How to pair a PS4 or Xbox controller with your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Android device

The DualShock 4 and Xbox One controllers were originally made to work on their respective consoles, but thanks to Apple's recent software updates, you can more easily pair them via Bluetooth with your iOS 13 device, iPadOS tablet, or your Apple TV via tvOS 13. Android 10 makes it super easy to pair either controller, too, and you can pair with previous versions of Android and iOS as well.

This is probably of particular interest If you subscribe to Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass, as you can play several of the games on offer from either service with a controller. Fortnite paved the way for expanding controller support when it arrived on select phones, but the PS4 and Xbox controllers (though not all Xbox controllers) work on mobile with...

The latest Pixel 4 leak is an app that automatically transcribes your voice memos

Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:18 PM PDT

We already seem to know a lot about Google's upcoming Pixel 4, including one of its new apps: "Recorder," a new voice recorder app. In a recent 9to5Google hands-on, the app seemed pretty basic — hit a button to record, then share that audio file with other apps. Surprisingly, though, Google seems to have updated Recorder before it's even been released, with one particularly handy feature: automatic audio transcription.

XDA Developers tested the new transcription feature, and it seems like it worked decently enough. The transcription of XDA Developers' test recording messed up the name of the speaker (Mishaal Rahman) and added a few too many periods, but it's still pretty readable:

Kanye West’s ‘Yandhi’ ringtones appear to be a scam, and they’re now gone

Posted: 01 Oct 2019 03:48 PM PDT

Kanye West's Yandhi briefly appeared online after its release was pushed back multiple times in 2018, but in an unlikely place: as iTunes ringtones. Reddit users discovered the Yandhi ringtone snippets, which linked back to West's artist page on iTunes, prompting reports from outlets like Vulture and Heavy to speculate that this is how Kanye intended his new project to roll out. Unfortunately, evidence suggests the ringtones are a scam, scraped from leaked copies of the original tracks, with none of the money headed back to West himself. The ringtones were recently removed from iTunes, likely because they were not official.

There has been incredible anticipation around Yandhi, with people going as far as to crowdfund the purchase of song...

Pokémon’s saddest creature, Mimikyu, finally gets its due

Posted: 01 Oct 2019 01:01 PM PDT

Every time some very kind person mistakenly compliments the cute, anxious-looking Mimikyu tattooed on my forearm for Pikachu, I become giddy because I get to talk about Pokémon's best.

Now, after trailing in Pikachu's shadow for too long, The Pokémon Company is talking about him, too. The company's social media team is dedicating the entire month of October to celebrate Mimikyu, who first made its debut in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon in November 2016. The company tweeted its plans to pay homage to "this lonely, terrifying Pokémon — who really just wants to snuggle" all month long, but didn't suggest what that entails. There could be some cool Mimikyu-related swag (perhaps a new plushie?) or maybe there's nothing at all beyond a series...

UPS just won FAA approval to fly as many delivery drones as it wants

UPS announced that it has received government approval to operate a "drone airline." Don't expect your next package to arrive directly on your doorstep by a drone, though: UPS says it will first use this certification to build a drone delivery network for hospital campuses around the US. UPS said in July that it was seeking permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate the network, and today, it got just that.

Specifically, UPS's drone delivery subsidiary, UPS Flight Forward, was granted a Part 135 Standard certification. Though drones might not seem like aircraft that need to be regulated like commercial airplanes do, the federal government evaluates them on similar footing. Drone delivery companies have to be...

TwitchCon was a reminder that streamers are big business

The internet is real life, but the place where the internet meets real life is still messy as hell. TwitchCon, which was held at San Diego's convention center this year — the same place where the biggest comic con in America happens every year — is the site of one of those collisions, where IRL meets URL. I just got back from the convention floor, which was a riot of people of different ages, abilities, and ethnicities. (The brands were there, too.) It looked, in other words, like Twitch: live, a little dorky, and totally enthusiastic.

Historically, TwitchCon has functioned mainly as an excuse for people to see each other and for fans to meet their favorite personalities in person. The vibe is very family reunion: convivial, but also a...

Apple Arcade is a home for premium games that lost their place on mobile

For more than six years, designer Zach Gage has been toying with an idea for a game where players explore dangerous dungeons, but did so through various cards stacked in a grid, rifling through piles to heal or fight a monster. It's an idea he played with endlessly, until around two years ago when he turned it into a functioning prototype that he'd show only trusted friends.

But Gage wanted to do something bigger than he was used to. He made a name for himself with twists on existing games like Sage Solitaire and Really Bad Chess, but he also typically developed games solo. His new idea, he thought, would be perfect for a bigger production, with lots of great art to showcase monster designs and spell cards. The problem was that the state...

Why the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t care about secret identities

Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:59 AM PDT

In August, Sony and Marvel announced that Spider-Man would no longer be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, due to disagreements about the revenue split between Disney and Sony, and the involvement of MCU architect Kevin Feige. It appeared as if Sony would be taking its own tack on secret superhero Peter Parker, without needing to integrate him into the continuity of films that began with 2008's Iron Man.

The split came at a particularly relevant time, since the latest Sony / Marvel co-op project, Spider-Man: Far From Home, had just taken a radical step with the character. In a mid-credits scene in the film, antagonist Mysterio brings down Spider-Man's world by revealing Peter's secret identity. It was a major change for a series that...

Samsung Galaxy S10 gets DeX support and Note 10 camera features

A new Galaxy S10 software update is bringing headline features from the Note 10 to Samsung's other flagship phone line. SamMobile reports that the update is rolling out in certain regions right now for the Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, and S10E, and includes support for DeX PC connectivity, Live Focus blur effects in video recordings, and other camera features. It also includes this month's Android security patch.

Samsung later confirmed the rollout had begun in Europe, and issued a second press release on October 1st adding that they'd also come to the UK.

Samsung revamped its DeX concept with the Note 10, letting you access your phone's apps from any computer rather than requiring a separate monitor setup. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we found...

Twitter now lets anyone on iOS search DMs for long lost message threads

Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:25 AM PDT

Twitter has announced that it's launching direct message search for all users on iOS starting today, October 1st. The feature, which has long been a top request for avid users, first entered into testing last month when Twitter said it would only work with your "most recent DMs." It also doesn't let you search the content of messages; you have to type in the names of people or groups.

Still, it's better than nothing. At the time of writing this article, I have access to the new feature, and it appears to work both for recent DMs and older messages, too. Initial searches will mine your most recent exchanges (although it's not clear how far back Twitter considers "recent"), and then a second prompt for "search older messages" will pull up...
