Twitter rolls out “hide replies” to let you tame toxic discussions Posted: 19 Sep 2019 05:41 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitter announced today that it's giving people more control over the conversations they start with a new feature that lets them hide replies. The company has been testing the feature in Canada and is now rolling it out in the US and Japan as well. The move is part of a concerted effort the tech giant is making to stop the spread of hate and vitriol online. Previously, users could only manage their individual experience of a conversation by muting certain keywords so they no longer showed up in notifications, or by blocking specific users altogether. They couldn't change how others engaged in the debate, which proved problematic when lively discussions inevitably began to melt down. N... |
Google Maps, Waze, and Pandora now work natively with Siri on iOS 13 Posted: 19 Sep 2019 05:22 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple's release of iOS 13 today means third-party developers can now release apps that can access Siri without any configuration on your end. Before iOS 13, trying to use a non-Apple app with Siri required setting up a Siri Shortcut. Sometimes, even that wouldn't work. But now, iOS 13 users can finally tap into native Siri features, unlocking a number of useful possibilities. One situation in need of more hands-free options is when you're driving and need to keep your eyes on the road. A few app makers have already released updates today that could make using Siri while driving a much better, and safer, experience. If, for example, you want to ask Siri to give you directions from an app other than Apple Maps, you can now ask Siri to... |
Facebook may copy your app, but Amazon will copy your shoe Posted: 19 Sep 2019 04:17 PM PDT Image: Amazon Copying has a long and rich history in Silicon Valley, from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' infamous raiding of Xerox PARC to the legal nightmare that is the Apple-Samsung smartphone design dispute to the almost company-crushing extent Facebook has gone to keep Instagram ahead of Snapchat. But while Facebook has earned itself a reputation as a modern tech giant unashamed of cloning its biggest competitors' best features, Amazon has gone one step further. That's right, it's cloned a shoe. To be precise, Amazon has copied the hallmark product of Bay Area-based apparel company Allbirds, which coincidentally took Silicon Valley by storm a few years ago with its low-maintenance, ultra-comfortable running shoe. Kudos to Tinder product chief... |
Here’s why so many apps are asking to use Bluetooth on iOS 13 Posted: 19 Sep 2019 02:10 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple's new iOS 13 update adds a new privacy measure that requires apps to get your consent in order to use your device's Bluetooth. After installing the latest version of iOS, trust me when I say you'll be surprised by the number of apps asking for Bluetooth permission the next time you open them. Some might seem very strange (like Dunkin' Donuts in my case), but others probably won't make you think twice about giving the thumbs-up. The reason Apple implemented this is because Bluetooth has enabled companies to sneakily track your location over Bluetooth by using beacons in stores, shopping malls, and even on popular city streets if they're placed within range of a place you'd walk by. This is entirely separate from your... |
Banning flavored vapes won’t stop deadly lung disease Posted: 19 Sep 2019 01:22 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge As the number of respiratory illnesses linked to e-cigarettes continues to rise, lawmakers and governors in states across the country are pushing for regulations on the products — including bans on flavors and increased oversight of counterfeit cartridges. But well-intentioned as they may be, it's not clear that the proposals are targeting the source of the problem, or what kind of public health benefits they'll have in the future. "I think the best regulations are those that are informed by science. That isn't the case here," says Thomas Eissenberg, co-director of the Center for the Study of Tobacco Products at Virginia Commonwealth University. B... |
Google makes ‘biggest corporate purchase’ of renewable energy ahead of climate strikes Posted: 19 Sep 2019 01:10 PM PDT Photo credit should read JOSH EDELSON/AFP/Getty Images On Thursday, Google announced its plan to make "the biggest corporate purchase of renewable energy in history." This announcement precedes a day of walkouts by tech employees, including those from Google, who are participating in the Global Climate Strike. The tech workers are demanding their employers take stronger actions to combat climate change. Google's purchase includes a 1,600-megawatt package of wind and solar agreements and 18 new energy deals, increasing the company's agreements by 40 percent, according to Google. More than $2 billion will go to building out new infrastructure across the United States, Europe, and Chile as well. This purchase is "equivalent to the capacity of a million solar rooftops," Google's CEO Sundar... |

Microsoft’s next Surface Pen looks like it’ll have wireless charging Posted: 19 Sep 2019 11:50 AM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge An updated version of Microsoft's Surface Pen, which is expected to be announced at the company's annual fall hardware event on October 2nd, may come with wireless charging. An FCC filing for the stylus refers to a "charging coil," pointing to the possibility that the pen will have an internal power source, allowing for it to be used without AAAA batteries like the pen's current model does. Teardowns for competitor styluses with wireless charging have revealed coils being used for this exact purpose. In this JerryRigEverything teardown of the Galaxy Note 10 Plus' S-Pen, a charging coil can be found toward the tip of the pen, showing how the pen is charged through the phone. The Apple Pencil 2, which charges by magnetically attaching to... |
Google offshoot Wing is teaming up with FedEx and Walgreens for drone deliveries Posted: 19 Sep 2019 11:12 AM PDT Wing, the drone delivery service that's an offshoot of Google parent company Alphabet, will launch its first pilot service in Virginia starting in October 2019. The company is teaming up with FedEx, Walgreens, and gift purveyor Sugar Magnolia to deliver health care products, food, and more to residents of the town of Christiansburg in southwest Virginia. The pilot, which is part of the US Department of Transportation's Integration Pilot Program, aims to demonstrate the viability of drone delivery, which is still very much in a nascent stage of development. Earlier this year, Wing became one of the first drone operators to be certified as a commercial air carrier by the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing it to autonomously deliver... |
Using the Apple Card at T-Mobile stores will earn you 3 percent cash back starting Friday Posted: 19 Sep 2019 10:55 AM PDT If you've got an Apple Card, you can already get 3 percent cash back buying products and software from Apple as well as purchases at Walgreens, Uber, and Uber Eats. Starting on Friday, you'll also be able to get 3 percent cash back for Apple Card purchases at T-Mobile stores, just in time for tomorrow's iPhone 11 launch. T-Mobile is pushing this new partnership alongside a promotion to get 50 percent off the purchase of a new iPhone "with eligible trade-in," so using an Apple Card could kick a little more money your way on what already is a solid deal on an expensive phone. Interestingly, T-Mobile says the Apple Card's 3 percent cash back perk applies to "all purchases" made at a T-Mobile store. So if you really wanted to, you could buy... |
