Here’s why Netflix is ditching old Roku devices: DRM

Last week, Netflix announced that it was ending support for older devices from Samsung, Roku, and Vizio after December 1st, but it wasn't clear exactly why those devices were losing support, besides the fact that they were old. And a Netflix support doc isn't helpful, saying that the problem is due to "technical limitations." But Netflix has shared a little more detail about those technical limitations on older Roku devices with Gizmodo, and it turns out the answer is quite simple: DRM.

Here's what's going on: Netflix has used Microsoft's PlayReady DRM since 2010 so that it could more easily bring its streaming service to the loads of TVs, devices, and set top boxes you can find it on today while satisfying its content providers that...

Disney+ launch lineup: Every movie and TV show available to stream in the US on day one

Disney's foray into an online streaming subscription service, Disney+, is set to launch globally on November 12th, and we've updated this post with the company's full launch lineup ahead of its imminent debut — including some of the missing Marvel movies and animated series, along with the first three Home Alone movies.

The company initially used a massive Twitter thread — more than 300 tweets in total — to make the announcement. The thread included obvious titles like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Frozen, alongside older titles like Three Men and a Baby, Three Musketeers, Swiss Family Robinson, and Fantasia. Disney also used the thread to name some popular TV series that will be available on day one, including Lizzie McGuire, Recess,...

This new HyperJuice 100W GaN charger could be the charger of your dreams

Gallium nitride chargers have been getting better fast since they first came out earlier this year — we started with 30W and 45W chargers, then small 61W bricks, then a 60W charger with two USB-C ports, and there was a small 65W charger with two USB-C ports and a USB-A port in September. But now we might have a new wall charging king, as Hyper launched a Kickstarter for the HyperJuice 100W GaN charger — which delivers the maximum amount of power that USB-C can muster under the current standard, in a package that's about the size of a deck of cards.

Here it is, demonstrating a grand total of two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports:

It also has built-in prongs on the back that you flip out so you can plug it into an outlet. But...

Apple TV Plus exec leaves two weeks after streaming service debuts to mediocre reviews

To say that Apple TV Plus' first slate of programming debuted to less than stellar reviews would be an understatement. Now, a top TV executive in charge of Apple's programming has left the company less than two weeks after the service's debut.

Kim Rozenfeld is leaving his position as head of current scripted programming, documentary, and unscripted content, according to The Hollywood Reporter. There aren't any additional details on Rozenfeld's departure, but it is remarkable. Rozenfeld has signed a first-look deal with Apple, which suggests an amicable split. He was one of the first people that Apple TV Plus chiefs Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht hired when they were building the team. Prior to Apple, he was a longstanding executive at...

Facebook will now let you turn off notification dots in its mobile app

Facebook is making a wonderful change to its mobile app to ease the pain on our notification-riddled brains: the company is rolling out the ability to turn off notification dots for some icons on the shortcuts bar and will even let you remove some of those shortcuts entirely. The new feature was reported on by TechCrunch.

I tested it on iOS, and hiding notification dots is pretty easy to do. Just tap and hold on an icon on the shortcuts bar, and a menu will pop up that gives you the choice to remove that icon from the bar or turn off the attention-grabbing red dots for it:

You can also manage what's on your shortcut bar by tapping the hamburger menu icon > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Shortcuts. I was able to hide the...

This wild NES mouse will haunt your dreams

Posted: 11 Nov 2019 02:06 PM PST

Nintendo's original Entertainment System (NES) is now 34 years old. A millennial, in other words. And since the console debuted in North America in the fall of 1985, its design — the familiar boxy shape; that matte gray, black, and red — has been an inspiration to nerds everywhere. The latest entry into this venerable canon, which includes everything from (fly as hell) Jordans to shelving, is the 8BitDo N30: a 2.4GHz wireless mouse made by the mad scientists over at 8BitDo. You can order one right now for $24.99.

8BitDo is probably best known for its high-end controllers and gaming peripherals. A mouse isn't totally out of their wheelhouse, though it is a little odd. I mean, look at it.

The design is the brainchild of...

Microsoft vows to ‘honor’ California’s sweeping privacy law across entire US

On Monday, Microsoft announced that it would honor the "core rights" provided to Californians through the state's landmark data privacy law and expand that coverage across the entire United States.

In a Monday blog post, Julie Brill, Microsoft's chief privacy officer, said that the company will extend the main principles of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) across the US just as it did with Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) last year. The law goes into effect in California on January 1st, 2020.

CCPA, which was approved in June 2018, is one of the fiercest and most sweeping data privacy regulations in the US. It's somewhat similar to GDPR. Under CCPA, companies must disclose to users what personal data of theirs...

Tech’s transportation companies keep bending the knee to Saudi Arabia

In an interview with Axios that aired November 10th, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called the murder of the journalist and US resident Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi Arabia "a serious mistake" — before quickly backtracking and admitting that it was his comments, and not Khashoggi's murder, that were the actual mistake. But Khosrowshahi's comments were not made in isolation. There is a pattern emerging of transportation companies with deep financial ties to Saudi Arabia being friendly to the regime in the face of international outcry.

It's bad enough right now for huge companies doing business in countries with oppressive regimes, as we've seen recently with China's strong-arming of the NBA and Blizzard. But Saudi Arabia's practice of directly...

Disney+ gets last-minute update, will have most Marvel movies at launch

Posted: 11 Nov 2019 12:35 PM PST

Captain America: Civil War

Disney has apparently worked out multiple deals to get much of the MCU back at launch.

A new Twitter thread from the official Disney+ account lists a number of new Marvel titles that will be available to stream at launch. It explains why there are now several more Marvel titles available on Disney+ than what the company announced less than one month ago. On October 14th, Disney announced that Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and Captain Marvel would be available on Disney+ in the US at launch.

Then, last week, Disney announced Avengers: Endgame would be available on Disney+ one month earlier than expected, moving up from December 11th to November 12th. Now, the thread confirms that Iron Man 2,...

Apple pulls app that let you stalk people you follow on Instagram

Posted: 11 Nov 2019 12:09 PM PST

In October, Instagram phased out the "Following" tab. That's because it shared a lot of information about what your friends and the people you follow were doing on the social network — maybe too much — and Instagram said some people were surprised their activity was showing up there. And now, the company is apparently keeping others from re-creating that idea: Apple has removed Like Patrol from the App Store, according to CNET.

At the end of October, Instagram sent a cease-and-desist letter to Like Patrol, an app described by its maker as the Following tab "on steroids," and on Saturday, Apple reportedly removed it from its iOS marketplace entirely.

Like Patrol went beyond the Following tab in some...
