Instagram will test hiding likes in the US as soon as next week Posted: 08 Nov 2019 04:43 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Instagram has been running tests where it hides like counts on posts in seven different countries around the world, and very soon, it will start testing hiding them for some US users as well. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri made the announcement today at the WIRED25 conference. In tests that have rolled out so far, likes are hidden from public posts in the Feed, on the web, and in profiles. However, you should still be able to see how many likes a post gets — it's only other people that won't be able to.

WeWork is divesting itself from its ‘non-core businesses,’ including a wave pool company Posted: 08 Nov 2019 03:37 PM PST Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Earlier this week, SoftBank's Masayoshi Son said that it was a mistake to have invested in WeWork, and shared a "simple" three step plan to turn around the company, which included dumping side businesses that aren't profitable. Well, it seems like that might be happening soon, as WeWork has published a "90-day game plan" that divests itself of those non-core businesses and includes internal layoffs, as first reported by CNBC. Here are the businesses that WeWork says it is going to get rid of. One is a company that makes wave pools.

Behringer’s newest synth is a $150 clone of the classic Roland TB-303 Posted: 08 Nov 2019 03:03 PM PST Image: Behringer Behringer has announced its newest synth, the TD-3, an analog bass line synthesizer that's essentially a clone of Roland's TB-303 from 1982. Although the company doesn't directly mention the TB-303, it gives a heavy wink by saying the TD-3 features "authentic reproduction of original circuitry with matched transistors" and a "pure analog signal path based on lcegendary VCO, VCF and VCA designs." The all-analog instrument gives you a sawtooth and square waveform VCO, an arpeggiator, a 4-pole low-pass resonant filter, distortion circuity, and a 16-step sequencer with 7 tracks, each with 250 user patterns. There's also the addition of a 16-voice poly chain, which lets you combine multiple synthesizers for up to 16 voice polyphony. So, it's... |
Facebook and YouTube ban naming alleged Trump impeachment whistleblower Posted: 08 Nov 2019 02:39 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Facebook and YouTube are removing content that potentially names the anonymous whistleblower who sparked a presidential impeachment inquiry, with Facebook saying it violates rules against "coordinating harm" on the platform. The decision follows Facebook's earlier choice to remove ads featuring the name — which Republican political figures, including Donald Trump, Jr., have publicized on Twitter. BuzzFeed reported attempts to spread the alleged whistleblower's name earlier this week, confirming that Facebook would remove ads targeting them. BuzzFeed noted that the person, a former Obama administration staffer and current CIA officer, has been a target for conservative commentators since 2017. But recent articles by the conservative sites... |
Best Buy’s early Black Friday deals have already started, and they’re great Posted: 08 Nov 2019 02:23 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Best Buy has shared its Black Friday ad, and one of the big surprises was that some of its best deals are already happening. If you're a My Best Buy member (Best Buy's free membership service), you can save a lot of money today on the new seventh-generation iPad. You can also save on various sizes and storage configurations of the 2018 iPad Pro. But you don't have to be a My Best Buy member to take advantage of some big sales that we didn't think we'd see until later in the month, like the steeply discounted Microsoft Surface Pro 7 with a Type Cover included at no extra charge. This bodes well if you don't want to wait, but perhaps it bodes even better for those who want to wait since there may be even better deals coming in just a few... |
SMS provider said 168,000 Valentine’s texts were delayed — now it says the number is higher Posted: 08 Nov 2019 02:09 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The company at fault for the tens of thousands of delayed text messages that were sent out early Thursday morning says that more messages were delayed than it originally believed. Syniverse, the company at fault, originally stated that 168,149 messages were delayed. It now says that the number was based on "preliminary data" and that further review shows the message total "is higher than initially reported." Syniverse didn't indicate how much higher the number might be or whether it would release final numbers once it had figured out the total. It's worth remembering that the total number of people affected is at least double the number of delayed messages: there's the sender, whose message was received months later at an odd hour of the... |
WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton still thinks you should delete Facebook Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:28 PM PST Photo by Phillip Faraone/Getty Images for WIRED WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton is still behind the idea of deleting Facebook, telling a crowd at Wired's 25th anniversary summit that while people have to make their own decisions about the social network, he stands by his decision to leave. "If you want to be on Facebook and you want to have ads thrust in front of you, go to town," he added. Acton's original tweet came at the height of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, as the #DeleteFacebook movement swept the nation. The company was reeling from revelations regarding the political consulting firm's mishandling of user data with the specific intent of influencing the 2016 election, when Acton jumped into the fray. At the time, Acton had been away from Facebook for more than a year,... |
Roku’s new free app lets you control your viewing with your Apple Watch Posted: 08 Nov 2019 12:56 PM PST Photo courtesy Roku If you're constantly misplacing your Roku remote, you now have an alternative way to control your movies — right from your wrist. According to the Roku blog, there is now a free app available for the Apple Watch. The Roku app looks, and works, very much like the iPhone and Android apps. It allows you to launch various Roku-based channels (listed in the order of most recently launched), control the cursor on your TV interface, play and pause your videos — in other words, work as an efficient remote control. The new app even allows for voice control, so you can launch channels or find programs without having to tap your screen (as long as you are using an Apple Watch Series 1 through 5 — it apparently doesn't work with the first-generation... |
Microsoft’s Surface Pro X now steers you away from buying apps that don’t work Posted: 08 Nov 2019 12:55 PM PST Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verg The Surface Pro X sure looks nice, but a lot of currently available apps on the Microsoft Store don't work with its custom SQ1 64-bit ARM processor — and weirdly, my colleague Dieter Bohn found that the Microsoft Store won't stop you from buying apps that don't work. So, in theory, you could pay for an app and download it, only to find it's incompatible with your shiny new computer. Frustrating, to say the least. Microsoft promised it would fix that issue, and it has — sort of — with an update to the Microsoft Store app, according to Windows Central. If you're using the updated app on Windows 10 with an ARM device, it will now apparently hide some incompatible apps and games from browsing or search if they won't work on your computer. H... |
