Teardown videos prove Nintendo’s revised Switch with new CPU lasts longer on a charge Posted: 16 Aug 2019 03:41 PM PDT Photo by Sam Byford / The Verge Nintendo claims that the only difference between its new, revised Switch and the older model is improved battery life. Not content to take Nintendo's word for it, some popular YouTubers put their brand new, currently hard-to-find units to the test, cracking them open to search for any new undisclosed features or hardware tweaks along the way. The consensus? Nintendo isn't fibbing about that battery life. But unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anything else inside to get too excited about. Depending on the game that's being played, the new Switch is supposed to last between 4.5 and 9 hours compared to the original's range of 2.5 to 6.5 hours of battery life. That's a huge improvement, and one that's especially impressive... |
Nationwide US Customs computer outage causes gigantic lines at airports Posted: 16 Aug 2019 02:38 PM PDT Photo by Gary Hershorn/Getty Images Airports around the United States are experiencing delays in processing international travelers, due to a nationwide outage affecting the computer systems used by Customs and Border Protection. JFK, LAX, SFO, PHL, O'Hare, Midway, Sea-Tac and other airports are confirming delays. "US Customs and Border Protection is experiencing a temporary outage with its processing systems at various air ports of entry and is taking immediate action to address the technology disruption," a CBP official said in a statement to The Verge. "CBP officers continue to process international travelers using alternative procedures until systems are back online. Travelers at some ports of entry are experiencing longer than usual wait times and CBP officers are... |
Apple sues startup for creating a software copy of the iPhone Posted: 16 Aug 2019 02:05 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge For more than a year, a company called Corellium has been offering hackers a virtual iPhone. For a price, you could summon up a virtual iPhone on your computer, changing the model or iOS version through a simple menu tab. Now, Apple is suing to shut that virtual iPhone down. In a lawsuit first reported by Bloomberg, Apple alleges that Corellium's virtual iPhone replica infringes on the company's copyright of iOS and related technology. It would be near impossible to use Corellium's system as a replacement for an iPhone (it's not mobile or SIM-accessible, for a start), but it still copies iOS directly, giving Apple grounds for a claim. "The purpose of this lawsuit is not to encumber good-faith security research, but to bring an end to... |
The looming Obi-Wan TV series is another hint at Disney’s planned streaming tactics Posted: 16 Aug 2019 01:28 PM PDT Ewan McGregor is reportedly in talks to return to his iconic Star Wars role in an Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney's Disney+ streaming service. If the series actually makes it to screens, it'll mark the end of years of effort to get an Obi-Wan movie made, and it will show how Disney intends to use its streaming service. The original plan was to make a feature-length theatrical Star Wars spinoff, according to a Hollywood Reporter story from 2017. Those plans were eventually scrapped following the lackluster success of two Star Wars spinoff films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story. A third spinoff movie was planned, but Disney and Lucasfilm decided to forgo those plans entirely, pushing back future Star Wars... |

If you’ve bought a Nintendo Switch since July 17th, you might be able to upgrade for free Posted: 16 Aug 2019 01:10 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Nintendo made a lightly updated version of the original Switch console that offers improvements like better battery life. But if you bought the old model recently, you might not be out of luck. The company is offering upgrades to the newer model for customers who bought the old version from July 17th going forward (when Nintendo announced the new model), according to a report from Polygon, which confirmed Nintendo is performing the swaps. The upgrade program was first reported by Reddit user u/DarthMewtwo23, and at least one other user has said that they were able to upgrade their older unit. Per Polygon, a Nintendo customer representative has confirmed it's doing the swap, although customers will still have to... |
Huawei may challenge Google Maps’ dominance with its own mapping tech Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:50 PM PDT Illustration by William Joel / The Verge Huawei is developing a "mapping service," according to a report by state-run news outlet China Daily, seemingly designed to challenge Google Maps — but not the way you might expect. The service is apparently intended for software developers, meaning apps that offer navigation or ride-hailing services could use Huawei's planned mapping technology instead of building their own. A Huawei exec told China Daily that the mapping service, called Map Kit, will offer developers a street navigation system they can use in their apps as well as a way to show users real-time traffic conditions. The exec also said that Map Kit will support "augmented-reality mapping." It's unclear what that means. Perhaps it's something similar to Google's recently... |
Segway-Ninebot introduces an e-scooter that can drive itself to a charging station Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:22 PM PDT Photo by Christoph Soeder/picture alliance via Getty Images Segway-Ninebot has a solution for all of those dockless electric scooters that need to be gathered up every night for charging: build one that can drive itself to the charging station. The Chinese scooter giant's new self-driving scooter, the KickScooter T60, was introduced at an event in Beijing on Friday, according to Reuters. The scooter has three wheels (two in front, one in back), and it can supposedly use artificial intelligence and remote cloud capabilities to guide itself without a human rider.
"The pain point for scooter operators is to better... |
Fundo is a new digital meet-and-greet service for creators from Google’s Area 120 incubator Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:05 PM PDT Google's Area 120 incubator has a new project: the fantastically named Fundo, a digital meet-and-greet service for creators, revealed today in a report from Variety. What is Fundo? Well, it's not the name of an adorable, floppy-haired dog, although I can understand why that would be your first impression. No, Fundo is an online meet-and-greet service for creators that lets fans "meet your favorite creator from anywhere, using your phone or computer," per the service's FAQ. The service is described as a sort of virtual photo booth, and it's a pretty good analogy — like a meet-and-greet at a concert or event, fans pay a small fee to be able to wait on line together, and get to briefly talk to the celebrity in question while taking three... |
Democrats plead with Pai to delay T-Mobile-Sprint vote Posted: 16 Aug 2019 11:57 AM PDT Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission announced that it would be charging ahead with a vote to formally approve the T-Mobile-Sprint merger; but Democratic senators are calling on the agency to reopen the issue for public comment before taking that vote. Senator and 2020 presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) penned a letter along with others like Cory Booker (D-NJ), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) asking the FCC to receive feedback from citizens and advocates on the $26 billion telecom merger one last time before approving it, citing concerns that the deal will only entrench telecom monopolies. "We have... |
