Uber’s first ever safety report discloses 3,045 sexual assaults and nine murders in the US last year Posted: 05 Dec 2019 04:28 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Uber has for the first time in its history released a comprehensive safety report about its rides in the US spanning the full length of 2018 and part of 2017. The report discloses that 3,045 sexual assaults occurred during Uber trips last year. Additionally, Uber says nine people were murdered during Uber rides and 58 people died in auto-related crashes. The numbers represent the first set of publicly available data regarding the safety of Uber's ride-hailing platform and how it compares to national US averages. Uber says users took 3.1 million trips per day on the its platform during the period between 2017 and the end of 2018 in which it was gathering data, and there were also 1.3 billion trips in total in the US last year. FCC won’t punish Verizon and T-Mobile for exaggerating their coverage maps Posted: 05 Dec 2019 03:04 PM PST Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images Verizon, T-Mobile, and US Cellular overstated their 4G coverage in rural communities across the country, a Federal Communications Commission investigation determined on Wednesday. Despite the Commission's findings, it will not punish the carriers in any way. Throughout its investigation, the FCC staff ran speed and coverage tests in rural areas across the country to determine whether consumers were receiving sufficient download speeds. According to the FCC's report, "only 62.3 percent of staff drive tests" met those thresholds. US Cellular achieved it only 45 percent of the time, while T-Mobile and Verizon met the standard at around 60 percent of the time. The FCC staff was unable to receive any 4G signal in 38 percent of US Cellular's... |
Early 16-inch MacBook Pro complaints include speaker ‘popping’ and display ghosting Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:14 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge The new 16-inch MacBook Pro finally righted Apple's keyboard debacle, and it's a beast of a machine in terms of performance. But early buyers have still managed to uncover some bugs with the latest MacBook Pro — and one hardware characteristic that might put off some people. As noted by AppleInsider (and backed by this long MacRumors forum thread), owners of the 16-inch MacBook Pro are complaining about an intermittent "popping" sound coming from the speakers. It's noticeable after audio playback is stopped. From AppleInsider:

Google Fiber is now only offering its gigabit plan to new customers Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:13 PM PST Google Fiber is phasing out its lower-priced 100 Mbps internet access plan, opting to offer only the core gigabit-speed plan to new users. Google announced the decision yesterday, saying customers had "caught on to our early vision" for super-fast internet. The 100 Mbps option cost $50 per month, while the 1,000 Mbps alternative actually doesn't cost much more; it's remained at $70 per month (with no data cap) since Google Fiber launched in 2012. That's a pretty good deal, although, as we've written before, Google Fiber's ambitions are a lot more modest than they used to be. So the news applies to a pretty small percentage of Americans. Fiber scaled back its rollouts in the mid-'00s and had to pull out of Louisville, Kentucky earlier... |
Caring about climate change is trendy on Tinder Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:10 PM PST Generation Z has taken over Tinder, and they care more about causes like climate change than they do about posting adventurous vacation shots, according to a "Year in Swipe" report Tinder released today. Unlike their millennial counterparts, Tinder's report says that their younger users — the majority of people on Tinder are now under age 25 — are more likely to mention a cause or mission they're passionate about on their profile. When it comes to what they're the most passionate about, climate change and the environment topped the list along with social justice and gun control. "Millennials connect over adventure, while Gen Z bonds over changing the world," Tinder said in its release. Millennials were three times as likely to talk... |
Twitter’s new Twitter Retweets account highlights the best tweets on the platform Posted: 05 Dec 2019 01:32 PM PST It is perhaps an understatement to say that Twitter is often a bad place to be on the internet in 2019. But what if there were a place where with only good tweets? That's the idea behind Twitter's latest effort, @TwitterRetweets, a new account that aims to highlight the best of Twitter. Per the account description, Twitter Retweets will provide followers with "Your best Tweets. Retweeted." In many ways, Twitter Retweets is an extension of Twitter's recent marketing efforts from over the summer that also sought to highlight the good parts of the platform (and not just the endless stream of bots, misinformation, Nazis, and misinformed Nazi-bots). Twitter also recently relaunched its Instagram account in a similar vein, posting screenshots... |
Riot launches publishing label to create even more League of Legends games Posted: 05 Dec 2019 01:00 PM PST For its 10th anniversary in October, Riot announced a number of new initiatives meant to expand the League of Legends universe, including a fighting game, mobile spinoff, animated series, and others. But there are plenty more in the works. Today, Riot announced a brand-new publishing label, which will see the developer partner with smaller studios to create even more League of Legends games. In fact, multiple titles are already in development, though Riot isn't ready to announce specific games or partners just yet. According to Leanne Loombe, head of the new label — which has been dubbed Riot Forge — the company is looking to work with studios with an existing track record. "One of the key elements we often look for is the studio having... |
Mike Bloomberg’s massive network of terminals quietly promoted his campaign website Posted: 05 Dec 2019 12:57 PM PST Photo by Noam Galai/WireImage Michael Bloomberg temporarily had a tiny but extremely questionable advantage in the 2020 presidential race: if you typed "Mike" into one of his company's roughly 325,000 news terminals around the globe, you were redirected to his campaign site, reported the Financial Times. The FT made this GIF, so you can see for yourself just how fully that query thrust you into Bloomberg's candidacy: Apparently, the FT's story caused the former New York City mayor to reconsider, though. A Bloomberg spokesperson tells The Verge that the redirect now goes to his biography page instead. They also claim that it was an honest mistake, saying "Mike" had pointed to Bloomberg's personal website since the 1990s, a website that didn't... |
Pokémon Go creator Niantic is working on AR glasses with Qualcomm Posted: 05 Dec 2019 12:47 PM PST Qualcomm Qualcomm just announced a new virtual and augmented reality platform, and it's working with Niantic — the company behind games like Ingress and Pokémon Go — on a smart glasses reference design. The Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform is a follow-up to the earlier XR1 platform, and, like its predecessor, it's specifically designed for AR and VR hardware. But it now supports 5G connectivity as well as voice-based interaction, eye tracking, and passthrough camera capabilities, among other features. Qualcomm's XR2 is a substantial upgrade to the XR1. It allows screen resolutions of up to 3K per eye at 90 frames per second as well as 8K resolution 360-degree video playing at 60 frames per second. It also supports up to seven concurrent cameras,... |
Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8c and 7c processors will power cheaper ARM laptops Posted: 05 Dec 2019 12:30 PM PST Qualcomm has had big ambitions for ARM-powered Windows laptops for years. At its annual Snapdragon Tech Summit, the chipmaker revealed its biggest play yet: the Snapdragon 8c and the Snapdragon 7c, two new processors that are designed to create a new lineup of ARM chips for Windows laptops. The 8c is positioned as a replacement for the Snapdragon 850 processor, Qualcomm's second-generation Windows ARM chip. The 7c is an entirely new entry-level product that's meant to compete with budget Windows laptops on the low end of the hardware spectrum. Last year's 8cx isn't going anywhere; it'll remain a top-of-the-line flagship option for those who want the absolute best performance. On the spec side, Qualcomm says that the 8c will offer up to... |
