Pinterest slashes contractor pay for the holidays Posted: 17 Dec 2019 05:27 PM PST ![]() It's been a big week for investigations here at The Interface. On Monday, we published my investigation into the mental health woes of content moderators for Google and YouTube who remove terrorist content from the web. And on Tuesday, Zoe published a follow-up investigation into the high-flying luggage company Away. There's a lot in there: an OSHA complaint, failed heating and air conditioning systems, cockroaches and mice in stores, and the indelible phrase "these fumes got me zeeted high key." Both stories explore the lives of workers that don't often make headlines: the entry-level workers and contractors who are essential to the day-to-day functioning of companies like Google and Away. Time and again, we see how these workers are... |
Unroll.me settles with FTC after falsely claiming it didn’t collect and sell email data Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:57 PM PST ![]() Before this year's blockbuster Superhuman scandal, in which the email app maker was caught providing a non-consensual read receipt feature to its users, there was the Unroll.me controversy. It erupted two years ago, when it was discovered the popular email cleanup tool was collecting information on user purchases and handing it over to its parent company, Slice Technologies, to sell as part of an analytics tool. Specifically, Unroll.me was caught selling receipt data to Uber so the ride hailing service could better target customers who might be using its competitor Lyft more often. It didn't go over well, especially after the CEO said he was heartbroken "to see that some of our users were upset to learn about how we monetize our free... |
The internet’s name regulator says it’s ‘uncomfortable’ with the .org deal Posted: 17 Dec 2019 04:01 PM PST ![]() Remember when the organization in charge of .org domain names traditionally used by non-profits decided to sell itself to a for-profit company? It surprised everyone because up to that point, there was little indication that the Internet Society (ISOC) was shopping the Public Interest Registry (PIR) for sale. Among those surprised, it appears, was ICANN, the organization that oversees the internet's top-level domains, which now says it is "uncomfortable" with the lack of transparency around the deal and wants ISOC to pump the brakes. "ICANN's role is to ensure that the .org top-level domain remains secure, reliable, and stable under the proposed acquisition of Public Interest Registry (PIR) by Ethos Capital," Göran Marby, ICANN... |
How to ask Google to delete conversations you didn’t want it to hear Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:13 PM PST ![]() Talking with Google Assistant can be a handy way to get answers to questions, run your smart home, or ask for the weather. But every once in awhile, the Assistant might reply to a question you didn't ask, or it might accidentally record a snippet of a conversation you didn't want it to hear. Pretty much everything you do while signed into your Google account on a device is stored by Google, so it's understandable that you might not want Google to have recordings of conversations you're not explicitly asking for Assistant's help with. Especially after Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft all got caught earlier this year using contractors to listen to voice recordings captured by their virtual assistants, some of which were captured... |
YouTube Music gets Spotify-like personalized playlists Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:06 PM PST ![]() YouTube Music has rolled out its first personalized playlists to all subscribers, including a rival to Spotify's Discover Weekly called Discover Mix. YouTube's Discover Mix and New Release Mix were spotted by some users back in September, but they're now available for all alongside a third personalized playlist called Your Mix. Discover Mix is meant to introduce you to new artists you've never heard of or serve up lesser-known tracks from artists you already have in rotation. While Spotify's weekly mix is 30 tracks and updates on Mondays, YouTube's has 50 songs and will update on Wednesdays. The New Release Mix will be stocked with recent releases from your favorite artists, sprinkled with some picks YouTube Music thinks you'll like.... |
Studio Ghibli movies are finally available to purchase digitally — but missing a major title Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:32 PM PST ![]() Fans have long bemoaned the inability to purchase digital versions of films from legendary Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli. But starting today, that's changed. Nearly the entire collection of Studio Ghibli movies are now available to purchase on all major platforms, including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play Store, Sony PlayStation Movies, Microsoft, and FandangoNow in both the United States and Canada. Both Japanese and English versions are available. All Studio Ghibli movies were previously only available to purchase as physical products. This is the first time the studio's titles are available to purchase digitally anywhere in the world. The list of movies includes:

Democrats want data on how sex workers were hurt by online crackdown Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:12 PM PST ![]() On Tuesday, lawmakers put out a new proposal that would require the federal government to study how a pair of laws that targeted online sex trafficking broadly kicked sex workers off the internet last year. In the lead-up to the passage of Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) / Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) last year, advocacy groups and sex workers rallied over how the bills could make them less safe by forcing sex workers off the internet where they build communities, screen potential clients for threats, and negotiate the terms of their work with others. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) has long opposed these measures, and in an effort to convince his colleagues to repeal them, he introduced the SAFE... |
Instagram now lets you upload multiple photos on one Story post with ‘layout’ feature Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:03 PM PST ![]() Instagram's newest Stories feature allows users to post multiple photos on one screen. The feature, called Layout, is launching globally today, and people can incorporate up to six photos. It's a simple feature, but one that'll likely be popular, especially given the multiple third-party story-editing apps that offer something similar. Within Instagram, the only way to previously pull off a similar trick was to copy a photo from a gallery and paste it in a text box. (It really works!) This feature speaks to Instagram's power, because while this layout tool might be a selling point for third-party apps, once Instagram incorporates it into its own app, its billion users no longer need a solution from a separate company. It's similar to... |
How to avoid Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker spoilers Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:35 AM PST ![]() The internet is full of spoilers, making it a dangerous place to hang around if you're trying to steer clear of what happens in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Watchmen, or any other TV shows, movies, or video games that you're still catching up on. Even when you think you've got things under control, Google's autocomplete feature has spoiled things before. URLs can contain spoilers, too. In addition, trolls can embed spoilers in unrelated content. When Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released, the film's biggest plot twist was hidden within a misleading video titled something like "LMAO funny Madden 16 glitches." (Needless to say, there were no funny Madden glitches to be found.) Of course, the most logical suggestion for avoiding... |
These leaked Galaxy Note 10 Lite pics suggest Samsung is embracing the camera rectangle Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:15 AM PST ![]() Samsung released the Galaxy Note 10 on August 23rd, but a new variant of it is apparently in the works. What appear to be leaked marketing images of the upcoming device have been posted by WinFuture, which reports it will be called the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. It seems the Galaxy Note 10 Lite will keep a hole-punch display for the front-facing camera, but its triple-camera system will be arranged in a rectangle, similar to the iPhone 11 and Pixel 4's camera squares and unlike the Galaxy Note 10's vertical camera row. The images also show the phone may still come with an S Pen and the device may come in black, a good-looking red, and one of Samsung's shimmery, multicolor gradient finishes. |
