TikTok owner ByteDance denies it’s exploring selling stake in popular app Posted: 24 Dec 2019 01:06 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge ByteDance is not currently exploring selling its stake in TikTok, despite a report from Bloomberg stating that preliminary conversations were held as scrutiny from US officials grows. TikTok head Alex Zhu sent an internal note to staff addressing the report, which was obtained by Reuters. Zhu told employees that "from time to time you may read stories in the media that are not true," and called Bloomberg's report inaccurate. Zhu added that executives haven't hosted any "discussions with potential buyers of TikTok, nor do we have any intention to." A TikTok representative also told Bloomberg that "these rumors are completely meritless." Bloomberg's report arrives as TikTok continues to recent attention from US officials, with some s... |
Disney is finally selling a cute Baby Yoda plush, but it won’t arrive anytime soon Posted: 24 Dec 2019 11:13 AM PST Disney is finally selling a proper, officially licensed Baby Yoda plush toy just in time for the holidays; the only problem is customers won't actually get it until early next year. The plushie is one of the cuter official pieces of Mandalorian merchandise Disney has introduced over the last few weeks. Standing at 11 inches, the plushie is outfitted with a faux suede coat and "fuzzy trims." It costs $24.99. All of these details seem great, but Disney notes on its website that customers shouldn't expect to receive their own Baby Yoda until March 1, 2020 at the earliest. "We expect this item to be available by 03/01/2020," the product page reads. "Pre-order it now and you will be notified via email when it is ready to ship."

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 5G appears to be on the way Posted: 24 Dec 2019 08:58 AM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The Galaxy Tab S6 will soon be available with 5G, making it possibly the first tablet with the faster connectivity. As spotted by SamMobile, the Galaxy Tab S6 5G is listed as coming soon on Samsung's Korean website, even though the company hasn't officially announced the device yet. There's no information about how much it will cost or any of its specs apart from the added 5G description at the end of the name. There's also no timeline for its release. The tablet's been rumored ever since it passed through the Wi-Fi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG. It's possible that the 5G version of the tablet will be essentially the same as the Tab S6, which was only released in September. That tablet includes the Snapdragon 855 processor, making 5G... |
YouTube updates mobile app for improved TV experience Posted: 24 Dec 2019 08:24 AM PST Youtube mobile app voice search | Google YouTube wants to make it easier for people to watch, control, and have the full YouTube experience on any device of their choosing. In a blog post published late last week, the platform outlined changes its product team made to its mobile apps this year, including a new feature that allows people to voice search on either the iOS or Android app, even when their phone is casting to a TV. For example, you can search for dinner recipes on your phone, and content will show up on your TV that fits what you're hoping to find. The company also says it now allows people to watch videos in HDR when streaming from a PlayStation 4 or Playstation 4 Pro. Other possible changes for the Android mobile app appear to be in the works, too. German... |
Travis Kalanick is leaving Uber’s board of directors Posted: 24 Dec 2019 06:13 AM PST Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick is resigning from the company's board of directors. The news comes after Kalanick sold more than $2.5 billion in stock — more than 90 percent of his stake — when the lock-up on his shares expired. By exiting the board and selling his shares, he has essentially cut himself entirely off from the company he helped found. Kalanick's last day will be December 31, 2019, after which time he'll focus on his "new business and philanthropic endeavors." This is likely a reference to his new startup, CloudKitchens, which he has bragged will be "bigger than Uber," according to reporting by The Information. He will have sold all his shares in Uber by Thursday, exiting his holding in Uber entirely, The New York Times... |
Star Wars’ barely there same-sex kiss cut from Rise of Skywalker in Singapore Posted: 24 Dec 2019 06:08 AM PST Star Wars' first same-sex kiss has been cut from The Rise of Skywalker in Singapore. The blink-and-you-might-miss-it moment takes place near the film's end, when two peripheral characters share a quick smooch among celebrations. According to The Guardian, the kiss was clipped from the film in order to keep its PG-13 rating. Singapore does not recognize same-sex marriage; sex between men is illegal and punishable by law. Films featuring LGBTQ content are subject to censorship or harsh ratings. Disney did not respond to a request for comment about the clip's removal before publication. It's taken nine main series films and a handful of spinoffs for Star Wars to get its first LGBTQ representation. While many fans had hoped that the series... |
Could Samsung’s next Galaxy Fold phone have a glass display? Posted: 24 Dec 2019 04:09 AM PST Images of what's rumored to be Samsung's next foldable phone. | 王奔宏 via Weibo Earlier this month we saw images of a foldable device with a clamshell design rumored to be Samsung's next foldable phone. Now, to add a little more spice to this speculation, we ask: could this device also be using glass instead of plastic for its screen? That's what phone leaker Ice Universe claims, tweeting today that Samsung has created "an ultra-thin glass cover" for its next foldable, and pointing to the smooth and unwrinkled appearance of the screen of the unknown device as proof. (The plastic screens of foldable devices often look rippled when seen at an angle, and only accrue more creases with time.)

Two new Pokémon games launch on Facebook Gaming Posted: 24 Dec 2019 02:42 AM PST A pair of new Pokémon games have launched exclusively on Facebook Gaming: Pokémon Tower Battle and Pokémon Medallion Battle. Pokémon Tower Battle is available worldwide, and pits two players against one another. You take it in turns to drop pokémon out of the sky like Tetris blocks, trying to build a stable tower. If you knock the tower over or your pokémon tumbles off the platform, you lose. We tried the game ourselves and it seems pretty mindless, though the press release promises some new features as you play: "As players discover, catch and level-up rare pokémon, they can compete in real-time against friends or across a global leaderboard. It might seem like a simple physics-based puzzler at first, but the strategic choices in... |
