The National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) has asked the courts to allow it to double its claims against exercise bike and treadmill startup Peloton, after discovering more unlicensed music — including songs by Taylor Swift and Kesha — being used in workout videos that play on the bikes' built-in screens. It's now seeking $300 million in damages, as reported by Forbes.

The original complaint, filed in March, accused Peloton of using over 1,000 songs without getting the proper license. At the time, NMPA requested $150 million in damages. After the lawsuit was filed, the offending songs conveniently disappeared, upsetting connected exercise equipment owners who'd gotten used to their beloved playlists.

But not all the songs...

Free stock trading could come to Square’s Cash app

Square's Cash App already lets you do more than just pay back your friends for lunch — the app started letting users buy and sell Bitcoin back in 2017. Soon, it may give you access to another kind of investment: Square is testing a feature to let users buy and sell stocks for free, according to Bloomberg.

We don't know how this might actually work, and Bloomberg didn't share any details that it may or may not have seen. Square does make buying Bitcoin on the Cash App pretty easy, so hopefully it brings that same simplicity to its stock trading. Free stock trading app Robinhood already lets you buy and sell stocks and cryptocurrencies with minimal friction, but Square's Cash App could maybe become a one-stop-shop for transferring money...

Disney CEO Bob Iger has resigned from Apple's board, just a couple of months before both companies are set to launch their independent streaming services.

Iger resigned on September 10th, according to a filing from Apple to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. That's the same day Apple unveiled the launch date and subscription price for Apple TV Plus, which officially made Apple and Disney competitors.

"I have the utmost respect for Tim Cook, his team at Apple and for my fellow board members," Iger said in a statement published by The Hollywood Reporter. "Apple is one of the world's most admired companies, known for the quality and integrity of its products and its people, and I am forever grateful to have served as a member of...

Watch Apple throw cake, and many other things, at the iPhone 11 Pro in its new ads

Posted: 13 Sep 2019 01:29 PM PDT

Apple has released two new commercials for the iPhone 11 Pro, both of which show the phone standing up to more abuse than any one phone should ever have to.

The first ad below focuses solely on how tough the iPhone 11 Pro supposedly is against everyday objects being flung at it in a high-speed wind tunnel. First, kids toys and food items pummel it (including an entire head of green leaf lettuce), none of which seem heavy enough to damage the phone.

Things get a little more intense later in the ad, with ice cubes and hair brushes bouncing off of the iPhone 11 Pro — all, of course, without leaving a scratch. To top it off, a wedding cake comes crashing down onto the phone, then a sprinkler washes it all off. Maybe it's just me, but in...

MoviePass is shutting down tomorrow

MoviePass, the subscription service that spent enormous amounts of venture capitalists' money subsidizing movie tickets in a bid to upend the theater business model, is officially shutting down on September 14th. The news was announced today via emails to subscribers and separately in a press release issued by parent company Helios and Matheson. It marks the end of a tumultuous two-year saga that saw a once-popular platform go to extreme lengths to keep its business running, despite the obvious and fraught financial cost.

Last we heard of MoviePass, the company was laying off huge swaths of its staff, including the team responsible for brokering partnerships with movie theaters, following a sudden, supposedly temporary shutdown of its...

Everybody working in genre movies these days wants their own long-running franchise. The financial success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has brought in billions worldwide for Disney and Marvel Studios, has become a kind of holy grail for other film studios, which keep trying to design their own series of interconnected films, generally with limited success.

The latest arrival on the scene comes from an unexpected source: Indonesia, where the studio Bumilangit is openly out to create a "Bumilangit Cinematic Universe," drawing on a library of...

CNN will stop running Juul and other e-cigarette ads after vaping deaths

CNN will no longer run ads for Juul or other e-cigarettes, following reports of a deadly lung illness linked to them. The Daily Beast reports that CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker announced the news at an employee meeting; the network also confirmed it in a statement to the outlet. However, it says the policy may change in the future as health agencies continue to investigate the disease.

"Given the recent news reports of serious illnesses and deaths linked to the product category and the subsequent warnings ... CNN has revised its policies regarding e-cigarette advertising, and will not air ads in this category effective immediately," a spokesperson told The Daily Beast. The ban might be lifted if "new facts come to light" during the...

J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions has signed a new overall deal reportedly worth $250 million with WarnerMedia, but the director apparently walked away from a $500 million offer from Apple in the process.

Abrams and his team at Bad Robot, including co-CEO Katie McGrath, were reportedly uninterested in signing a 100 percent exclusive deal with Apple for the company's new streaming service, Apple TV Plus, according to The Hollywood Reporter. His deal with WarnerMedia allows Abrams to direct, write, and produce projects at Bad Robot for other third-party companies, according to the original announcement. For someone like Abrams, who still has projects in development at Paramount Pictures (his previous feature film home), a new Star Wars...

Adobe Premiere Pro will use AI to reframe videos for all of your social apps

Posted: 13 Sep 2019 11:20 AM PDT

Adobe is hoping to eliminate the tedious, time-consuming process that comes with editing videos for different social platforms with its new AI-powered Auto Reframe feature for Premiere Pro. For example, if you've got a video that you want to post to YouTube, the Instagram grid, and Instagram Stories, you'd currently have to manually edit that video for three different aspect ratios. Auto Reframe can automatically identify the main action happening in the video and crop and pan the frame around that footage to fit within ratios like square, vertical, or 16:9 videos. The feature, shown off today at the International Broadcasting Convention, makes use of Adobe Sensei, the company's artificial intelligence platform.

Auto Reframe is an...
