Second coronavirus death confirmed in Washington state Posted: 01 Mar 2020 06:57 PM PST Evergreen Health Medical Center, where two patients have died from the novel coronavirus | Photo by David Ryder/Getty Images A second person died of the coronavirus in Washington, according to local health authorities. It is also the second death from the disease in the U.S. Three more people in the county have also been hospitalized as a result of the disease. There are now 10 confirmed cases of illnesses from the new coronavirus in King County, Washington. A man in his 70s died at EvergreenHealth Medical Center in Kirkland — the same hospital where the death of a man in his 50s was announced yesterday. Both men had underlying health problems. The three other new cases are two women, one in her 80s and one in her 90s, and a man in his 70s. All three have other health issues. They are in critical condition. These new cases, including the death, are in people... |
Mike Bloomberg cosplays as president in coronavirus ad Posted: 01 Mar 2020 06:06 PM PST Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images Billionaire Mike Bloomberg's presidential campaign purchased primetime ad space Sunday night — reportedly worth at least $1 million — so the former New York City mayor could cosplay as the president of the U.S. He addressed the nation, vaguely, about the threat of coronavirus. Bloomberg's ad ran around 8:30PM ET on CBS and NBC, during "God Friended Me," a CBS exclusive about an atheist who gets a friend request from God. The ad space could have cost the Bloomberg campaign anywhere from $1.25 to 3 million, The New York Times reported Saturday. In this three-minute ad, Bloomberg stands in a room — or in front of a green screen of a room? — that looks remarkably similar to the White House's Oval Office. He wears a pin in the shape of an... |
Lionkiller turns the legend of Mulan into an interactive story during the Opium Wars Posted: 01 Mar 2020 08:00 AM PST It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend. Tools like Twine have made it easier than ever to make interactive text-based games. But while they can be simple to make, that doesn't make it any easier to tell an engaging story. As a writer, you have nowhere to hide: there aren't graphical avatars for the player to control or music and voice acting to help tell the story. It's just words and hyperlinks. Despite that, games like Lionkiller show just how engaging and powerful interactive fiction can be — even if they only have words to work with. Lionkiller... |
Run an America full of talking animals in Democratic Socialism Simulator Posted: 01 Mar 2020 07:00 AM PST Molleindustria There are simulation games that try to be neutral. SimCity never lays out its philosophy of urban planning. Democracy lets you rewrite its rules to role-play any democratic system. These are games that aim to reflect reality, and sometimes, developers even recoil at the idea that they have an ideology at all. Democratic Socialism Simulator is not that kind of allegedly dispassionate system. It's a new project from Molleindustria, the studio founded by Carnegie Mellon professor and developer Paolo Pedercini, known for games like Phone Story and Every Day the Same Dream. Part wry edutainment and part leftist in-joke, DSS makes you the first Democratic Socialist president of America and then pelts you with scandals, lobbyists, and impending... |
From The Strategist: the 10 best eco-friendly condoms and lubes Posted: 01 Mar 2020 06:00 AM PST Looking for eco-friendly condoms is complicated. Kim Marks, the owner of As You Like It, a nontoxic and environmentally conscious sex shop in Eugene, Oregon, describes the concept as a Catch-22: "Condoms are onetime use, but we need them for safe sex," she says. Matthew Nolan, the co-author of the Oh Joy Sex Toy book series who runs a website of the same name, agrees. "Condoms are super tricky," he says. "Almost all condoms are made from latex or a latex derivative — stuff that takes forever to degrade. The best thing you can aim for is a cruelty-free, considerate condom manufacturer." And there are a handful of companies that go the extra mile to ensure that their rubber and manufacturing processes are sustainable. "As an FDA-approved... |
