsters using a pair of pistols. It's hard to not look cool while playing. All of this makes the original Devil May Cry, which debuted on the PS2 back in 2001, particularly interesting to play now. It recently launched on the Nintendo Switch, and I've been slowly making my way through its blood-drenched castle. (The game's brief... |
A portable Bluetooth cassette tape player brings retro audio into 2019 Posted: 07 Jul 2019 07:00 AM PDT Cassette tapes are having a minor comeback: sales were (somehow) up almost 19 percent year over year in 2018, and where there's a market, there's a Kickstarter project looking to cash in. Case in point: the Ninm It's OK. It's sort of what a portable cassette player like an original Walkman would be if Sony continued to develop tape-based tech in 2019. So while the It's OK does the usual tape things, like playing cassettes or letting you record to tapes, it also bills itself as the world's first Bluetooth 5.0 portable cassette player (a claim of such niche specificity that it seems to be true). It allows you to listen to your favorite jams with wireless headphones or even link it to a Bluetooth speaker, should you wish. |
Now you can check in on Bill Nye’s solar sail as it orbits Earth Posted: 07 Jul 2019 06:00 AM PDT A new dashboard will let people track the progress of one of Earth's most unique satellites from anywhere in the world. The Planetary Society just announced a new website that will constantly display the status of the crowdfunded satellite as it orbits the planet. LightSail 2 is the successor to LightSail, a spacecraft that launched in 2015 and whose primary mission was to show that a sail could unfurl in space. The team lost communication with the first LightSail a week after it made it to space, then got communication back, then lost it again, then, finally, got a gorgeous picture of the sail unfurled. LightSail 2 is more ambitious and will actually try to maneuver through space, and even boost itself into different orbits using... |
