Lime, Jump, Bird pledge to remove their Miami scooters to avoid flying menaces Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:52 PM PDT Illustration by William Joel / The Verge Hurricane Dorian's expected landfall on Florida has Miami, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa scrambling to remove bikes and scooters from their streets. If the devices aren't removed from the streets, they could potentially be picked up by hurricane winds — transforming into threats to people and property. Miami has demanded that all of these mobility companies remove their products from the streets by noon on Friday, Bloomberg reported. Tampa has not yet issued a request for removal, but if (or when) it does, the companies will have 12 hours to comply with it. ("All of our vendors appear prepared for that requirement, and are staying tuned to the weather notices," says a spokesperson for the city of Tampa.) Lime, Uber's scooter... |
Tesla launched a car insurance product, then spent the next 24 hours fixing it Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:06 PM PDT Photo by Sean O'Kane / The Verge Just a few hours after Tesla launched its in-house car insurance product in California on August 28th, the company stopped offering rate quotes and suspended access to the insurance website. It now appears to be live again as of 8PM ET on August 29th. But even during the time Tesla's insurance site was working and offering owners quotes, some people weren't happy with the results. Tesla tells The Verge those two things are actually related; the company says it found "bugs" that were affecting some customers' rate quotes, but it declined to offer any specifics beyond that. The company said it will get the website... |
Microsoft unveils new tablet experience for Windows 10 Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:22 PM PDT Microsoft is planning to redesign the tablet experience for Windows 10. The software giant has started testing a new design for 2-in-1 convertible PCs that will keep the user interface more similar to the existing desktop design. Currently, Windows 10 throws you into a more tablet-optimized UI that removes task bar icons and puts the Start menu full-screen when a device automatically switches into "tablet mode." Microsoft is now walking back some of those changes, while keeping some touch-optimized elements for 2-in-1 PCs. In the new tablet experience, the desktop will remain in full view, with the task bar icons visible and increased spacing between them. If enabled, the search box will collapse into an icon, and the touch keyboard will... |
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:15 PM PDT Image: Google Google Pay is a digital wallet and online payment system that's developed by Google to make it easy for you to make purchases. It automatically syncs your saved credit cards wherever your Google account is logged in for quick payments, and it will import loyalty cards, tickets, and offers from your Gmail account. Google Pay is supported at most major markets, gas stations, and department stores. Setting up Google Pay is straightforward. What do I need to set up Google Pay?You need a debit / credit card or PayPal account, a Google account, and a supported Google Pay device (a non-rooted Android phone using KitKat 4.4 and up, a Wear OS watch, or a desktop / laptop computer). You can even use it with an iOS device (although you can only... |
The Trump administration stands up US Space Command as fate of Space Force is still undecided Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:04 PM PDT The new flag for US Space Command is unveiled during a ceremony with President Trump | Credit: SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images Today, the Trump administration stood up a new unified combatant command within the military that will be entirely focused on space. Aptly named the US Space Command, the organization will be run by a four-star general, and it will be responsible for setting the US's military agenda and doctrine for space in the years to come. "As the newest combatant command SPACECOM will defend America's vital interests in space — the next warfighting domain," President Donald Trump said today at a ceremony standing up Space Command. "And I think that's pretty obvious to everybody. It's all about space." Following Trump's speech about the merits of Space Command, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper signed documents that formally established the... |
Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:59 PM PDT Google's chief legal officer David Drummond had an affair with former Google lawyer Jennifer Blakely that resulted in a baby born in 2007, Blakely writes in a post on Medium. The relationship violated Google's policies which ban relationships between managers and their subordinates. After that, Blakely says Drummond abandoned the relationship, put her through a legal wringer for child support, and engaged in treatment that Blakely describes as "nothing short of abuse." In a statement to BuzzFeed News today, Drummond doesn't deny most of Blakely's claims. Except for one specific accusation, he simply says that "I take a very different view about what happened" and that he "won't be getting into a public back and forth about these personal... |
Disney is leading the charge against Netflix by returning to weekly episode releases Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:47 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge When Netflix started Beyoncéing its TV shows (releasing entire seasons at once, often with little or no warning), the streaming service reinvented how people consume TV. As Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos explained it in 2016, TV viewers were already moving away from an "appointment TV" model and toward saving up DVR'd episodes for binge viewing, so the service tried to keep up with the ways its customers wanted to consume content. In subsequent years, streaming subscribers became accustomed to binging shows. But powerhouses like Disney, Apple, and Hulu are looking to change the game again by taking the opposite strategy with their streaming services. If Netflix turned patience into a forgotten virtue, its competitors are... |
Possible Juul link to seizures kicks off FDA investigation Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:45 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge An ongoing Food and Drug Administration investigation into a possible link between seizures and e-cigarette use was kicked off by three cases allegedly involving Juul use, Bloomberg reported today. Bloomberg obtained communications between FDA officials in mid-October 2018, which detailed the three cases. The FDA found "no proof of causality, but at a minimum, an association with Juul," Mitch Zeller, the director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, wrote to Scott Gottlieb, the FDA commissioner at the time. In an interview, Zeller said that the FDA had not been able to confirm that Juul use was associated with the seizures in two of the three initially reported... |

This Korean AirPods ad makes me jealous of international case options Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:21 PM PDT Apple is running a new AirPods advertisement in Korea that shows off a fun side of the popular wireless headphones that the company hasn't really focused on before: the potential to customize your AirPods by adding a fun, colorful case. There's a wide variety of cases on display that are modeled after BTS's BT21 Line characters, Kakao Friends mascots, and more. It's not clear whether Apple is using the ad to showcase a bunch of cases that third parties in Asia offer or if this is a prelude to it selling (or even designing its own) AirPods cases in its own stores, but its definitely a fun look. AirPods cases aren't new — there are loads of options out there, including the obvious best case, which turns them into a fidget spinner — but... |
