Galaxy Z Flip teardown reveals that its hinge brushes may not block much dust Posted: 18 Feb 2020 05:29 PM PST ![]() iFixit has posted a video teardown of Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip, giving us good look at the phone's internals and revealing that the brushes on its hinge might not stop much dust from getting inside your phone. When Samsung announced the Z Flip last week, it highlighted how the phone's hinge has a "fiber shield" intended to trap stray dust and keep it from getting inside the phone. You can see Samsung's zoomed-in marketing photo of it below. It looks impressive in the marketing photo, but iFixit put that fiber shield to the test — and the results weren't great. For the test, iFixit folded up the Z Flip and dropped it into a bag of purple dust. After taking the phone... |
Activision Blizzard exec leaks that Overwatch might become a TV series Posted: 18 Feb 2020 04:08 PM PST ![]() Since 2014, Blizzard has released so many breathtaking cinematic videos for Overwatch that most of us have wondered when Blizzard would finally look into adapting the game to the big screen or as a TV show. (The comparisons to Pixar have been around since the very beginning.) Well, an Activision Blizzard executive's resume now hints that Blizzard did explore the possibility of an actual Overwatch TV show, one that might even still be on the way — and there may be a Diablo one, too. According to the LinkedIn profile of Nick van Dyk, who just so happens to be in charge of the part of Activision Blizzard responsible for building TV shows and movies, he was personally involved in developing and selling an animated Overwatch TV show. The... |
An Indian politician used AI to translate his speech into other languages to reach more voters Posted: 18 Feb 2020 02:35 PM PST ![]() As social media platforms move to crack down on deepfakes and misinformation in the US elections, an Indian politician has used artificial intelligence techniques to make it look like he said things he didn't say, Vice reports. In one version of a campaign video, Manoj Tiwari speaks in English; in the fabricated version, he "speaks" in the Hindi dialect of Haryanvi. Political communications firm The Ideaz Factory told Vice it was working with Tiwari's Bharatiya Janata Party to create "positive campaigns" using the same technology used in deepfake videos, and dubbed in an actor's voice to read the script in Haryanvi. "We used a 'lip-sync' deepfake algorithm and trained it with speeches of Manoj Tiwari to translate audio sounds into... |
Bill Gates bought a Porsche, and then Elon Musk talked trash about him Posted: 18 Feb 2020 12:41 PM PST ![]() Bill Gates bought an electric car. But while he's given Tesla credit for pushing other carmakers to go electric, it does seem notable that he didn't buy from the company that pushed the innovation. He bought a Porsche Taycan. Someone alerted Elon Musk to this development, of course. And that got us a bitchy tweet from Musk: "My conversations with Gates have been underwhelming tbh." It's true that Musk likes beef; after all, he's made cracks about Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon's Jeff Bezos. (Actually, it seems like Musk and Bezos have a lively rivalry going.)
But the Gates fight strikes me as different — precisely because... |
Elon Musk says AI development should be better regulated, even at Tesla Posted: 18 Feb 2020 11:53 AM PST ![]() Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to see all artificial intelligence better regulated, even at his own company, he tweeted Monday (via TechCrunch). He made the remark in response to a piece about OpenAI by MIT Technology Review, which claimed that the AI organization, co-founded by Musk, has shifted from its mission of developing and distributing AI safely and equitably into a secretive company obsessed with image and driven to constantly raise more money.
Musk has a history of expressing serious concerns about the negative potential of AI. He tweeted in 2014 that it could be "more dangerous than nukes," and told an audience at an... |
Iron Man dreams are closer to becoming a reality thanks to this new Jetman Dubai video Posted: 18 Feb 2020 11:46 AM PST ![]() Tony Stark may have destroyed his Iron Man suits in Iron Man 3 (only to bring out a whole new line in Avengers: Age of Ultron), but Jetman Dubai's Iron Man-like dreams of autonomous human flight are realer than ever. A new video published by the company shows pilot Vince Reffet using a jet-powered, carbon-fiber suit to launch off the ground and fly 6,000 feet in the air. The video, seen above, was taken in Dubai, heading south toward Jumeirah Beach Residence, according to the company. Jetman Dubai's YouTube video notes that in "eight seconds [Reffet] had reached 100 meters height, in 12 seconds 200m, 19 seconds 500m, and reached 1000m in 30 seconds at an average speed of 130 knots." This isn't the first time that Reffet and his team... |

Adobe’s product chief explains how pro apps are changing in response to TikTok Posted: 18 Feb 2020 10:41 AM PST ![]() More people are becoming video editors, but it's increasingly happening inside of apps like TikTok and Instagram where creators and influencers can take advantage of the unique video editing tools and filters without going anywhere else. So how does traditional photo and video editing software like Adobe Photoshop and Premiere fit into this new wave of content creation? Adobe's chief product officer, Scott Belsky, sat down with Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel and Verge reporter Dami Lee to answer that question. Belsky also touched on a plethora of topics under his domain — from what he learned from putting Photoshop on the iPad to adapting products to new creators and platforms to the goals of the Content Authenticity Initiative. Jaguar Land Rover unveils ‘autonomy ready’ electric shuttle concept Posted: 18 Feb 2020 10:11 AM PST ![]() Jaguar Land Rover is the latest automaker to unveil an electric and "autonomy ready" shuttle pod designed for shared use in urban settings. "Project Vector" is just a concept, but the UK carmaker said it hopes to have some version of the vehicle on the road for testing by 2021. For now, the automaker is keeping most of its specs under wraps. The vehicle is four meters long, with a motor and battery pack built into a flat floor, but JLR won't reveal the size of the battery or the range of the vehicle. The interior can be adjusted for private or shared use as well as for last-mile delivery service. Unlike GM and Honda's recently unveiled Cruise Origin... |
