After an already devastating start to its fire season, Australia is bracing for things to get worse. The Verge will update this page with news and analysis as the fires rage.

What's happening?

Dozens of fires erupted in New South Wales, Australia in November and rapidly spread across the entire continent to become some of the most devastating on record. An area about twice the size of Belgium, roughly 15 million acres, has burned. At least 18 people are dead, including at least three volunteer firefighters, and more are missing. More than 1,000 houses have been destroyed, hundreds more damaged. As blazes intensified in the days leading up to New Year's Eve, thousands of people who were forced...

This electronic album was made for the SNES and you can buy it as a cartridge

German musician Remute has made and released music on a variety of old mediums, but his newest effort marks a quirky milestone: The Cult Of Remute is claimed to be the first music album made entirely for the Super Nintendo's sound chip and released on an SNES cartridge.

Creating within severe restraints is nothing new for Remute. In the past, he's released music on a floppy disk and programmed an album using the sound chip for '90s game console Sega Genesis. But he tells The Verge that creating this new album with the SNES's limitations was more difficult than previous projects because of the system's "merciless" filesize limit.

Where the Sega Genesis' main sound chip is a fully fledged FM synthesizer that can be controlled in a pretty...

Google News discontinues ‘print replica’ PDFs of magazines

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:24 PM PST

Stop me if you've heard this, but: Google is discontinuing a product. This time, it's the print replica magazines in Google News, which are the PDF versions of print pages you could view on phones or via desktop. However, pinching the view on your phone screen to read a PDF of a print magazine page apparently didn't catch on, and I'm as astonished as you are.

Android Police reported that Google sent an email to current magazine subscribers to inform them of the change, effective immediately. While it won't be offering print layout pages via Google News any longer, Google suggested that readers could still visit a magazine's website, which perhaps they are already doing since it's 2020.

"Publishers can continue selling content on Google...

Mike Bloomberg has spent nearly $15 million to be in your Google search results

The 77-year-old former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is running for president, on a centrist-friendly platform that's mainly premised on beating incumbent Donald Trump. What makes Bloomberg's campaign stand out, however, isn't his positions: it's how much he's spending to get his message out. Google "impeachment," for example, and you'll probably get an ad at the top of the page that promotes Bloomberg's campaign. Same goes for "climate change" and "gun safety." It's all over the place, but it does guarantee the eyeballs of people who are searching for answers related to ongoing political conversations brought up in the race.

And those ads aren't cheap. The Bloomberg ad for impeachment reads "Trump's Broken Promises | Enough Is...

This wireless power startup says it can charge your phone using only radio waves

True wireless power transmission, without cords or charging mats, has been a white whale for the technology industry for decades. But a new startup born out of the California Institute of Technology claims it's figured out how to pull it off in a way that is small, cheap, and efficient enough to be commercialized. Called Guru, the company has built a wireless charging system that transmits electricity using high-frequency radio waves, specifically the millimeter wave (mmWave) variety that underpins burgeoning 5G cell networks in the US.

Next week at CES, Guru is unveiling three prototype charging products it wants to develop in partnership with electronics manufacturers, but the company gave The Verge an early look at the technology and...

8BitDo’s tiny $20 keychain controller is now available

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 12:13 PM PST

8BitDo, which is known for its high-quality third-party controllers and its retro-inspired designs, is launching a tiny, keychain-sized Bluetooth controller called the Zero 2. It's compatible with Windows, macOS, Raspberry Pi, Android devices, and both the Nintendo Switch and the Switch Lite. The controller, which was first teased last summer at E3, is now available to purchase for $20 and it comes in pink, yellow, and turquoise. Unfortunately, it seems the retro Nintendo finish from last year's teaser image isn't available just yet.

At just 20 grams, the controller is small enough to carry around as a keychain, which the company provides. That'll come in super handy if you're at a friend's place and you happen to need an extra...

The holidays and big sale seasons are over, but that doesn't mean that all of the deals are gone. While many items are no longer for sale, or now cost more than they did during Black Friday, there are still a few great deals on the internet. We've rounded them up for you here.

Apple's HomePod is on sale for $189.88 at Other World Computing, down from its list price of $299. This is the lowest price we've ever seen it. These HomePods are in new condition and they're available in white. For a little extra, you can purchase it in space gray for $194.88.

If you prepay for two months of Sling TV (that's $60 total), you can get a free Fire TV Stick (priced at $39.99). However, this deal...

Apple now lets you engrave a poop emoji on your AirPods case

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:07 AM PST

Apple has long offered the option to engrave text on select products purchased through its online store. And now, you're able to engrave emoji onto the company's AirPods cases, too (via MacRumors).

Apple only lets you engrave a limited set of emoji, but there are some pretty fun options, including the fist bump, all of the Zodiac animals, and the poop emoji. Here are all of the emoji that you can engrave:

Unfortunately, Apple won't let you engrave both text and emoji on your AirPods case; you have to pick one or the other. But if you only get text engraved on the case, it appears Apple has made the engraved font significantly larger than it was before.

Hopefully, Apple will add more emoji choices in the future (perhaps the...

Xiaomi says issue that showed strangers’ images on Nest devices is identified but not fully resolved

Images of strangers on a Xiaomi camera's stream to a Google Nest Hub were due to a "cache update," Xiaomi told The Verge. The company added that it has fixed the issue, but Nest integration remains suspended until the "root cause has been completely solved."

As first reported by Android Police, a Reddit user posted images he said came from his Xiaomi Mijia 1080p Smart IP security camera when he tried to stream from the camera to a Google Nest Hub. The still images of strangers included a man sleeping in a chair, a security camera view of a porch, and a sleeping baby.

Xiaomi told The Verge in a statement that a cache update...
