If you attack a robot, it might photograph you in the act Posted: 22 Aug 2019 05:56 PM PDT Image: Knightscope Humans haven't quite reached a WALL-E-like society where robots care for our every possible need, but we do have a few roving security robots that can monitor places like banks, casinos, malls, and hospitals so human security guards can catch a break. Some people don't seem to like the new robot cops: earlier this month in Hayward, California, a security robot captured video of an alleged attacker shortly before he bowled it over. Here's a video from Knightscope, which makes the robot that was attacked: Knocking over one of these robots isn't something you'd likely do by accident — Knightscope says it weighs 398 lbs. But most people... |
Epic finally backpedals on Fortnite’s B.R.U.T.E. mech suit with dramatic nerfs Posted: 22 Aug 2019 05:03 PM PDT Image: Epic Games Epic Games has heard the feedback loud and clear, and this afternoon the Fortnite developer announced a series of sweeping changes to its newly introduced B.R.U.T.E. mech suit that has had game's community in open revolt for the last few weeks. The changes have mostly gone into effect immediately, with Epic saying players will not need to update the game at all. In a post titled "B.R.U.T.E. balance adjustments," Epic details the substantial nerfs coming to the item, including a reduction in the number of rockets it can fire, the rate it fires those rockets, and number of other powerful advantages the suit offered players. The mech suit first arrived in early August with the launch of Fortnite's tenth season. Unfortunately, it's caused... |
Google Photos now lets you search for text in pictures you’ve taken Posted: 22 Aug 2019 04:33 PM PDT Photo by Michele Doying / The Verge Google made a subtle announcement today on Twitter: it's in the process of rolling out new AI features for its Lens platform that will let you search your Google Photos library for text that appears within photos and screenshots. Then, you'll then be able to easily copy and paste that text into a note, document, or form. Both of the new features make use of a technique known as optical character recognition (OCR), with the copy/paste option building on Lens' existing ability to understand and pull out the text found within photos, be it a screenshot or a photo of a physical sign or document. According to 9to5Google, that feature is available now on some Android devices, although it does not appear to be active quite yet on iOS. You may... |
Netflix’s Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance builds on everything that made the film great Posted: 22 Aug 2019 04:01 PM PDT In 1982, Jim Henson and Frank Oz redefined fantasy filmmaking with The Dark Crystal, an ambitious, puppet-driven movie that tells a wondrous story about an ancient world on the brink of destruction or salvation. In the post-Game of Thrones fantasy licensing frenzy, it would have been easy for Netflix to snap up the rights to the Dark Crystal world, make a cheap knockoff, and count on nostalgia to lure viewers. Instead, Clash of the Titans and The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier has produced a true labor of love. The series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance builds on everything that made the film great, and it has the potential to become a classic in its own right. The Dark Crystal, set on the dying world of Thra, followed two... |
The new Chevy Bolt gained 21 miles of range thanks to a battery chemistry tweak Posted: 22 Aug 2019 02:50 PM PDT Photo: Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The 2020 Chevrolet Bolt is going to offer 21 miles more range on a full charge than its predecessors, thanks to a tweak in battery chemistry, the automaker announced Thursday. The new version of the automaker's flagship electric vehicle will therefore get an EPA-estimated 259 miles of range when it goes on sale later this year, up from 238 miles. "To achieve this notable range increase, Chevrolet's battery engineering team improved the energy of the cell electrodes by making small but impactful changes to the cell chemistry," Chevrolet said in a statement. "This innovative thinking allowed the team to implement the range increase without needing to change the physical battery pack and the way it is integrated into the vehicle structure." ... |
Bernie Sanders’ Green New Deal is the most progressive in the race Posted: 22 Aug 2019 02:39 PM PDT Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images Bernie Sanders just dropped his version of what a Green New Deal would look like if he becomes president — and it looks incredibly ambitious. The proposed set of federal policies aims to simultaneously avert a climate crisis while building up a green economy that protects workers and vulnerable communities. At $16.3 trillion spent over 15 years, Sanders' climate deal is by far the priciest of all the Democratic candidates left in the primary race. It's also arguably the most progressive — pushing for the US to have a carbon-free economy by 2050. The senator from Vermont also set a 2030 benchmark goal of reaching 100 percent renewable energy in the country's two most carbon-intensive industries, transportation and the power sector, by... |
Posted: 22 Aug 2019 02:20 PM PDT Image: HP HP Inc. has announced that CEO Dion Weisler will be stepping down "due to a family health matter" and will be succeeded by Enrique Lores, who is currently president of HP's printer division. Lores will officially begin as CEO on November 1st, according to the press release. HP says Weisler will be a director on the company's board until the next annual stockholder meeting, which should be in April 2020. Weisler has been CEO since 2015, when HP split into two parts: a PC and printer business known as HP Inc., led by Weisler, and an enterprise services business called HPE, led by former HP CEO Meg Whitman until she stepped down in 2015. She has since co-founded short video platform Quibi. Lores has been at HP for 30 years and started at... |
YouTube disabled 210 accounts for spreading disinformation about Hong Kong protests Posted: 22 Aug 2019 02:03 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Google just published a blog post revealing that it has disabled 210 YouTube channels that the company says "behaved in a coordinated manner while uploading videos related to the ongoing protests in Hong Kong." Google cites the behavior as being "consistent with recent observations and actions related to China announced by Facebook and Twitter." The accounts were disabled earlier this week. Both Facebook and Twitter recently uncovered and suspended accounts that the social media companies believe were operated by the Chinese government and designed to seed doubt about and undermine the ongoing protests in Hong Kong. Twitter suspended nearly 1,000 accounts tied to China, and Facebook removed various pages, groups, and accounts linked to... |
DoorDash breaks silence on driver tips, says it’ll start paying them next month Posted: 22 Aug 2019 02:00 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge DoorDash today announced more concrete details about its updated tipping policy, which the company says it's been testing this month and plans to roll out to all of its delivery contractors starting next month. Under a newly revamped pay model, all drivers will receive 100 percent of the tip amount a customer adds through the DoorDash app either at checkout or after delivery. Drivers will be informed of this total and the breakdown before they decide to accept an order. DoorDash is also pledging to increase base pay earnings across the board for all drivers. The company initially promised to review its approach to tipping late last month in response to immense pressure both from the public and DoorDash drivers over its policy of p... |
News Corp is making a news service called... Knewz Posted: 22 Aug 2019 12:54 PM PDT Photo by Gary Hershorn/Getty Images News Corp is developing a news distribution service designed to offer an alternative to Google and Facebook, according to The Wall Street Journal. It's currently being called Knewz, and it's meant to give the Rupert Murdoch-owned publishing empire leverage over the two tech giants, both of which have become integral to the distribution of news — often to publishers' consternation. Knewz is also being developed due to concerns from News Corp executives that Google and Facebook are biased against conservative publications, according to the Journal. While there remains no clear evidence of that bias — Fox News and the Daily Mail were among the top three web publishers on Facebook last month, and a yearlong study by The Economist only found... |
