Asus’ notchless ZenFone 6 with a flip-top camera is now available in the US

Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:36 PM PDT

The Asus ZenFone 6 is now available for purchase in the US starting at $499.99. Asus differentiates the ZenFone 6 with a camera that flips up from the back of the device to also act as a front-facing camera. It's a smart idea that maximizes use of the 48-megapixel main camera and 13-megapixel wide-angle lens, all while allowing the 6.4-inch display to run edge to edge without interruption. The camera can rotate on its own for panoramas, and it can follow a subject in motion-tracking mode.

The Verge's Chaim Gartenberg found the camera to be pretty good during his initial preview of the device, but we'll need to do further testing to see how it compares to others. Asus says the camera housing is made of durable liquid metal protected by a...

The Matrix is returning to theaters to celebrate its 20th anniversary

The Matrix is headed back to theaters for one week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sci-fi classic. Specifically, it'll be screened in the 135 Dolby Cinema AMC theaters around the country, from August 30th to September 5th.

Technically, AMC is a few months late here — the film, which was written and directed by sibling duo Lana and Lilly Wachowski, was released on March 31st, 1999 — but given that the film came out so long ago, there are likely plenty of fans who never had the chance to see it properly in theaters.

Or, more cynically, given Keanu Reeves' recent current run of pop-culture hype (specifically, the popularity of John Wick 3 and his viral "breathtaking" E3 appearance), it's possible both Warner Bros. and AMC want to...

YouTube CEO addresses LGBTQ community’s ongoing demonetization concerns

Members of YouTube's LGBTQ community have raised concerns about their videos being demonetized seemingly because they fall under queer categories, but CEO Susan Wojcicki says that's not the case.

Demonetization and poor recommendation of LGBTQ content are two areas that Wojcicki spoke about at length with popular vlogger Alfie Deyes in a recent interview. Wojcicki said that YouTube does "not automatically demonetize LGBTQ content" and that YouTube's monetization system, which determines whether a video is appropriate for ads, and its recommendation systems, which promote videos across the platform, operate independently. It's set up that way to ensure that the "systems are fair," she said.

"There's no policies that say 'If you put...

Nintendo Switch Lite FCC filings confirm a smaller battery, new processor, and Odin fixation

The new Switch Lite and the slightly improved Nintendo Switch have each appeared in photos at the FCC. And, as you'd hope, they've both been thoroughly dissected, so we can get a closer look at what Nintendo seems to have changed from the original model (and what it hasn't).

Nintendo claims that battery life is improved in the Switch Lite relative to the original Switch. And hours of additional battery life is also the only really tangible difference between the slightly updated Switch and the original. But Nintendo isn't accomplishing that in either device by using a bigger battery. Instead, it's using a more efficient processor.

According to the photo seen below, compiled with filings from the FCC, the Switch Lite uses a 13.6...

Tinder’s former marketing chief sues Match over sexual assault and wrongful termination

Tinder's former marketing chief is suing the app's parent companies and former CEO over claims that the company wrongfully terminated her employment after she went public with sexual assault allegations. Rosette Pambakian claims in her lawsuit that former Tinder CEO Greg Blatt sexually assaulted her after a Tinder holiday party in 2016 in an employee's hotel room, the cost of which the company covered.

Much of Pambakian's story has already been detailed in a CNN interview from last August. She went public with the allegations at the same time a separate lawsuit was filed claiming that Tinder and its parent company, Match Group, purposely undervalued Tinder in an effort to avoid paying billions of dollars in equity to the startup team,...

Amazon price alerts are leading sellers to raise prices on Walmart or risk losing perks

Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:11 PM PDT

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Amazon is indirectly causing third-party sellers to raise prices on their products if those products are listed on competing storefronts at lower prices, according to a report from Bloomberg. This is potentially anti-competitive, and it may become a central piece of evidence in the federal government's ongoing antitrust investigations into US tech companies.

Amazon is not going so far as to openly demand its third-party sellers raise prices, according to Bloomberg. In some cases, Amazon may want the seller to lower the prices of its items on Amazon.com to match the prices on Walmart and elsewhere. Walmart also encourages its sellers to match prices across platforms. But Walmart isn't as influential as Amazon's Marketplace, which is the...

Google is showing shopping results for 100-bullet magazines, despite policy against gun ads

Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:30 PM PDT

Google is displaying shoppable results and sponsored ads for high-capacity drum magazines, even though it is against the company's policy to advertise gun parts that enhance the functionality of a weapon. A Google search for ".223 100rd" (short for round), the same type of magazine used by the Dayton massacre shooter, displays sponsored results on the right side of the page, with more links leading to buyable products on the Shopping tab.

As noted by Pinboard developer Maciej Cegłowski's tweets, Google's algorithms also fail to block search results for other gun accessories. A search for "AR 15 mod" does not turn up any results, presumably because it has been delisted by a manual filter. But spelling out "fifteen" bring up pages of...

SpaceX will now offer rocket ride-shares tailored solely to small satellites

Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:19 PM PDT

SpaceX is getting into the rocket ride-share business, giving companies the opportunity to launch bundles of small satellites into orbit on the company's Falcon 9 rocket. Up until now, SpaceX has mostly focused on launching heavier, bus-sized satellites to space or bulky cargo capsules to the International Space Station. The new program, called the SmallSat Rideshare Program, will offer operators of tiny satellites more flexibility when launching to space.

Typically, small satellites — weighing in at a few hundred pounds — have to hitch rides on big rockets that are already slated to launch much larger cargo to orbit. The satellites can tag along if there's any leftover room on the rocket and get dropped off in space along the way....

Trump and Republicans continue to blame video games for their failures on gun control

Following two mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, this past weekend, a familiar cycle is playing out: lawmakers and government officials offer thoughts and prayers, yet take no action to prevent future tragedies. Manifestos are dissected and distributed online. Fingers are pointed everywhere besides gun control — and, once again, the blame has landed on video games.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told Fox & Friends that video games "dehumanize individuals." In a speech today, President Trump pointed at video games specifically as a root cause for mass shootings. "We must stop the glorification of violence in our society," he said. "This includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace. It is too...

The electric vehicle Cannonball Run record was broken twice in one month

Posted: 05 Aug 2019 10:46 AM PDT

Kyle Connor with his Tesla Model 3 | Kyle Connor

In mid-July, a family from Switzerland broke the US record for fastest cross-country trip in an electric vehicle, completing the New York-to-California journey in a long-range Tesla Model 3 in just 48 hours and 10 minutes. Little did they know, they'd only get to hold that record for three weeks.

The concept of using electric vehicles for coast-to-coast "Cannonball Run" speed trials is fairly new, and only started gaining popularity when the EV charging infrastructure started to mature. But in the last few years, more EV owners have made attempts at setting a new record. Some do it to promote a business or a cause, others for the sheer thrill of racing across the country, knowing that every second counts. The added challenge of driving...
