SoftBank takes over 80 percent of WeWork

WeWork and SoftBank have announced a deal that will see the Japanese tech giant buy out around 80 percent of the beleaguered real estate company. Marcelo Claure, the former CEO of Sprint — which SoftBank acquired in 2012 — will be the new executive chairman at WeWork. Adam Neumann, the founder and CEO who is receiving more than a billion dollars to leave, will become a "board observer" without voting power. Artie Minson and Sebastian Gunningham remain co-CEOs of WeWork.

SoftBank is already WeWork's largest investor, to the tune of more than $10 billion. The new deal includes $5 billion in further funding, $1.5 billion that had already been pledged for the future, and a $3 billion tender offer for existing shareholders outside SoftBank....

C’mon Google, do a Pixel cereal box giveaway for real

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 06:26 PM PDT

Creamy, crunchy, deliriously sweet kids' cereal and milk was my nectar and ambrosia growing up. I would have eaten that stuff day and night — even if there weren't toys occasionally waiting inside. Those days I got my Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs and a chance at a delightful new toy? Those were the best.

Sadly, Google's marketing team didn't quite capture that nostalgia in a new Pixel 4 giveaway — because the picture you see above (and its associated video) is a terrible, terrible lie.

Can you imagine the anticipation of cracking open a box of cereal wondering if a free $800+ smartphone is inside? That an explosion of alkali-processed cocoa and disintegrated corn...

Google says you might have to wait to play Stadia, even if you preorder

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 05:43 PM PDT

When Google announced that its Stadia cloud gaming service would launch November 19th, we thought that meant those who shelled out $130 for a Founder's Edition would get to play right away — and when the company announced it was replacing the sold-out Founder's Edition with a new Premiere Edition earlier today, the question was: would Premiere Edition buyers get to play on November 19th too?

Today, Google tells The Verge that neither set of buyers will necessarily be able to play at 9AM PT on November 19th, the moment that Stadia launches, because Google's shipping out kits in the order they were received, and the new Premiere Edition apparently won't have shipped by that date.

Google pointed us at its blog post from last week and sure...

House overwhelmingly approves contentious new copyright bill

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to approve a measure that would shake up the Copyright Office if it were made into law, creating a small claims court where online content creators can go after their infringers.

The Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act, or the CASE Act for short, was approved by 410-6 vote. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) introduced the measure last year with the goal of giving graphic artists, photographers, and other content creators a more efficient pathway toward receiving damages if their works are infringed. Under current law, all copyright suits must go through the federal courts, a system that is often costly and time-consuming for creators who decide to litigate their...

Google’s Pixel 4 was $100 off at Amazon for a short time

Google's Pixel 4 doesn't come out until Thursday, but earlier today, it was discounted by $100 on Amazon. If you'd read this Verge post earlier today, you could have bought a 64GB Pixel 4 in "clearly white" for $699.99. Its price is now back to the standard $799.

The Pixel 4 is a pretty solid phone, so the deal was a nice way to save a good amount on Google's latest flagship. It also made the Pixel 4 the same price as Apple's 64GB iPhone 11, instead of costing more.

Even though you can't get an instant $100 off a Pixel 4 anymore, Amazon still has a nice deal on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL: when you buy either phone, you can get a $100 Amazon gift card. If you'd prefer to buy the phone elsewhere, the Google Store, Walmart, Best Buy, and...

There’s now an app that lets you pick stocks based on your astrological sign

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 04:00 PM PDT

Astrology is real, and it's strong and it's our friend. As in Morrowind, the stars you were born under govern every aspect of your life. And now you can apply those celestial insights to that most dignified form of Russian roulette: stock picking!

Bull and Moon is an app from the professional pranksters behind MSCHF — yes, it's stylized like a mid-aughts synth band, and yes, it does say "mischief," and yes, it really is a creative agency — and it's their latest effort to Zardulu the good, unsuspecting people of the world.

The app takes design cues from Co—Star and The Pattern; it's blue and gold, with the cool minimalist lines that denote au courant taste. It's very simple to use: after you download Bull and Moon, all you do is input...

SpaceX aims to provide internet coverage with Starlink constellation as soon as mid-2020

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 02:31 PM PDT

SpaceX says it plans to begin offering broadband services to customers with its massive internet-from-space initiative, known as Starlink, as early as mid-2020, SpaceNews reports. The company needs to complete six to eight launches, with 60 satellites per ride, in order to get the service up and running, SpaceX president and COO Gwynne Shotwell told reporters during a media roundtable in Washington, DC.

Starlink is SpaceX's proposed constellation of thousands of satellites, which are designed to orbit at low altitudes above the Earth and beam internet coverage to the surface below. SpaceX has so far secured licensing from the Federal Communications Commission to launch nearly 12,000 satellites into orbit. And just last week, the company...

Snap is slowly growing, but it’s banking on augmented reality to sustain it

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Snap's future depends on how well it builds its augmented reality platform. The company announced in its quarterly earnings call today that it added more users — 7 million in the last quarter — and generated more money, but it's still unprofitable and lags far behind other social platforms like Facebook and Instagram in terms of user base size. Instagram's ephemeral Stories product counts 500 million users per day as of January this year, while Snapchat counts 210 million daily active users total.

Still, in his prepared remarks, CEO Evan Spiegel detailed how important AR will be for the company's future. Spiegel says every daily active user interacts with a Snap AR product nearly 30 times a day on average. These come in the form of AR...

Kylie Jenner’s viral ‘rise and shine’ TikTok meme led to merchandise and a trademark application

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 01:19 PM PDT

In less than two weeks, Kylie Jenner's innocuous office tour video on YouTube morphed into a massive TikTok meme, which she's now turned into sold-out merchandise and a trademark application that would cover even more products.

Jenner filed the trademark application to cover merchandise using the words "rise and shine," which is a reference to the recent meme. If the trademark application is accepted, it would be applied to dresses, jackets, socks, and even cosmetics, according to the filing. There are already other filings for variations of "rise and shine," meaning there's a chance the application will be rejected.

The meme is based on an eight-second clip from a YouTube vlog Jenner published on October 10th that included a tour of...
