Apple TV Plus will reportedly cost $9.99 per month and launch in November Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:05 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Apple's forthcoming streaming video service is scheduled to launch in November and come priced at $9.99 a month, according to a new report this evening from Bloomberg. The company has yet to talk pricing or a release date for the service, despite announcing it back in March of this year. But this window puts Apple's product right up against the launch of Disney+, the entertainment juggernaut's own streaming service that is set to feature a mix of original Disney films, Marvel content, Star Wars content, and original shows and movies across all of its properties and networks. According to Bloomberg, Apple is looking to reach $50 billion in annual services revenue by 2020,... |
Apple reportedly ups TV spending by $5 billion to compete with Amazon and Netflix Posted: 19 Aug 2019 04:38 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple has reportedly committed an eye-popping $5 billion dollars more to its original video content budget in a bid to better compete with Amazon, Disney, HBO, Netflix, and Hulu, according to a new report from the Financial Times. The company had originally set aside $1 billion for former Sony Pictures Television executives Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg to court well-known creators and Hollywood stars to its platform. According to the FT, that number has jumped to $6 billion as more shows have moved through production and budgets have ballooned. One production — a high-profile comedy-drama about morning television featuring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carrell called The Morning Show — has cost Apple hundreds of... |
Former Siri chief is leaving Apple to join Microsoft’s AI division Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:46 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Bill Stasior, the former head of Apple's Siri division, is leaving the company after nearly 1a decade to join Microsoft's artificial intelligence division, reports The Information. Although Stasior left Apple in May, he's only joining Microsoft later this month as a corporate vice president, reporting to Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott. Stassior worked at Apple for more than seven years, joining back in 2012. Stasior's departure seems less an indictment of the current state of Siri and more a reflection of the reality of AI at Apple. Last year, the iPhone maker poached John Giannandrea from Google, where he was a former head of search and AI. That's reshaped the way Apple works on AI. At the time of Giannandrea's hiring, the move... |
Facebook’s antitrust investigation could finish as soon as next year Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:10 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Facebook's looming antitrust fight could come as soon as next year, according to statements by FTC Chairman Joe Simons reported by the Financial Times. Simons told FT that he sees the 2020 elections as a looming deadline for the probe, and would seek to make any finding before November 2020 as a result. "Any significant case that I'm trying to emphasize," Simons said, "I would want to be out before the election." The chairman gave few hints as to what that eventual finding might be, but said the increasing entanglement of Facebook with sister products like Instagram and WhatsApp would make it difficult to execute a traditional antitrust breakup. "If they're maintaining separate business structures and infrastructure, it's much easier... |
Reddit launches five-day live-streaming test Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:54 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Reddit is testing out something that, if successful, could help it take on platforms like Twitch and YouTube — live-streaming. The company today announced its first broadcasting tool, which it's calling the "Reddit Public Access Network." The software will let eligible users live-stream to a new subreddit called r/pan. Users who want to tune into broadcasts can do so directly from the subreddit, but top streams will appear on Reddit's front page throughout the testing period, according to a blog post. Users will also be able to vote on their favorite stream, similar to Reddit's upvote system, which will dictate what appears on the homepage. Not everyone will be able to stream. The company is being "incredibly judicious with the rollout... |
Death Stranding, Gears 5, and Destiny 2: the best trailers of Gamescom 2019 Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:20 PM PDT It's Gamescom, which means a slew of video game news is coming out of Germany this week. Already, we've learned that Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to Google Stadia, PUBG is getting cross-play support on console, and another big wave of indie games is on the way to the Nintendo Switch. Outside of those announcements, big game shows are also good for another thing: trailers. And so far, Gamescom has not disappointed. We got looks at Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, Cyberpunk 2077, Gears 5, and, of course, Hideo Kojima's confounding Death Stranding, which somehow is even weirder than you think. Check out the best from the show so far below.

Moon delivery startup Astrobotic picks future Vulcan rocket to launch first lunar mission Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:15 PM PDT US aerospace startup Astrobotic — a company that wants to establish a delivery service to the Moon — says it will fly its very first lunar mission on top of the United Launch Alliance's future rocket, named Vulcan. In fact, Astrobotic's spacecraft, a lunar lander named Peregrine, will be Vulcan's very first payload ever, scheduled for launch sometime in 2021. If everything stays on track, the mission could send the first private vehicle to the surface of the Moon. Astrobotic is one of many companies with its sights set on the lunar surface. The company, based out of Pittsburgh, says its goal is to build vehicles that can ferry instruments and payloads to the Moon for research organizations, space agencies, companies, and more. "Our goal... |

Tesla launches a rental plan to help its slumping home solar panel business Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:48 PM PDT Image: Tesla Tesla has launched a new rental option for its solar panels in a bid to revive its slumping home solar business. The company is offering the new rental plan in six states — Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Mexico — and it will cost as low as $50 per month (plus tax) with no upfront installation costs or long-term contract. The monthly payment also includes support, maintenance, and any "other necessary hardware," though renters must pas any tax incentives or rebates to Tesla. The new rental option launches just a few months after Tesla cut prices across the board on its solar panels. Taken together, the two decisions show how Tesla is trying to rejuvenate its home solar panel business, which has... |
Nvidia is bringing its GeForce Now cloud gaming service to Android phones Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:46 PM PDT Microsoft's xCloud service, running Halo on a phone. | Photo by Nick Statt / The Verge See the photo above? That's not Nvidia — it's Microsoft's xCloud, streaming Halo to an Android phone from remote internet servers powered by AMD GPUs. Google will also be bringing its Stadia cloud gaming service to Google Pixel phones from AMD-powered servers, and you'll be able to try both this fall. That's probably why AMD rival Nvidia isn't sitting still. The graphics giant just announced it will "soon extend" its existing GeForce Now cloud gaming service to Android phones, including flagship devices from LG and Samsung. Unfortunately, we don't have details like "when exactly?" and "how much?" except that you won't have to pay to try Nvidia's service at first. Like the current GeForce Now for Mac, PC, and Nvidia's Shield TV set-top... |
