Firefox is testing a VPN, and you can try it right now

Last week, Mozilla said its Firefox browser would block third-party trackers for everyone by default and yesterday, Mozilla announced a new product that could give Firefox users even more privacy on the web: the Firefox Private Network, which claims to be "a secure, encrypted path to the web" — essentially, a Firefox-made VPN (though Mozilla never calls it one).

The Firefox Private Network seems like it could be useful, but it does have its limits. It's a browser-based VPN, so it won't mask anything you're doing on the internet outside of Firefox — you'd need to install a dedicated VPN app if you want to protect more of your internet traffic. Mozilla recommends using Firefox Private Network if you want to have an encrypted connection...

Uber argues its drivers aren’t core to its business, won’t reclassify them as employees

Uber won't be reclassifying its drivers from independent contractors to employees in light of a new bill that passed in California, largely because the bill doesn't specifically require them to do so, the company's chief legal official argued Tuesday.

"Contrary to some of the rhetoric we've heard, AB5 does not automatically reclassify any ride-share drivers from independent contractors to employees," Tony West, chief legal counsel at Uber, said in a press call with reporters. "AB5 does not provide drivers with benefits. AB5 does not give drivers the right to organize. In fact, the bill currently says nothing about ride-share drivers."

The bill in question, Assembly Bill 5 (AB5), codifies a recent California Supreme Court ruling that...

College student tried to hack into Trump’s taxes by creating a fake FAFSA application

Two college students are facing federal prison time for attempting to hack into President Trump's tax returns, as reported by CyberScoop. Andrew Harris, 24, and Justin Hiemstra, 22, tried to import the president's financial records through a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Both men have pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor accounts for violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and face up to two years behind bars.

In 2016, when Trump was running for office, he refused to release his tax returns as most presidential candidates do. The tax returns have become a much-sought item for liberal activists in the subsequent years, and the subject of intense reporting by The New York Times and other publications.

Apple’s 1TB iPad Pro just got $200 cheaper

Apple has slashed the price of its 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros with 1TB of storage by $200. The savings apply to both Wi-Fi and cellular models. So the 11-inch 1TB iPad Pro is now $1,349 for Wi-Fi only or $1,499 if you want LTE, while the larger 12.9-inch device is $1,549 or $1,699. MacRumors first reported the change.

Retailers like Best Buy and B&H have periodically sold the 1TB iPad Pros at a similar discount, but this marks an official price change. Apple hasn't changed pricing for other storage sizes of its flagship tablet, however.

Rumors have indicated that Apple might be planning an iPad Pro update before the end of this year — perhaps to add the new triple-camera system from the iPhone 11 Pro, among other upgrades. If it...

Civilization VI is the latest improbable game to get a battle royale mode

Posted: 11 Sep 2019 12:46 PM PDT

PUBG. Fortnite. Battlefield. Call of Duty. Mario. Tetris. Flappy Bird. It's practically a joke within the gaming world that if a game exists, it'll eventually get a battle royale version or mode. But the latest entry might take the cake: Civilization VI, the popular turn-based strategy game, via Rock Paper Shotgun.

You may be wondering how Civilization, a franchise in which players slowly and meticulously build their global societies up over time scales that span the whole of human history, can combine with the battle royale genre, which sees players frantically trying to eliminate rivals to be the last person standing as a constantly encroaching fog of war shrinks the play area.

The answer is through a new mode called "Red Death,"...

World of Warcraft is dominating Twitch because Fortnite streamers are desperate for change

Posted: 11 Sep 2019 12:19 PM PDT

Fortnite fans perusing Twitch for their favorite streamers to watch have been running into an issue for the past couple of weeks: almost all of the biggest names in the community are playing a different game.

It's not a battle royale title or even a competitive multiplayer game; it's a largely cooperative fantasy RPG that came out 15 years ago. Maybe you've heard the name before: World of Warcraft, the Blizzard-produced massively multiplayer online game that was released in its classic, preexpansion form on August 26th but was originally released in November 2004.

According to streaming production provider StreamElements, viewership of World of Warcraft on Twitch jumped 83 percent in August alone, thanks largely to WoW Classic and...

What we’re still waiting for after Apple’s iPhone 11 event

The rumor mill was remarkably right. On Tuesday, Apple revealed practically everything we expected it to reveal at its "By Innovation Only" iPhone 11 event. You can watch our supercut (above), read our recap, or skim through our detailed live blog for all the highlights, but arguably the only true surprises were these:

But what about all the things Apple didn't announce? These are the biggest surprises we're still waiting for — and if history's any guide, you'll see some of them at a...

Apple’s HomePod will soon let you play ocean waves, birdsong, or rainstorms while you sleep

Apple yesterday managed to sneak in a few updates to its HomePod speaker in between iPhone-related announcements, including the addition of a brand-new feature.

Later this fall, the HomePod will be able to help you relax by playing "the soothing sounds of ocean waves, forest birds, rainstorms, and more," or what Apple calls Ambient Sounds. Apple hasn't provided any other details, but we'd assume you'll just need to ask Siri to play ambient noises to make your room feel like an oceanside villa. The feature was first spotted by 9to5Mac.

Apple isn't the first to let you turn your smart speaker into a white noise player — Google Home has been able to play ambient noise since...

How to preorder the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max

Apple has announced the iPhone 11 lineup, including the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. Each phone will release on September 20th, and preorders begin this Friday, September 13th, at 5:01AM PT / 8:01AM ET. That's a few hours later than Apple usually kicks off preorders, so you'll either get to sleep in a little more or wake up earlier than before (depending on where you live).

Unlike Samsung and most other phone makers, Apple doesn't offer much in the way of preorder incentives for its phones, and the iPhone 11 models are no exception. However, trading in your old iPhone may knock a decent chunk off of the final price for a new iPhone, depending on its overall physical condition.

Apple shared that the iPhone 8 Plus will be...
