This screenshot might be the first explicit confirmation of Apple’s AR headset Posted: 10 Sep 2019 06:25 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge It's no secret that Apple's been quietly trying to build an augmented reality headset. Over the past several years, Apple has hired, acquired, attempted to patent and repeatedly talked up the idea — Apple CEO Tim Cook called AR as big an idea as the smartphone, and reportedly had 1,000 engineers working on the tech in 2017. But despite repeated rumors that Apple is getting ready to produce such a headset — Bloomberg, CNET and reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have all suggested Apple's aiming to produce it in 2019 and ship it in 2020 — it's only today that we're seeing what appears to be explicit confirmation from Apple itself that an AR headset is being tested inside the company. It comes to us in the form of this screenshot from iOS... |
Google’s Apple Arcade competitor Play Pass is officially on the way Posted: 10 Sep 2019 05:27 PM PDT Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge Earlier this year, screenshots leaked of an experimental Google Play game subscription service called Google Play Pass, which looked to be a direct answer to Apple's similar Apple Arcade. But it doesn't seem to be a test anymore — Google has now teased that Play Pass is officially "coming soon."
The teaser, a day before Apple revealed pricing and launch details for Apple Arcade, has zero details — so we'll have to keep waiting to learn more about when the service is coming, how much it will cost, and which games will be available. But we do have those early leaked screenshots, first reported on by Android... |
Apple Watch Studio lets you make the Apple Watch of your dreams Posted: 10 Sep 2019 04:40 PM PDT Today, coinciding with the announcement of the Apple Watch Series 5, Apple has launched Apple Watch Studio, a way to mix and match Watch casings and Watch straps to order the exact Apple Watch Series 5 that you want. It's available right now on Apple's website and in the Apple Store App, and will be coming to Apple's retail stores in the future. Previously, Apple only let you customize your Watch by picking from Apple-selected sets of casings and straps, and by buying individual straps to add afterwards. Apple did offer a lot of different casing/strap combos, but if you wanted, say, the stainless steel watch with a link bracelet, you would have had to buy them separately. With Apple Watch Studio, you don't have to buy anything extra. P... |
AirDrop on the iPhone 11 will let you point at people to share photos Posted: 10 Sep 2019 01:48 PM PDT Image: Apple One of the understated components of Apple's iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro is the new U1 chip. It didn't get a prominent callout onstage at today's announcement event, but it will underpin what Apple says are "amazing new capabilities" coming to iOS devices in the future, including a more accurate, directional version of AirDrop coming with iOS 13. The "U" in U1 stands for "ultra-wideband," which is the technology Apple is using to power new location tracking features for its smartphones and, hopefully soon, other accessories, too. The U1 chip effectively lets the newest iPhone locate and communicate with other U1 devices in a more accurate and speedy fashion. Think of... |

Scraping public data from a website probably isn’t hacking, says court Posted: 10 Sep 2019 01:22 PM PDT Scraping data from a website likely doesn't violate anti-hacking laws as long as the data is public, a US court has concluded. Yesterday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals said LinkedIn probably couldn't tell an analytics company to stop pulling profile information from its platform. LinkedIn had sent the company, HiQ, a cease-and-desist letter — which has been enough to declare companies "unauthorized" in earlier cases. Here, however, the court ruled that LinkedIn couldn't use anti-hacking rules to control how HiQ used the data. As University of California, Berkeley professor and computer law expert Orin Kerr lays out, this seemingly limits one section of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). The CFAA prohibits accessing a computer... |
Audi’s new concept is an all-electric off-roader with drones for headlights Posted: 10 Sep 2019 01:11 PM PDT Audi is not a brand you'd typically associate with off-road adventures, but that didn't stop the automaker from kicking up some dirt with its new concept at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Audi AI:Trail (maybe it's less of a mouthful in German?) is an all-electric, all-terrain vehicle for the future of outdoor adventures. Before we get to the specs, keep in mind this is just a concept and may not ever make its way to production. That said, Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, claims it will actually build the electric dune buggy concept it introduced earlier this year — so who knows for sure? The AI:Trail is fourth in a series of autonomous concepts from Audi, preceded by the Audi AI:Con, AI:Me, and AI:Race. It's definitely an... |
Uber announces another round of layoffs as financial uncertainty looms Posted: 10 Sep 2019 12:54 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Uber announced an additional round of layoffs Tuesday, this time from its product and engineering teams. A total of 435 people were let go, or around 8 percent of the ride-hailing company's entire workforce. The news, which was first reported by TechCrunch, comes a few months after Uber said it would be cutting 400 employees from its marketing division. This latest round of layoffs comes after a brutal second quarter for Uber, with the company missing its revenue projections and reporting a record $5.2 billion net loss. In August, Uber confirmed that it had put in place a hiring freeze on new software engineers and product managers, but now — even as it cuts hundreds of workers — the company says that freeze has been lifted. |
The iPhone 11 Pro comes with a USB-C 18W wall charger and USB-C to Lightning cable Posted: 10 Sep 2019 12:41 PM PDT For the first time since the original iPhone was released back in 2007, Apple is finally upgrading the included wall plug and cable that comes in the box: the newly announced iPhone 11 Pro will — at long last — come with a fast-charging 18W USB-C charger and a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box. Sadly, the change isn't universal: the cheaper iPhone 11 will still come with the same terrible 5W brick and USB-A cable that Apple's been offering for more than a decade, despite having the same fast-charging capabilities as the iPhone 11 Pro, meaning that you'll still have to shell out for a new brick and cable if you want to charge it faster or even plug it into a modern Apple laptop. Still, the change — at least for the pricier iPhones — is... |
The 5 biggest announcements from Apple’s September 2019 event Posted: 10 Sep 2019 12:40 PM PDT Apple's big hardware event for 2019 has wrapped, and, as expected, it brought a bounty of exciting announcements. Of course, the iPhone 11 happened — and, yes, a version is really called the iPhone 11 Pro Max — but there were a bunch of other good moments that are worth talking about. If you weren't able to follow along with this year's Apple fall hardware event or if you just want to relive it again, you can read the live blog to see the moments unfold as they happened or check out this brief recap on the biggest announcements.
