VAIO’s tiny, port-heavy laptop is out now in the US

Posted: 07 Aug 2019 08:04 PM PDT

VAIO's SX12, the tiny laptop with almost every port imaginable, is now available to order in the US. Pricing starts at $1,119 for a model with a U-series Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, going all the way up to $2,119 for a limited-color variant with an i7, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD.

What all of these models also get you, of course, is a 12-inch 1080p screen, three USB-A ports, one USB-C port, one HDMI port, a full-size SD card slot, a headphone/mic port, an Ethernet port, and an honest-to-goodness VGA port. Hopefully we're able to test the SX12 for ourselves at some point soon, but in the meantime here's our review of the similar and slightly bigger SX14.

Samsung didn’t mention Bixby once during its entire Galaxy Note 10 event

Not once during Samsung's Unpacked event for the new Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus did anyone on stage say the word "Bixby." Samsung's virtual assistant — positioned as an alternative to Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri — was never directly brought up over the course of the Note's introduction and several other product sequences featuring the Galaxy Watch Active 2, Galaxy Tab S6, and other devices. Bixby wasn't included in any demonstrations of the Note 10's many new software tricks, productivity enhancements, and features designed with convenience in mind.

It was a remarkable exclusion from Samsung after years of trying to establish Bixby as central to Samsung's in-house software efforts and AI advancements. The absence was...

Game of Thrones creators sign $200 million Netflix deal to make exclusive shows and films

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss have signed a multi-year film and TV deal with Netflix worth about $200 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As part of the deal, Benioff and Weiss will no longer be producing shows for HBO, where they were showrunners and writers on Game of Thrones for its entirety, and will work on projects exclusively for Netflix, with the exception of the two's existing commitment to an ongoing multi-film deal with Disney for the Star Wars franchise.

"We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can't wait to see what their imaginations will bring to...

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 won’t work with its Gear VR headset

Posted: 07 Aug 2019 04:36 PM PDT

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge

Samsung's just-announced Galaxy Note 10 is not compatible with Gear VR, the company's virtual reality headset that works only with a phone slotted in front of the lenses, according to a tweet from tech analyst Anshel Sag. The decision to shut off support for its headset on its newest flagship phones casts doubt on the future of both the Gear VR and phone-based headsets, as standalone devices with built-in displays like the Oculus Go are on the rise.

Samsung didn't mention Gear VR during today's Unpacked event, and it hasn't updated the headset since 2017. The most recent phones to support it were all four of the Galaxy S10 phone models announced in February, but only via an adapter. (The same was true of last year's Galaxy Note 9.) The...

The bigger, the better: Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 Plus vs. the iPhone XS Max, OnePlus 7 Pro, and more

The term "phablet" was originally coined to describe a phone that's about as large as a typical tablet. The word has (thankfully) mostly gone out of popular use, but considering the number of super-sized phones that have been hitting the market, there's a chance it could be resurrected. The latest to be introduced is Samsung's impressively sized and equipped Galaxy Note 10 Plus.

The Note 10 Plus, with its 6.8-inch display, may boast the largest screen currently available in the US market. (It is outmatched by at least one non-US phone, the Huawei Honor Note 10, with a 6.95-inch display.) However, the size of the display doesn't necessarily reflect the overall size of the phone. Although the Note 10 Plus measures 6.39 x 3.04 x 0.31...

Hands on with the Galaxy Book S, Samsung’s laptop and smartphone hybrid

Posted: 07 Aug 2019 03:22 PM PDT

Samsung just announced the Galaxy Book S, a device that looks to promise the best of both worlds by marrying the the battery life and LTE data of a smartphone with the power and feature set of a full Windows 10 laptop.

We were able to try out the Galaxy Book S for a few minutes after the reveal, but unfortunately, the two biggest features here — the new Qualcomm 8cx processor, and the 23-hour battery life Samsung is promising that will provide — are hard to gauge in a brief hands-on.

Here's what I can say, though: the Galaxy Book S wasn't noticeably laggy or slow when I was using it, and it apps like Edge and Paint 3D ran as expected. But that's hardly conclusive one way or the...

A 5G version of the smaller Samsung Galaxy Note 10 exists, but isn’t coming to the US

Posted: 07 Aug 2019 03:21 PM PDT

See the photo above? Given the US pricing, it would be natural to assume that Samsung is releasing a 5G version of the smaller 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 10 to the US — however, you'd be wrong. Samsung isn't bringing this version of the phone to the US or other regions, for that matter. The 5G version of the Note 10, which was briefly mentioned on a slide during today's Unpacked 2019 event, is launching exclusively in South Korea.

As for why other countries are only getting the Note 10 Plus 5G, there are a few possible reasons. It's not unusual for Samsung to treat its home country to exclusive variations of its devices, and given that many of South Korea's cities are densely populated, it's an ideal testing ground for the Note 10 5G models.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 vs. Galaxy S10 vs. iPhone XS: comparing three small-ish flagship phones

Posted: 07 Aug 2019 03:14 PM PDT

Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is, by no means, a small phone. Its 6.3-inch AMOLED screen is just a few millimeters smaller than the iPhone XS Max's display. But, as Dieter Bohn noted in his hands-on impressions post, the Note 10 is something different for Samsung.

While the Note 10 Plus feels more like the true Note 9 successor, the Note 10 has a similar feel in the hand to smaller phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the iPhone XS. So it's worth comparing to other smaller flagship phones that you might also be considering.

There's a lot that sets the Note 10 apart from those other devices. For example, the Note 10 has the S Pen stylus, which puts Samsung's new phone above the rest if you like to jot down notes or take advantage of...

The lesson from Elon Musk’s ‘funding secured’ mess is to never tweet

Never tweet. It's a simple rule that you, me, and everyone who uses the hellish but seemingly indispensable social media platform should follow — if not exactly by the letter, then certainly in spirit. And there's perhaps no greater example of that truism than the tweet sent one year ago today by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

"Am considering taking Tesla private at $420," he tweeted on August 7th, 2018. "Funding secured." Those few words — the last two specifically — created an entirely new fire for Musk to put out at a time when he was already mired in the self-described "hell" of Model 3 production. He did not, as it turned out, have any funding secured to do such a thing.

Here’s where you’ll be able to preorder the Samsung Galaxy Note 10

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Note 10 lineup, which, unlike past years, consists of two different phones: the Galaxy Note 10 and the Note 10 Plus, and they're the first Samsung flagship phones without a headphone jack. Actually, there's a third: the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G. It's exclusive to Verizon for now, though it will be coming to other carriers later.

Starting first thing tomorrow, August 8th, at 12:01AM ET, the Galaxy Note 10 phones will be available for preorder through Samsung and US carriers. No matter where you purchase the phone, doing so before August 23rd (the release date) will get you a $100 Samsung gift card ($150 if you buy the Note 10 Plus or Note 10 Plus 5G). To get the gift card, you'll have to register...
