The Pirate Bay seems to be testing a streaming option again Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:59 PM PST Torrent site The Pirate Bay has long been infamous for allowing people to download pirated movies and TV shows. But now, it looks like it's giving users a new option: streaming. For certain titles, a green play button appears next to the download buttons, which gives the option to "Play now using Baystream". BayStream, according to TorrentFreak, allows you to stream videos in your browser, although right now, it's not clear who runs BayStream, and what their connection is to The Pirate Bay. The streaming feature also doesn't appear to be fully functional yet. This isn't the first time The Pirate Bay has tried to enter the world of streaming. In 2016, the torrent site enabled Torrents Time, a plug-in that similarly allowed... |
Apple’s most expensive Pro Display XDR requires a special, Apple-made cloth to clean it Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:56 PM PST Image: Apple Apple's newest top-of-the-line display, the Pro Display XDR, is out today. And it doesn't come cheap, starting at $4,999, with a matte "nano texture" upgrade for a mere $1,000. If you buy that nano texture upgrade, though, and you ever allow a speck of dust to grace it, don't you dare think about cleaning it with some water and a microfiber cloth. Instead, an Apple support document says you should only clean that nano-texture glass with a special "dry polishing cloth" that comes with the display, and nothing else (via MacRumors). Apple hasn't said why nano-texture Pro Display XDR owners must use its specific cloth over another screen cleaner (we've asked), but it's likely due to how the display is made. "Nano-texture" glass is Apple's... |
NIO lays off 141 employees in Silicon Valley following Intel deal Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:41 PM PST Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Chinese EV startup NIO has laid off another 141 employees at its North American headquarters in San Jose, according to a new filing with the Employment Development Department of California. It's the third round of cuts NIO has made to its US workforce this year, which has been primarily focused on R&D and engineering. The Tencent-backed startup laid off 70 employees and closed an office in San Francisco in May, and then eliminated another 62 jobs in September. NIO began the year with 640 employees in the US, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. NIO has folded the vehicle engineering and electric powertrain divisions that it operated in the San Jose office, but the bulk of the layoffs were made to the... |
The Justice Department will reportedly investigate Google’s Fitbit acquisition Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:55 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The US Department of Justice will reportedly review Google's November acquisition of wearables company Fitbit, potentially probing concerns about the detailed user data that Fitbit would give Google. The New York Post reports that the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission — either of which could have investigated the merger — both had concerns about the merger. But the Justice Department already opened a larger antitrust investigation into Google, demanding documents from the company in September. The agency has also announced a wide-ranging probe of large technology companies, focusing on "search, social media, and some retail services." The FTC was given authority to investigate Facebook and Amazon. |
Logitech made a bespoke $200 magnetic 4K webcam for Apple’s Pro Display XDR Posted: 10 Dec 2019 12:52 PM PST Apple's new $4,999 Pro Display XDR has a lot of features and high-end specs, but one thing it doesn't have is an integrated webcam for video calls. Fortunately, Logitech is here to fill in the gap on the spec sheet with its new 4K Pro Magnetic Webcam, a $199.99 accessory specifically designed to work with Apple's new display. At $199.99, it's by no means the cheapest webcam solution out there, but Apple's Pro Display XDR is no stranger to pricey accessories — like its infamous $999 stand. The 4K Pro Magnetic Webcam attaches magnetically to the display with a stand designed to perfectly fit the screen. Logitech says that the magnet is strong enough that it'll stay attached even when rotated sideways into portrait mode. It can even... |
Genetic database that identified Golden State Killer acquired by crime scene DNA company Posted: 10 Dec 2019 12:17 PM PST Photo by Roland Weihrauch/picture alliance via Getty Images The crime scene DNA sequencing company Verogen announced yesterday that they've acquired the genomics database and website GEDmatch. The acquisition makes the relationship between the company and law enforcement explicit, but raises uncomfortable questions for users and experts about data privacy and the future direction of the platform. GEDmatch was primarily used by genealogists until 2018, when police, the FBI, and a forensic genealogist identified the suspected Golden State Killer by tying crime scene DNA to relatives who had uploaded their genetic information to the site. Since then, the platform has helped identify around 70 people accused of violent crimes. In response to privacy concerns, the company changed its terms and... |
Yahoo is giving users more time to download Groups data before it’s gone forever Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:48 AM PST Image: Yahoo In October, Yahoo announced that it would be deleting all content posted on Yahoo Groups on December 14th.
