Chromebooks will let developers more easily sideload Android apps with Chrome OS 80 Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:57 PM PDT Chromebooks are able to run Android apps, but mostly just ones from the Google Play Store — if you wanted to install something that's not officially sanctioned, you'd generally need to flip your device into a far less secure Developer Mode and/or beam it over from a tethered phone. That won't be the case with Chrome OS 80, though — that release will allow developers to deploy apps directly to their own Chromebook, according to Google. Google tells us that this feature won't allow end users to sideload Android apps, though, as we and other publications initially suggested — it's technically not sideloading in the traditional sense of downloading and installing an APK file at all, but rather installing your own app using Google's... |
Microsoft said the Surface Laptop 3 would be easy to open — and it actually is Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:27 PM PDT Image: iFixit Earlier this month, Surface boss Panos Panay showed how you'd be able to get into the Surface Laptop 3 just by lifting off the top plate — and it turns out, it's pretty much as easy as Panay made it seem, according to iFixit's Surface Laptop 3 teardown. Previous Surface Laptops weren't easy to open up at all. You had to forcibly pry off the keyboard and top cover assembly to get to the internals — iFixit used a knife on the Surface Laptop — and when you finally got to those internals, it turned out that none of them were user-replaceable. They were so hard to work with that iFixit gave both the Surface Laptop and Surface Laptop 2 repairability scores of zero out of 10. For the Surface Laptop 3, though, iFixit says you can... |
Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ feature may get early-access release by the end of 2019 Posted: 23 Oct 2019 04:38 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Tesla may grant certain customers early access to a "feature complete" version of the company's "full self-driving" (FSD) capabilities by the end of 2019, Elon Musk said in a call with investors Wednesday. Musk said that this wasn't "for sure" — but that he thinks Tesla is on track for the release. It's a kind of limited beta test, so there won't be a bunch of Tesla vehicles driving around autonomously by the end of the year. Musk later clarified on the call that by "feature complete," he means the car will be able to drive from someone's home to their work without intervention. Drivers will still need to be ready to take control if the car runs into a problem. Some experts have taken issue with the way Musk talks about these features in... |
Fortnite’s black hole event broke Twitch and Twitter viewing records Posted: 23 Oct 2019 04:37 PM PDT Image: Epic Games It's been just over a week since Fortnite came back online following a two-day, black hole-induced hiatus. But the event, which ushered in the game's eleventh season and its all-new redesigned map, was one of the biggest singular online gaming events to date — with more than 7 million concurrent viewers across Twitch, Twitter, and YouTube. Epic Games tells The Verge that the black hole event, officially called "The End," amassed record-breaking viewership on Twitter and Twitch. It also clocked in as one of the most viewed YouTube gaming events ever, although far from the biggest live event on that platform. (Live Coachella performances from Beyonce and other more mainstream events handily have it beat.) On Twitch, more than 1.7 million... |
AT&T claims a weeks-long voicemail outage will be fixed with a single device update Posted: 23 Oct 2019 04:36 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge AT&T has been experiencing a weeks-long voicemail outage affecting some customers across the country. But it's hard to tell exactly what's causing the outage, or how long until it will be fixed — and AT&T is saying conflicting things about what's going on. Here's what the company told us, when we asked:
That statement seems to suggest that only a single phonemaker is affected, and that phonemaker might share the blame for the outage — but that wouldn't make sense, because AT&T customers are reporting a wide array of different... |
Google accused of spying with new tool that flags large employee meetings Posted: 23 Oct 2019 04:18 PM PDT Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge Google employees have accused their employer of creating a surveillance tool disguised as a calendar extension designed to monitor gatherings of more than 100 people, a signal that those employees may be planning protests or discussing union organizing. Google parent company Alphabet "categorically" denies the accusation. The accusation, outlined in a memo obtained by Bloomberg News, claims severe unethical conduct from high-ranking Google employees, who they say allegedly ordered a team to develop a Chrome browser extension that would be installed on all employee machines and used primarily to monitor internal employee activity. Employees are claiming the tool reports anyone who creates a calendar invite and sends it to more than 100... |
Foxconn finally admits its empty Wisconsin ‘innovation centers’ aren’t being developed Posted: 23 Oct 2019 03:33 PM PDT Photo by Joshua Lott for The Verge Electronics manufacturer Foxconn's promised Wisconsin "innovation centers," which are to employ hundreds of people in the state if they ever get built, are officially on hold after spending months empty and unused, as the company focuses on meeting revised deadlines on the LCD factory it promised would now open by next year. The news, reported earlier today by Wisconsin Public Radio, is another inexplicable twist in the nearly two-year train wreck that is Foxconn's US manufacturing plans. The company originally promised five so-called innovation centers throughout the state would that employ as many as 100 to 200 people each in high-skilled jobs, with the Milwaukee center promising as many as 500. Those jobs were to complement the more... |
Tesla’s Smart Summon parking feature has been used over a million times Posted: 23 Oct 2019 02:47 PM PDT Photo by Sean O'Kane / The Verge Smart Summon, the autonomous parking feature rolled out by Tesla in mid-September, has already been used "over one million times," the company said in its quarterly earnings statement Wednesday. The feature enables a Tesla vehicle to leave a parking space and navigate around obstacles to its owner. Tesla owners who purchased the Full Self-Driving option on their car received it as part of the version 10 software update that went out on September 26th. Using just the Tesla app on your smartphone, you can "summon" your car to you from a maximum distance of 200 feet, as long as the car is within your line of sight. There were some hiccups, though, with some users posting videos on Twitter and YouTube of near... |
Trump’s China trade war is killing Roomba sales Posted: 23 Oct 2019 02:45 PM PDT Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge iRobot finds itself in a bind. The Massachusetts-based robotics company that makes the Roomba, among other autonomous cleaning devices, saw its stock plummet by nearly 20 percent today, after reporting third quarter earnings yesterday, as a result of lower sales in August and September. But its sales were only lower because it decided to increase prices in the US, an ill-fated move that's hurt the company domestically. The culprit? President Trump's ongoing trade war with China, which iRobot's chairman and CEO, Colin Angle, cited directly as the cause. "Despite the severity of US tariffs on robotic vacuum cleaners, and the direct and indirect disruptions they are having on US category growth, we remain committed to delivering... |
Congress isn’t buying Mark Zuckerberg’s pitch for Libra Posted: 23 Oct 2019 02:37 PM PDT Photo by Aurora Samperio/NurPhoto via Getty Images Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg sat before dozens of members of Congress on Wednesday, charged with the goal of convincing them that the company's foray into cryptocurrency is a good idea. But nearly every lawmaker who spoke today took Zuckerberg to task over the company's past failures, calling on him and Facebook to make efforts to regain their trust before moving forward with the Libra project. At the top of the House Financial Service Committee's hearing with Zuckerberg, Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) laid out her grievances with Facebook and expressed skepticism over the company's cryptocurrency plans. Whether it was the platform's role in Russian election interference in 2016 or its recent decision not to fact-check political ads,... |
