With four different Galaxy S10s, four Galaxy Note 10s, and the impending launches of two Galaxy Folds, Samsung's flagship lineup for this year has officially reached ten phones. Perhaps this is too many, but Samsung doesn't seem to think so. It's now releasing a blockchain-branded variant of the Galaxy Note 10 to bring in customers holding out for a cryptocurrency-focused Samsung flagship.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Galaxy Note 10 variant, which is only available in South Korea, will be marketed as a "KlaytnPhone." It's named for a blockchain platform made by the blockchain arm of Kakao, a South Korean messaging company. WSJ says the KlaytnPhone will have a crypto wallet and blockchain apps built in, and will also give...

Foxconn’s first announced product for its Wisconsin factory is an airport coffee robot

Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn is expanding its controversial Wisconsin presence with automated coffee robots. The manufacturer, known best for helping create the world's most popular electronics devices predominantly in its Chinese factories, today announced a partnership with a Texas-based company called Briggo, which makes automated coffee dispensers the size of modest mall kiosks mostly for airports and corporate offices. The news was reported by the Milwaukee Business Times.

Foxconn will help the company manufacture its units in its Wisconsin LCD factory, which doesn't exist yet — and thus produces no LCDs, or any other product for that matter — and which Foxconn has previously claimed it plans to use for a variety of...

Medium is toying with being the place for all your longreads — even if they’re paywalled

medium

Medium has become a popular place for people who don't run their own websites to post long essays and scathing exposes, in addition to producing some original journalism, all in an elegant interface that lends itself to longform reading.

But a new experimental "Save to Medium" feature discovered by app sleuth Jane Manchun Wong suggests Medium has bigger aims — it might like to be the place you read all those lengthy web-based stories you don't have time to read right away.

It's called "Save to Medium," and it...

8chan could be back online as soon as next week, lawyer says

Posted: 05 Sep 2019 03:54 PM PDT

Jim Watkins, YouTube

8chan owner Jim Watkins provided evidence to congressional staffers on Thursday to comply with a subpoena the House Homeland Security Committee issued him after a series of racist manifestos from mass shooters were posted on the site. His site has remained down since shortly after the shooting — but new statements made to The Verge suggest it may be coming back sooner than many expected.

According to Watkins's lawyer, Benjamin Barr, 8chan's owners hope to have the site back online in the next week or so. In his prepared remarks for the committee, Watkins said that 8chan is currently "offline voluntarily" and that it may come back online soon, once the site "is able to develop additional tools to counter illegal content under United...

Nintendo teases strange new motion control experience for Switch

Posted: 05 Sep 2019 03:26 PM PDT

Fresh off its Nintendo Direct announcements yesterday, the gaming company is already teasing a "new experience" for the Switch — some sort of bizarre new motion controller accessory that uses the console's Joy-Con controllers, promising more details on September 12th.

The teaser is light on details but it appears that there's two pieces of the device: a primary, flexible ring that one Joy-Con half is inserted into, and which has some additional handles around the circumference that seems to be the main "controller", and a secondary leg strap that the other Joy-Con goes in (perhaps for some fitness tracking features?) The video shows players vigorously squeezing the ring, jumping around, and running in place, which seems to imply that...

Investigation into vaping illness hones in on one substance

US officials working to track down the cause of a rash of lung illnesses connected to vaping are honing in on one potential contaminant as the investigation continues.

The substance in question is an oil derived from Vitamin E, The Washington Post reports. Vitamin E can be found in almonds and avocados, and the oil derived from it is commonly used in beauty products and nutritional supplements. But inhaling it could pose risks. The oil, Vitamin E acetate, acts like a grease coating a vaper's lungs, Bryn Mawr College chemistry professor Michelle Francl told The Post.

The Centers for Disease Control says that as of August 27th, there have been 215 cases reported across 25 states...

Volkswagen will help turn old Beetles and microbuses electric

Volkswagen has announced a new way for vintage Beetle owners to convert their cars to battery electric power. The automaker is partnering with a German firm called eClassics that will actually perform the retrofits, while VW will provide the batteries and powertrain.

VW says it's already working on an electric conversion solution for vintage microbuses, too. Beyond that, "[a]n e-Porsche 356 could also be pursued in the future," board member Thomas Schmall says. The German automaker says it's even considering how it might use the modular MEB platform that will power many of its forthcoming electric cars in future conversions.

Instead of mating new electric motors and batteries to the cars' existing drivetrains, as many upstart retrofit...

LG’s new G8X ThinQ bets that two screens are better than a foldable one

In the shadow of Samsung taking a second attempt at launching the Galaxy Fold, LG has come to IFA 2019 with a different approach to unfolding a phone's potential: dual screens. Today the company is announcing the LG G8X ThinQ, and with it comes a revised take on the "Dual Screen" snap-on case that LG launched in Korea with the V50 earlier this year. LG says it's been at work on this idea since long before foldables became the buzzy thing of 2019.

The secondary screen now connects over USB-C instead of with the help of pogo pins. It's now the same size as the phone's primary 6.4-inch FHD+ display so they look like a more natural pair. The hinge is much improved and offers full 360-degree tilt freedom with good sturdiness. On the outside...

Verizon 5G is barely coming to ‘parts of the seating areas’ at some NFL stadiums

Verizon is continuing the rollout of its fast but spotty 5G service by bringing 5G to 13 NFL stadiums for kickoff weekend this Sunday. But the speedier network will only be available in "parts of the seating areas" and "could" be available in other parts of the stadiums. That type of hedging doesn't exactly inspire confidence that Verizon's 5G will let you post that touchdown celebration from the stands.

5G is still in its infancy, and carriers, including Verizon, are rushing to get networks up and running, sometimes at the cost of reliable service. The Verge's Chris Welch went to Chicago to test Verizon 5G in May, shortly after its launch, and he said it showed truly next-gen download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second... if you...
