Ghost of Tsushima gets new trailer, summer 2020 release date

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 08:05 PM PST

Ghost of Tsushima

Sit back and enjoy a nice look at one of the most anticipated games for the PS4. At The Game Awards tonight, developer Sucker Punch revealed the latest trailer for its PS4 exclusive Ghost of Tsushima, an action-adventure game that combines sword fighting and stealth in a world inspired by feudal Japan. Clocking in at four minutes, the trailer is easily the best look at the game to date, mixing together both gameplay and cinematic footage.

Ghost of Tsushima was first announced back in 2017, and we've heard little about it since then, aside from a slick gameplay trailer at E3 a year later. It's a big departure for Sucker Punch, a studio best-known for the Sly Cooper series and the superhero-inspired Infamous games. It's launching next...

Cyberpunk 2077 CD Projekt Red

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated games of 2020, and at The Game Awards, CD Projekt Red revealed more details about another important area of the game: the soundtrack, which will be drawing on a variety of popular punk, electronic, rap, hip-hop, and alternative artists to set the mood.

The trailer reveals a list of artists who'll be contributing music to Cyperpunk 2077's soundtrack, including:

  • Run the Jewels
  • Refused
  • Grimes
  • A$AP Rocky
  • Gazelle Twin
  • Ilan Rubin
  • Richard Devine
  • Nina Kraviz
  • Deadly Hunta
  • Rat Boy
  • Tina Guo

A varied soundtrack is important for a game like Cyberpunk 2077, which looks to put a lot of effort into the world-building around Night City. It's also key to keeping players entertained during downtime — think...

Ruined King is the first indie League of Legends spinoff

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 07:05 PM PST

Tonight at The Game Awards, Riot revealed the first indie games it will be publishing as part of its newly-unveiled Riot Forge label. It's called Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, and it's being developed by Airship Syndicate for console and PC. You can check out the first trailer above.

Riot Forge was announced a week ago as a way for Riot to expand the League of Legends universe with smaller, linear games. The idea is that, while Riot focuses on the big, ongoing titles like the core League of Legends, indie studio will craft more narratively driven experiences within the same fictional world. "Riot doesn't have a ton of traditional experience making completable games, so we're working with studios who do have that experience and...

Yes, you can use the new Xbox Series X horizontally

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:51 PM PST

The Xbox Series X is Microsoft's newly revealed next-gen console with a unique, PC-inspired vertical design that has already had many questioning how on earth they're going to fit it into their TV stand. But don't worry: according to Xbox head Phil Spencer, Microsoft "designed Xbox Series X to support both vertical and horizontal orientation."

Based on the orientation of the Xbox button on the Xbox Series X, it's clear that Microsoft intends for the console to be stood up vertically, much in the same way that the current Xbox One consoles were designed to lay flat.

Microsoft also hasn't released a picture of what the Xbox Series X will look like in its horizontal orientation, but through advanced imaging technology (i.e., rotating an...

Final Fantasy VII Remake’s new trailer is all about Cloud

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:41 PM PST

FF7 remake

The long-awaited release of Final Fantasy VII Remake is quickly approaching, but in the mean time at least we have this nice, new look at Cloud Strife. Square Enix released the game's latest trailer tonight at The Game Awards, and its focused exclusively on everyone's favorite spiky-haired protagonist. The trailer provides a bit of backstory, which should be useful to those new to the game, though it doesn't answer important questions, like why Cloud's sword is so big.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is launching on the PS4 on March 3rd, though it's a timed exclusive, meaning it could hit other platforms in 2021. The release will represent the early, Midgar-focused portion of the original game, while subsequent titles are already in...

The Xbox Series X controller has a tweaked design and a Share button

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:37 PM PST

Microsoft just announced the new Xbox Series X, and along with the console comes a new Xbox Wireless Controller. It doesn't deviate too far from the existing Xbox One design, retaining signature features like the bumpers and rumble triggers, but there are a few meaningful tweaks.

Microsoft says the controller's "size and shape have been refined to accommodate an even wider range of people;" it's slightly smaller than before. The biggest new feature is a PS4-style dedicated Share button, which should simplify the experience when uploading screenshots and video clips. The D-pad has also been redesigned, moving from a cross shape to a circle style reminiscent of the Elite controller's.

The new controller will be packaged with Xbox Series X...

Godfall is the first game announced for the PlayStation 5

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:34 PM PST

Gearbox and Counterplay Games have just announced Godfall at The Game Awards, a "third-person fantasy looter-slasher focused on melee combat" that marks the first game announced for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5.

Godfall is set in an entirely new universe, and will support solo, duo, or three-player co-op (although no gameplay was shown at the show.) In the Gearbox spirit — which also publishes the Borderlands games — Godfall will have an emphasis on collecting ever-escalating sets of loot and weapons over the game.

It'll be out holiday 2020, and will also be released on the Epic Games Store.

Microsoft’s next Xbox is Xbox Series X, coming holiday 2020

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:14 PM PST

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox is officially called Xbox Series X. Microsoft revealed the name and console design on stage at the Game Awards today. The console itself looks far more like a PC than we've seen from previous Xbox consoles, and Microsoft's trailer provides a brief glimpse at the new design.

The console itself is designed to be used in both vertical and horizontal orientations, and Microsoft's Xbox chief, Phil Spencer, promises that it will "deliver four times the processing power of Xbox One X in the most quiet and efficient way."

Microsoft used the Xbox Series X to showcase Hellblade 2, a new game from Ninja Theory that is being developed for its next Xbox console. While Microsoft has revealed the design here, the...

The Expanse season 4 just arrived on Amazon Prime hours ahead of schedule

Posted: 12 Dec 2019 05:48 PM PST

For a while there, it seemed like beloved sci-fi show The Expanse might have been coming to an end, when Syfy decided not to renew it for a fourth season. But last May, Amazon stepped in — and right now, you can judge for yourself how well that decision panned out, because the ten-episode fourth season of The Expanse is now available to stream in its entirety on Amazon Prime.

"damn there goes my weekend," one Verge editor exclaimed in Slack chat, when I mentioned the news. (I'm not free this weekend, so maybe I'll start today.)

In our review of the first six episodes, we called it "very much the same show," and said it "feels like the beginning of a grand second act." So it may start a little slow — though it'll pick up right where we...
