Steve Wozniak says Apple should have broken up years ago Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:15 PM PDT Photo by Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images for Discovery Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is wildly outspoken, and he's never been shy to criticize the company he helped build. This week, he told Bloomberg that Apple should have been broken up a long time ago. He's not necessarily talking about government regulators stepping in the way Elizabeth Warren wants, though. Rather, he seems to be talking about building an environment where engineers like himself are free to work on their own. Here's the full quote: "I wish Apple on its own has split off a long time ago and spun off independent divisions to far away places and let them work independently, like Hewlett Packard did when I was there." You might note that HP was the company... |
Some airlines are banning Apple’s MacBook Pros even if they weren’t recalled Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:40 PM PDT In June, Apple recalled the 2015 MacBook Pro with Retina Display, sold between September 2015 and February 2017, because the battery "may pose a fire safety risk," and the FAA soon reminded airlines not to carry those laptops with defective batteries on board. But some airlines are now banning Apple laptops whether they've got a bad battery or not, as reported by Bloomberg. Virgin Australia isn't taking any chances: it's banning every single MacBook from being carried in checked baggage. In a notice on its "Dangerous Goods" page, the company doesn't differentiate by shape, screen size, or the year it was made: all "Apple MacBooks" can only be brought onto planes in carry-on baggage. That may sound extreme, as the large majority of Apple... |
Facebook ‘has to do a lot better than this,’ say Senators Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:31 PM PDT Illustration by James Bareham / The Verge A letter sent from Facebook to Democratic lawmakers has shed new light on the Messenger Kids breach that took place this summer — and inspired new backlash from Congress. Earlier this year, an implementation error in the Messenger Kids app had allowed children to create group chats with unauthorized users. That violated a core promise of the app, which had pledged to give children a way to talk with friends without potentially exposing them to strangers online. In the wake of the news, Senators Ed Markey (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) wrote to Facebook seeking more information on the flaw, specifically raising the question of whether the company had violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (or COPPA). But Facebook's... |
Greta Thunberg wraps up 15-day carbon-free voyage to New York City Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:12 PM PDT Thunburg waves to supporters in New York | KENA BETANCUR/AFP/Getty Images Teen climate sensation Greta Thunberg has made it to New York City after her 15-day voyage by yacht from Plymouth, England. After disembarking to a cheering crowd in lower Manhattan, Thunberg opened a press conference saying, "Well all of this is overwhelming." "The trip was surprisingly good. I did not feel sea sick once," Thunberg said. Thunberg made the trip across the Atlantic to attend a United Nations climate summit taking place in September — and she did it without leaving a carbon footprint. She traveled aboard the Malizia II, which has its own solar panels and hydro-generators to power the yacht. (Her journey did spark some criticism for the emissions associated with it because others will fly to New York to bring the yacht... |
Xbox Live is back after a huge outage that took some apps and games offline Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:04 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Microsoft's Xbox Live service is experiencing issues today, preventing a large number of users from signing into Xbox consoles. The issues appear to have started around 3PM ET today, with many Xbox users reporting that they were unable to sign in to Xbox One consoles and access some apps and games. Apps like Spotify, Plex, or Amazon Video require you to be signed into an Xbox One console, and The Verge has been unable to access these apps during this Xbox Live outage. Netflix continues to work, but games like Fortnite and Destiny 2 won't work correctly without being signed into Xbox Live. The outage seems to only lasted a couple hours. Around 5PM ET, Microsoft's Xbox support account tweeted that "Things are looking better with signing... |
NASA asks students to help name the next Mars rover Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:01 PM PDT The next NASA Rover is on schedule to land on Mars in February 2021, but it's still missing one vital component: a name. In order to create interest in the mission, and to inspire students to join in the STEM subjects that make space exploration possible, NASA is sponsoring a contest called Name the Rover. Open to K-12 students in US public, private, and home schools, it is an essay contest in which students will be asked to name the robotic space traveler and explain the reasons behind their chosen appellation. If you, a student in your household, or in your class (if you're a teacher) would like to give it a try, it's very simple. Just go to the Name the Rover Challenge page, and click on the "Student and Teacher Signup" button.... |
Huawei Mate 30 can’t launch with official Google apps, says Google Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:51 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Huawei may face a major roadblock for its next flagship phone, the Mate 30 — it won't be able to launch with Google apps and services due to the White House banning US companies (like Google) from doing business with the Chinese telecommunications firm, according to a report from Reuters. That means that the Mate 30 — and presumably, other upcoming devices like the now-delayed foldable Mate X — could be severely limited at launch. They'll still run Android, which is at its core open-source software that's freely available. But Google has confirmed to The Verge that the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro (rumored to launch on September 18th) won't be able to ship with Google's apps and services on board, which could put them at a severe... |
Amazon’s Ring offered a footage request system to more than 400 law enforcement agencies Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:51 PM PDT Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge Amazon's Ring security service has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies across the United States, the company disclosed today in a blog post. In the post, Ring said that it had created an extension of its Neighbors app, called the Neighbors Portal, which police can use to submit a request through Ring to users for video recordings related to investigations, or to make public announcements as "a verified law enforcement officer." "We share updates when new law enforcement agencies join Neighbors through the app, social media and local press, but our users have asked for an additional way to search this information," the blog post reads. The company also released an interactive map that... |
AMD to pay out $12.1 million in false advertising class action suit over Bulldozer chips Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:09 PM PDT AMD has agreed to a $12.1 million settlement in a class action lawsuit for some customers who bought its FX-8000 / 9000 CPUs built on its 2011 Bulldozer architecture, ending a years-long dispute that claimed AMD falsely advertised the chips as eight-core processors when they in fact only possessed half that number, via The Register. According to the lawsuit, the Bulldozer-based chips weren't truly multicore processors to the extent that AMD claimed. AMD advertised the CPUs as eight-core chips, but each chip only had four "dual-core modules" with separate execution units; other resources like cache and a single floating point unit (FPU) were shared across the module. AMD says that those modules counted as two cores each, for a total of... |
Spotify tests an in-app ‘create podcast’ button Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:54 PM PDT Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Spotify wants as many podcasts on its platform as possible, and it's now testing a new button within its app that'll encourage people to create one. Code leaker Jane Wong spotted a new button in Spotify's podcasts library that says "Create podcast," and if tapped, will either send people over to the Anchor app, if it's already installed, or send them to an informational webpage about the app. Spotify acquired Anchor, a podcast creation technology company, earlier this year. Anchor is designed to make it easy for anyone to create a podcast by recording right off their phone. Spotify's ownership of Anchor hasn't been super obvious in either app, but it looks like that could be changing.
