Netflix is branching out beyond scripted video and nonfiction podcasts to create fictional podcasts. The company said today it's planning to release a show called The Only Podcast Left as a fictional companion to its new apocalyptic zombie show Daybreak. The podcast takes place in Daybreak's universe and tells the story of a group of teens who make a podcast during the apocalypse. It'll exclusively be available through Spotify until December 12th, which is when it'll be released on other platforms.

Netflix already produces companion podcasts for some of its content, including a behind-the-scenes show about Stranger Things, and another called You Can't Make This Up about how Netflix filmmakers create their true crime dramas. Other video...

Trump abandons plan to freeze fuel efficiency standards of cars

The White House appears to be abandoning its plan to freeze the fuel efficiency standards of cars at 2020 levels, reversing a cornerstone policy of Trump's campaign, reports The Wall Street Journal. The administration is now considering a 1.5 percent annual increase instead.

The move could leave General Motors, Toyota and Fiat Chrysler in a lurch. The companies sided with the president in a legal battle over whether California could set its own fuel economy standards. From the outside, it seemed they capitulated to his demands, rather than the overwhelming evidence that vehicle emissions need to be cut in order to protect against climate change. Now, they may have squandered a lot of goodwill and damaged their reputations without getting...

Huawei’s next tablet might look like an iPad Pro

Huawei is apparently working on a new tablet, and it looks pretty darn similar to an iPad Pro, according to leaked renders posted by 91Mobiles (via Android Central). The biggest difference seems to be its cameras — Huawei's tablet appears to have a dual-lens back camera and a hole punch display housing a front-facing camera. It's actually the second Chinese-made gadget we've covered today that cribs heavily from Apple — Xiaomi's new smartwatch has a strong resemblance to an Apple Watch.

Huawei's new tablet might even adopt Apple's "Pro" nomenclature — serial leaker Evan Blass said it will be called the Huawei MatePad Pro.

Motorola’s folding-screen RAZR revealed in 10 leaked images

Evan Blass (Twitter)

If you're filled with nostalgia for a new Motorola RAZR — one with a folding screen — you won't need to wait any longer to see what the company's been cooking.

Ahead of the handset's official unveiling next month, a flurry of leaked images from the reliable Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter) now show the folding handset from practically every angle — and it looks a lot like the classic RAZR V3 from 2004. Motorola has already teased a new hinge for this foldable RAZR, and this leaked image shows the displays will flip into place.

Here's a gallery of all the images Blass has uncovered today — which seem to reveal a second screen on the flip-up lid of the phone, right next to the primary camera, to help you take quality selfies. It appears...

Twitter’s political ad ban raises one big issue: what exactly is an ‘issue’?

Twitter is finally doing something popular: banning political ads. Yesterday, CEO Jack Dorsey announced that his company will no longer allow sponsored tweets promoting political campaigns. It will also prohibit the much broader category of "issues" ads, with a few exceptions. "This isn't about free expression. This is about paying for reach," said Dorsey. "Paying to increase the reach of political speech has significant ramifications that today's democratic infrastructure may not be prepared to handle."

The decision was widely supported, according to a survey from consumer polling group CivicScience. But it also sparked immediate debate, confusion, and uncertainty — because Twitter is trying to draw hard policy lines around the nebulous...

Xiaomi mimics the Apple Watch with its first smartwatch

In the past, Xiaomi's products have looked a lot like Apple versions, and Xiaomi's first smartwatch, which will launch on November 5th, appears to be no exception. From the images and video teasers Xiaomi released through Weibo earlier this week, it bears a striking resemblance to the Apple Watch (via XDA Developers).

The watch has an almost-identical rectangular touchscreen face with rounded corners and a lookalike rotating ridged crown button for scrolling, which is also located above a similar-looking pill-shaped button on the right side of the watch. Those are all right where you'd find them on an Apple Watch. Although the Xiaomi watch's face is a little thicker and less...

Do yourself a favor and listen to RL Grime’s annual Halloween mix

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:58 PM PDT

My truth: I don't like Halloween. I think it's fun, sure, and I do love any excuse to party or eat candy, but there's something about the ritual of it that gets to me — something about pretending to be someone or something else, when it's so hard even to just be yourself. Or maybe it's that Halloween changes: eventually you stop eating your neighbors' candy and start giving it out yourself. Or the fact that, in New York City at least, it's one of the messier weekends of the year. I think I might just be a curmudgeon. But I enjoy things! I promise. Actually, now that I think of it, here's one.

For the better part of a decade, one of my favorite internet Halloween traditions has been waiting for trap producer Henry Steinway — better known...

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is perfectly silly slapstick comedy

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:09 AM PDT

Most video game protagonists walk with purpose. Nathan Drake has a particular swagger as he strolls through ancient tombs, while Leon Kennedy holds himself with the confidence of a trained professional amid the horrors of a zombie infestation. Luigi isn't like that. Mario's bumbling brother is always slightly on edge, and that has never been more apparent than in Luigi's Mansion 3, which launches today, October 31st, on the Nintendo Switch. Luigi shivers as he walks down dimly lit hallways and opens doors with no small amount of trepidation. When he runs, he moves so fast that his head trails behind, like in a Looney Tunes cartoon. He is not remotely brave — and that's what makes the game so hilarious.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is part of a rare...

Facebook’s political ad ban created a disaster in Washington state

Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:30 AM PDT

On Wednesday, Twitter announced that it will ban all forms of political advertising starting in November, opening up challenging questions about what role social media platforms should play in the 2020 elections. Announced just hours before Facebook's quarterly earnings call, Twitter's policy was based on the belief that "political message reach should be earned, not bought," CEO Jack Dorsey explained.

It's been a controversial decision — not least with the 2020 presidential frontrunners — but after Facebook's ongoing fact-checking policy disaster, it's an appealing option. Would we be better off if platforms just banned political ads entirely?

There's one place in...
