Valve announces Half-Life: Alyx, its first flagship VR game Posted: 18 Nov 2019 03:27 PM PST Two years and nine months after announcing it would build three (3) full-length VR games — a number that Valve Software has historically never been able to count to before, and one of the most exciting announcements in VR's short history so far — the company has today announced Half-Life: Alyx, the first new game in the acclaimed Half-Life series in well over a decade.
We don't currently have any details beyond the tweet from Valve above, which appears to be the first tweet from a new, Twitter-verified Valve Software account... |
Floods and firestorms can spread toxins from Superfund sites Posted: 18 Nov 2019 03:18 PM PST Photo DigitalGlobe via Getty Images via Getty Images Wildfires and flooding exacerbated by climate change threaten to unleash contaminants from some of the most polluted sites across the United States, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) warned in a report publicly released Monday. According to the watchdog agency, about 60 percent of these sites are vulnerable to extreme weather events made worse by a changing climate. Superfund sites are locations so contaminated that they've been placed on a National Priorities List by the Environmental Protection Agency. Of 1,571 nonfederal Superfund sites spread across the country that the GAO examined, 945 are vulnerable to some of the most extreme effects of climate change. The GAO plotted these 945 climate-vulnerable locations on an i... |
NASA partners with SpaceX, Blue Origin, and more to send large payloads to the Moon Posted: 18 Nov 2019 03:07 PM PST In its ongoing effort to send cargo — and eventually people — to the lunar surface, NASA announced five new partnerships with commercial space companies that have designed robotic landers that can take large payloads to the Moon. The additions include some well-known industry heavyweights, such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Sierra Nevada Corporation, which have already partnered with NASA for other projects. The newcomers will join an already formed pool of nine companies that are part of NASA's fledgling CLPS program, which stands for Commercial Lunar Payload Services. The goal is to have multiple different capabilities for transporting scientific instruments and cargo to the Moon, as NASA attempts to send people back to the lunar surface... |
Bot campaign on Twitter fuels confusion about Bolivian unrest Posted: 18 Nov 2019 03:03 PM PST Photo by Marcelo Perez Del Carpio / Anadolu Agency via Getty Images Since last week, a network of Twitter bot accounts has been spreading confusion about the events surrounding Bolivian President Evo Morales' abrupt resignation. The messages, which appear in English and Spanish, all carry the exact same text, beginning with the words, "Friends from everywhere, in Bolivia there was no coup." Initial iterations of the tweet seem to have been written by an authentic critic of Morales, but the sentiment was co-opted and amplified by what experts say is a network of automated Twitter accounts. Although Twitter has removed many of the tweets, there are 4,320 still on the network as of press time. The news comes as legitimate confusion about the events surrounding Morales' resignation continues to circulate... |
Amazon Music launches free, ad-sponsored tier on iOS, Android, and Fire TV Posted: 18 Nov 2019 03:00 PM PST Image: Amazon Earlier this year, Amazon began offering a free, ad-sponsored music streaming tier on Echo speakers and other Alexa devices. Offering access to "top playlists and stations," this free experience is different than the selection of on-demand music that you get with an Amazon Prime membership. And Amazon Music Unlimited (or HD) subscribers don't need to worry about ads. Today, the company is rolling out the free Amazon Music streaming tier to customers on iPhone, iPad, Android, and Amazon's own Fire TV products. "Music fans will be able to play thousands of stations based on any song, artist, era, and genre; hear top global playlists; and the best in holiday tunes," the company wrote in a blog post. You can also access the ad-sponsored... |
The weakest part of Ford’s Mustang Mach-E reveal was the software Posted: 18 Nov 2019 02:50 PM PST Photo by Sean O'Kane / The Verge Ford's newly revealed electric Mustang SUV, the Mach-E, is quickly becoming one of the more buzzed-about car reveals of the last few years. But while the new EV looked competent at its LA Auto Show debut, the company pretty much whiffed on one really important part of the Mustang Mach-E: the software. The performance and practicality of the Mustang Mach-E will be big determinants of its success, but the new Sync 4 software that will power the giant 15.5-inch touchscreen at the center of the dashboard will have a major impact on day-to-day life inside this car. That's why it was disappointing that Ford didn't offer much of a chance to interact with the software, and in some cases was actively discouraging people from trying to use it. |
iFixit’s MacBook Pro 16-inch teardown shows how Apple fit in that bigger battery Posted: 18 Nov 2019 02:21 PM PST Photo: iFixit While it's good news that the new 16-inch MacBook Pro has a solid, comfortable, and well-designed keyboard, there are other interesting changes to the design as well, as detailed by iFixit's recent teardown. These alterations include a redesigned cooling system and a bigger battery — which explains why this laptop is 0.7mm thicker than its predecessor. Comparing the new MacBook Pro to the 15-inch model, iFixit noticed that the laptop's exhaust holes are larger; the teardown also reveals fans with larger blades which, according to the article, will be able to push 28 percent more air through the system's innards. And apparently those fans are needed for the system's 99.8 Wh battery which, says iFixit,... |
Here’s what the PlayStation 5’s controller might look like Posted: 18 Nov 2019 02:07 PM PST We already know that the PlayStation 5 is coming next year, and that its controller will have a few new tricks up its sleeve (more on those later). And now, we might have an idea of what that new controller could look like, based on images from a patent filed in Japan. At first glance, the controller looks a lot like a DualShock 4 — which isn't too surprising. In a hands-on, Wired described a prototype of the PS5's controller as looking "an awful lot like the PS4's DualShock 4." And you can see a lot of elements carried over from the DualShock 4: a similar-looking D-pad, similar button placement, and what appears to be the touch bar. I also noticed that the grips seem to... |
Uncharted creator Amy Hennig announces studio focused on ‘emerging streaming platforms’ Posted: 18 Nov 2019 02:00 PM PST Photo by Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for BAFTA LA One of the most notable writers in video games has a new home. Today, Skydance Media announced a new internal studio that will be helmed by Amy Hennig, best known for her work on the Uncharted series. Hennig will be joined by veteran EA producer Julian Beak, and the pair is building a new team in San Francisco with the goal of creating narrative-focused games on "emerging streaming platforms." Skydance, which is best known for its work on films like Annihilation and, most recently, Gemini Man, says that the new team will be tasked with shaping "the future of interactive media." While no games have been announced, here's a high-level description of what Hennig will be working on:

Apple is hosting a surprise December 2nd event ‘honoring’ apps and games Posted: 18 Nov 2019 01:49 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple will be hosting a special event on December 2nd that will honor the company's "favorite apps and games of 2019." The event comes as a surprise; Apple has handed out awards for its apps of the year in the past but not with a press event.
Apple isn't expected to announce new products, according to CNBC. The event is not currently listed on Apple's event website. Apple has been pushing further into curation with the surprisingly good Apple Arcade and not-as-good (yet) Apple TV Plus, and hosting its own app awards show is another step down that path. Apple was previously known for determining what many of... |
