Google is open sourcing Cardboard now that the Daydream is dead Posted: 06 Nov 2019 05:12 PM PST In October, Google officially discontinued its Daydream View VR headset — and the company took another step away from its initial leadership position in phone-based VR today by announcing that it's open sourcing the software of Cardboard, its "no-frills" VR headset. It had already "open-sourced" the actual Cardboard VR viewer by posting its technical specifications for anyone to download, so it is nice to see Google open up the software as well. Google says it's shipped "more than 15 million [Cardboard] units worldwide," but that it's seen usage of Cardboard "decline over time." That doesn't surprise me, sadly — I just don't think there were many compelling uses for Cardboard, beyond its initial novelty. I remember playing with a free... |
AT&T just redefined the word ‘bonus’ as a $10 price hike for data you didn’t ask for Posted: 06 Nov 2019 05:01 PM PST AT&T has a gift for wireless subscribers on many of its old Mobile Share Value data plans: it's giving them an extra 15GB of "bonus" data — and it's making them pay an extra $10 a month for that "bonus." It's almost like the company is forcing people to move to a more expensive plan, only AT&T figured out a way to make that not technically true. Instead, it's worded in a way that suggests the company is providing you with a SURPRISE BENEFIT that costs you money! It is quite literally an offer you can't refuse. One email subject line provided to The Verge by a tipster: "We've added 15GB of data to your plan and increased your monthly rate by $10." |

The show is based on the web series' popular Twitch show, and Amazon is bringing it to Prime Video as an exclusive. On top of that, Critical Role has also signed a first-look deal to produce additional content exclusively for Amazon Prime. Critical Role, which features voice actors playing Dungeons and Dragons, has streamed on Amazon-owned Twitch since 2015. "Our crazy little show was born on Twitch and we're absolutely thrilled at the opportunity to continue to grow and develop deeper roots within the Amazon ecosphere," Critical Role said in a Kickstarter update. |
Executives at Google are under investigation by the board for how they handled sexual harassment Posted: 06 Nov 2019 03:18 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Alphabet's board has opened an internal investigation into how the company handles claims of sexual harassment and misconduct, forming both an independent subcommittee that will investigate as well as hiring an external law firm, according to a report from CNBC. The investigation comes after a series of reports over the past year around sexual harassment by high-level Google and Alphabet executives, including:

Google teams up with security companies to catch bad apps before they hit the Play Store Posted: 06 Nov 2019 03:05 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Google announced today that it's teaming up with three security companies to help identify malicious apps before they're published on the Play Store and can potentially do harm to Android users. The company is calling this partnership the App Defense Alliance. Android is on over 2.5 billion devices, according to Google, and the company says that makes the platform "an attractive target" for abuse. That abuse can take the form of hidden malware or secret code designed to spy and siphon away sensitive user data. This seems to be particularly true of the Play Store — over the past year or so, Google has had to take action against multiple developers for releasing apps on the Play Store using scammy ad practices. By forming the App Defense... |
Bill Gates thinks Windows Mobile would have beaten Android without Microsoft’s antitrust woes Posted: 06 Nov 2019 02:58 PM PST Photo by David McNew/Getty Images Bill Gates has revealed that he thinks everyone would be using Windows Mobile right now if Microsoft hadn't have been caught up in a US Justice Department antitrust investigation. Speaking at The New York Times' DealBook Conference earlier today, Gates revealed his thoughts on Microsoft's mobile mistakes. "There's no doubt that the antitrust lawsuit was bad for Microsoft, and we would have been more focused on creating the phone operating system and so instead of using Android today you would be using Windows Mobile," claimed Gates. "If it hadn't been for the antitrust case... we were so close, I was just too distracted. I screwed that up because of the distraction." |

Uber is being sued by NYC drivers for allegedly undercutting their earnings Posted: 06 Nov 2019 02:27 PM PST Photo credit should read MARK RALSTON/AFP via Getty Images Uber drivers in New York City are suing the company for allegedly failing to repay taxes it deducted from their earnings. The suit was filed by the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, which is a vocal critic of Uber and the ride-hail industry. The plaintiffs seek to represent a class of 96,000-plus Uber drivers in New York City who worked for the company from 2013-2017 and who did not opt out of arbitration. The lawsuit claims Uber deducted sales tax and the Black Car Fund surcharge from drivers during that time. The lawsuit is asking for all of that money back. "Uber bosses are raking in millions while drivers struggle to feed their families," said Bhairavi Desai, executive director of the Taxi Workers Alliance, in a statement. "Uber's... |
Two former Twitter employees charged with spying for Saudi Arabia Posted: 06 Nov 2019 02:23 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Two former Twitter employees have been charged with spying on user accounts on behalf of the Saudi Arabian government, according to The Washington Post. The Justice Department announced the charges today after one of the former employees was reportedly arrested. That suspect, Ahmad Abouammo, was charged with spying on three Twitter accounts for the government, according to the Post. Another former employee was charged with accessing data on more than 6,000 Twitter accounts, including one tied to a confidant of murdered journalist and critic of the Saudi government, Jamal Khashoggi. A third man, who prosecutors said acted as an intermediary between the employees and the Saudi government,... |
SoftBank’s chairman admits he blew it with WeWork after disastrous earnings Posted: 06 Nov 2019 02:05 PM PST An actual slide from SoftBank's earnings presentation. | Image: SoftBank SoftBank leader Masayoshi Son admitted that it was a mistake to have invested in WeWork, the beleaguered office space rental company that's been in chaos ever since an attempt to go public revealed systemic mismanagement and ludicrous behavior by its founder and CEO. During an earnings conference, Son said that WeWork's troubles resulted in "quite a large impact" on SoftBank and its Vision Fund. "My judgement in investment was not right in many ways," Son said, according to SoftBank's translator, adding that he regretted the decision. The remarks followed SoftBank posting a $6.5 billion loss during its second quarter, the company's biggest ever quarterly loss a... |
