Migrating eagles racked up a huge cellular bill

Migrating eagles with tracking beacons that send texts reportedly accrued roaming charges so high that scientists had to take out a loan to pay for them, as well as attempt to raise money from a crowdfunding campaign — because some of the birds made unexpected detours (via BBC).

One eagle, Min, was apparently so far off course that its transmitter sent enough texts to eat up the entire tracking budget, according to the BBC. Min was expected to fly to Kazakhstan, where it would have sent a bunch of coordinates over SMS that it collected while out of range of a network. Those texts would have cost of approximately 30 cents each. However, Min apparently flew straight to Iran and the texts were sent from there, where they cost approximately...

Facebook trained AI to fool facial recognition systems, and it works on live video

Facebook remains embroiled in a multibillion-dollar judgement lawsuit over its facial recognition practices, but that hasn't stopped its artificial intelligence research division from developing technology to combat the very misdeeds of which the company is accused. According to VentureBeat, Facebook AI Research (FAIR) has developed a state-of-the-art "de-identification" system that works on video, including even live video. It works by altering key facial features of a video subject in real time using machine learning, to trick a facial recognition system into improperly identifying the subject.

This de-identification technology has existed in the past and there are entire companies, like Israeli AI and privacy firm D-ID, dedicated to...

Microsoft leak reveals Windows 10X will be coming to laptops

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 04:24 PM PDT

Microsoft has accidentally published an internal design document for its upcoming Windows 10X operating system. Spotted by WalkingCat, the document was briefly available online today and provides some more detail about Microsoft's plans with Windows 10X. The software giant originally unveiled Windows 10X as the operating system powering the company's new Surface Neo hardware, but it will also run on similar dual-screen devices.

Microsoft has so far only officially confirmed Windows 10X will be available on foldables and dual-screen devices, with tweaks to both the Start Menu and taskbar, but it's clear the company now has ambitions to bring those changes to traditional clamshell laptop hardware. "For both clamshells and foldables, the...

Donald Trump wants the iPhone home button back

President Donald Trump seems to have recently switched to an iPhone without a home button, and he doesn't seem to like it very much. So much so that he decided to casually subtweet Apple CEO Tim Cook with a bit of light tech commentary.

We can't tell if Trump recently upgraded to the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or one of the iPhone 11 variants. But all the top-of-the-line Apple smartphones since last year have ditched the home button last seen on the iPhone 8 for the edge-to-edge design first introduced with the iPhone X in 2017.

We learned in March 2017 Donald Trump switched from Android to iPhone, but we didn't know w...

Microsoft beats Amazon to win the Pentagon’s $10 billion JEDI cloud contract

The US government has awarded a giant $10 billion cloud contract to Microsoft, the Department of Defense has confirmed. Known as Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI), the contract will provide the Pentagon with cloud services for basic storage and power all the way up to artificial intelligence processing, machine learning, and the ability to process mission-critical workloads.

It's a key contract for Microsoft as the company battles Amazon for cloud dominance, and for a while it was up in the air as to whether Microsoft or Amazon would win this particular one. IBM and Oracle were both eliminated for the bidding back in April, leaving just Microsoft and Amazon as the only companies that could meet the requirements. The contract...

Google’s own code may explain why the Pixel 4’s Smooth Display isn’t always as smooth as you’d like

Google apparently won't let Google Maps, Pokemon Go, Waze, and WeChat use the Pixel 4's "Smooth Display" feature to run at 90Hz, according to an explicit blacklist that XDA Developers' Mishaal Rahman and 9to5Google found in apparent source code for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL.

We haven't yet been able to test ourselves if these apps are unable to run at 90Hz, but Android Police confirmed that Google Maps and Waze only ran at 60Hz on its Pixel 4.

For Google Maps, Pokémon Go, and Waze, it's not too surprising that Google may have locked them to a more standard 60Hz. All of those apps are already big battery drainers, since they simultaneously use your phone's GPS, cellular radio, GPU, and keep the screen on for long periods of time....

Tesla’s new Solar Glass Roof tiles are the first version ready for a wide rollout

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 03:27 PM PDT

Elon Musk has unveiled a redesign of Tesla's Solar Roof tiles, dubbed "Solar Glass Roof." The new roof design will cost around $42,500 for a 2,000-square-foot roof with 10kW of solar capacity before tax credits (or about $21.25 per square foot), according to Tesla's website, though pricing will vary by size and location. The new roof will come with a 25-year warranty, and be offered in a dark tempered glass finish to start, though Musk said Friday he hopes to unveil new designs "every six to nine months."

The new version of the Solar Roof is the third design Tesla has come up with, and the company says it should be cheaper and quicker to install than version two, which is what Tesla was selling before Friday's announcement. With...

Mark Zuckerberg is struggling to explain why Breitbart belongs on Facebook News

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 03:18 PM PDT

On Friday morning, Facebook announced its plan to spend millions of dollars on high-quality journalism, fueling the launch of a new dedicated news tab on its platform. CEO Mark Zuckerberg joined News Corp CEO Robert Thomson for an interview soon after, and Thomson hammered home the need for objective journalism in the age of social media, waxing nostalgic about the importance of rigorous fact-checking in his early career.

An hour later, however, Zuckerberg struggled to explain how Facebook's most controversial new partner fits into its mission.

Facebook News is partnering with a variety of regional newspapers and some major national partners, including USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. But as The New York Times and Nieman Lab...

Planting trees to take on climate change isn’t as easy as YouTubers might think

Posted: 25 Oct 2019 01:18 PM PDT

YouTubers are on a mission to plant 20 million trees. Hundreds of YouTubers are calling on their audiences today to donate money to the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, with every dollar raised turning into a tree seedling in the ground. "We want to show that YouTube isn't just a drama fest, that we actually have real influence and can make real change," Jimmy Donaldson, who goes by MrBeast on YouTube and started the campaign dubbed #TeamTrees, said in a private video seen by The Verge.

For any big tree-planting scheme, whether those seedlings can live to change the world is a little more complicated. Planting trees can have huge benefits for the ecosystem and the planet, reviving downed forests and helping to fight climate change by...
