Ninja hits 1 million subscribers on Mixer five days after leaving Twitch Posted: 06 Aug 2019 05:30 PM PDT After just five days of streaming, Tyler "Ninja" Blevins is boasting 1 million active subscribers on Mixer, the Microsoft-owned platform that made him jump ship from Twitch. "Thank you for all the incredible support," Blevins tweeted when announcing the milestone. "I haven't felt this good in a long time." Whether Blevins' fans would follow him from Twitch to Mixer, a much smaller platform compared to Amazon's streaming behemoth, has been a question on the minds of everyone in the streaming community this past week. One million subscribers over five days is an impressive feat regardless of platform, and it's a strong testament to Blevins' popularity and the strength of his personal brand regardless of platform. Yet it's unclear how many... |
Facebook sues two app developers for click injection fraud Posted: 06 Aug 2019 05:18 PM PDT Illustration by James Bareham / The Verge Facebook has sued two app developers for click injection fraud, claiming the developers made Google Play apps that installed malware on a user's phone for the purpose of generating fake clicks on Facebook ads. That fraudulent ad revenue in turn went to the app developers, Hong Kong-based LionMobi and Singapore-based JediMobi. Facebook also said LionMobi advertised its malicious apps on Facebook, which is in violation of its policies. The company says its lawsuit is "one of the first of its kind against this practice," but Google has increasingly taken action against Play Store apps using click injection schemes as well. In October, Google removed more than 30 apps using ad fraud schemes that were reported to the company as part of a B... |
Small satellite launcher Rocket Lab unveils plans to recover its rockets midair with helicopters Posted: 06 Aug 2019 04:13 PM PDT An animation of how Rocket Lab's recovery process will work | Image: Rocket Lab Small satellite launcher Rocket Lab is following in the footsteps of rocket behemoth SpaceX with plans to make its rockets reusable. But Rocket Lab won't be landing its vehicles in the same fashion as SpaceX's Falcon 9. Instead, the company plans to catch its rockets in mid-air with a helicopter after they've fallen back to Earth. Rocket Lab announced these plans today at the Small Satellite Conference in Utah. The company says the goal is to increase the frequency of launches of its primary rocket, called the Electron. By saving the vehicles when they return to Earth, Rocket Lab hopes to turn them around and re-launch them again as soon as possible. And that shouldn't be too difficult since some of the vehicle's machinery runs on... |
Apple plans to restrict how messaging apps access background iOS data Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:29 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple plans to restrict how apps implement internet voice call functionality, which currently could allow mobile software to collect data while running in the background, according to a new report from The Information. Going forward, Apple will require that background access be used for VoIP calls and nothing else. The change may have a big impact on messaging apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. Both use the specific Apple developer tool in question as a kind of workaround to iOS restrictions, so that an app can run features in the background while it's not being actively used. For example, WhatsApp, per The Information, uses the current VoIP call tech for implementing end-to-end encryption. The Information reports that Snapchat... |
Twitch is now the official international streaming partner for USA Basketball Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:02 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitch has partnered with the National Basketball Association to stream USA Basketball games globally through 2020, according to Reuters. USA Basketball is a nonprofit organization that's the governing body for basketball in America; it's the outfit that organizes the men's and women's teams that compete internationally. (This year, it will send teams to the FIBA World Cup in China — which happens every four years and is basically the same as the soccer version.) The move brings even more live sports to Twitch, which currently plays host to the NFL's Thursday Night Football among other content, like NBA minor league games. (In the past year, Twitch has signed deals that include co-streaming rights with the WWE, UEFA Champions League... |
Congress asks 8chan’s owner to testify following recent mass shootings Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:35 PM PDT Photo by Gabriella Demczuk/Getty Images Congressional leaders are requesting that the owner of 8chan, Jim Watkins, testify before the House Homeland Security Committee to inform the body on what the fringe forum is doing to combat the proliferation of extremist content. "Regrettably, this is at least the third act of white supremacist extremist violence linked to your website this year," Reps. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Mike Rogers (R-AL) wrote. "Americans deserve to know what, if anything, you, as the owner and operator, are doing to address the proliferation of extremist content on 8chan." Over the past four months, three suspected white supremacist terror attacks occurred after the shooters posted racist screeds describing their motives onto... |
EV startup NIO sold its Formula E racing team Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:29 PM PDT Photo by Sean O'Kane / The Verge Chinese EV startup NIO has sold the majority stake in its Formula E all-electric racing series team, according to longtime motorsports journalist Sam Smith. The company will remain a sponsor, a person familiar with the sale tells The Verge, but Chinese motorsports promotion company Lisheng Racing bought the stake and will run the team's operations from here on out. NIO has been looking to sell its entry since at least April, according to two people familiar with the sale, who were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about it. The young automaker is the second EV startup to scale back operations in the five-year-old motorsport, which now features powerhouse manufacturers like Audi, BMW, and soon, Mercedes-Benz and... |
Disney announces $12.99 bundle for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:01 PM PDT Disney will offer a bundle package of its three streaming services — Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ — for $12.99 a month starting on November 12th, the company announced today. The company previously hinted at a bundle for all three services, but CEO Bob Iger made it official during the company's investors call today. At $12.99, the bundle is cheaper than or on par with competitive streaming services, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It's also significantly cheaper than HBO Max's rumored streaming price of $16-$17 a month. Hulu is currently available for $5.99 a month (with ads), and ESPN+ costs $4.99 a month. ESPN+ is the Disney-owned sports streaming platform, which carries "hundreds of MLB, NHL and MLS games, Grand Slam tennis,... |
Disney has made $8 billion at the box office this year, but its ambitions are costing it a fortune Posted: 06 Aug 2019 01:42 PM PDT Disney is having a record run at the box office this year, surpassing $8 billion in global ticket sales thanks to an astounding run of blockbuster releases across its Marvel and core Disney brands. That said, the company is gearing up to expand that success well beyond the theater, and with that comes big spending. In its fiscal third quarter earning results for 2019, the company posted revenue of $20.25 billion, coming in under Wall Street estimates of $21 billion. "I'd like to congratulate The Walt Disney Studios for reaching $8 billion at the global box office so far this year — a new industry record — thanks to the stellar performance of our Marvel, Pixar and Disney films," CEO Bob Iger said in the company's earnings report release... |
Rocket League is ditching loot boxes Posted: 06 Aug 2019 01:31 PM PDT Rocket League will remove its paid, randomized loot crates in favor of a system that will tell players what they're purchasing before they buy. Developer Psyonix announced the news today and described it as a similar change to that made in Epic's Fortnite. "We are dedicated to creating the best possible experience for our players all over the world," the developer said. Information on when the change will take place is still to come. Players will still be able to buy Rocket Pass Premium, DLC Cars, and e-sports shop items directly when the new system kicks into effect. Epic acquired Psyonix in May; it dropped blind-draw loot boxes for Fortnite in January of this year. The company has since been sued by the parent of an underage... |
