Travis Scott’s first Fortnite concert was surreal and spectacular Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:17 PM PDT If there's one thing you can say about Fortnite's live events, it's that they keep getting more ambitious. From the original rocket launch to the mech vs. kaiju battle to the black hole that wiped out an entire island, each new event is more elaborate than the last. Now we can say the same is true of the concerts. Last year's Marshmello show was an exciting, dynamic example of what a virtual concert could look like. This week's Travis Scott performance blew it out of the water. Epic had been setting the stage for the concert since last weekend — literally. Over the last few days players could see a stage being constructed at the Sweaty Sands beach, and it grew more complete as the days passed. There was a black stage on top of the water,... |

Twitter is taking down a fake Joe Biden ad amplified by Trump campaign staffers Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:14 PM PDT Photo credit should read Michael Brochstein / Echoes Wire/Barcroft Media via Getty Images Over the last few days, a fake Joe Biden campaign ad has gone viral across Twitter, boosted in part by current and former Trump campaign staffers. After The Verge's report on the image, Twitter said that it was in violation of its elections rules. The image shows Biden with a beam of light emanating from his chest with "His brain? No. His heart." overlaid on top with the campaign's official logo, too. This tweet appears to be the original and has accrued over 10,000 retweets and 62,000 likes as of publication. The fake ad has also been posted across other social media platforms like Reddit and Tumblr but caught fire on Twitter this week after an account called @khakijorts posted the image, captioning it, "This is a real ad 100% cannot... |
Avatar: The Last Airbender is hitting Netflix on May 15th Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:07 PM PDT Image: Nickelodeon All three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be hitting Netflix in the US on May 15th, the streaming platform announced today. The beloved animated show follows the adventures of Aang, the show's namesake Avatar, as he masters the elements of water, earth, fire, and air and helps stop the Fire Nation's war against the world. It originally aired on Nickelodeon from February 2005 to July 2008. It's not Netflix's first connection to Avatar — the streaming service is currently working on a live-action adaptation of the show (which will hopefully be better than the M. Night Shyamalan movie version), and Netflix's The Dragon Prince, which was co-created by Avatar: The Last Airbender screenwriter Aaron Ehasz.

NASA administrator urges people not to travel to Florida to watch historic SpaceX launch Posted: 23 Apr 2020 03:49 PM PDT At the end of May, NASA astronauts are slated to launch to space from the United States once again, after nearly a decade of launching on Russian rockets from Kazakhstan — but NASA does not want members of the public to travel to see the mission in person. NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine is urging people to stay home and watch the historic mission online because of safety concerns associated with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. "We are asking people to join us in this launch, but to do so from home," NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said during a press conference today on the agency's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This upcoming launch is set to be a significant achievement for both NASA and the United States. On May 27th,... |
Even Elijah Wood needs Twitter’s help to sell his Animal Crossing turnips Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:54 PM PDT Image: Jessa (@directedbyrian) The stalk market in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is bringing the internet together. After one user shared her incredible turnip prices on Twitter today, it caught the attention of The Lord of Rings star Elijah Wood. Wood privately messaged Jessa (@directedbyrian) asking for her Dodo code so he could visit her island to sell his turnips. Her shop today was purchasing turnips for 599 bells each, which is a particularly good number to sell your turnips — normally, a good selling price is between the 300 to 400 bells range. After making a great profit on his turnips, Wood hung out with Jessa on her island. Not only did he compliment on how "beautiful" her island was, but Wood also showed proper Animal Crossing etiquette by asking if he may... |
Instacart is hiring even more shoppers and adding ‘wellness checks’ to its shopper app Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:53 PM PDT An Instacart shopper in Washington D.C. prepares to fulfill a supermarket order | Photo by Evelyn Hockstein/For The Washington Post via Getty Images Grocery delivery platform Instacart says it plans to add 250,000 new workers, is extending the sick pay period for shoppers with COVID-19, and is introducing new safety measures for workers, including an in-app wellness check. Instacart announced exactly a month ago it was adding 300,000 new shoppers to meet the huge demand for grocery delivery during the coronavirus pandemic. It's part of a massive uptick in hiring for "essential businesses" that remain open despite widespread stay-at-home orders; Walmart said it would hire 150,000 new workers and Amazon said it was adding 100,000 new employees. Instacart's new "wellness check" is a questionnaire in its app that asks workers if they have negative symptoms. If workers say they aren't... |
Amazon reportedly accessed third-party seller data to develop private-label products Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:06 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Amazon employees have accessed sales data from independent Marketplace sellers to help the company develop competing private-label products, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Past Amazon employees and one current one told the WSJ that rules barring the practice weren't uniformly enforced. In addition, former Amazon employees said using the sales data from sellers was "a common practice that was discussed openly in meetings they attended," according to the report. One former employee told the WSJ they knew they were violating the policies:

The auto industry’s fight with the FCC over ‘vehicle-to-everything’ communication is heating up Posted: 23 Apr 2020 12:41 PM PDT The auto industry is promising to dramatically expand "vehicle-to-everything" communication technology, but only if the Federal Communication Commission rolls back its decision to take away the current airwaves dedicated to that technology. Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology is expected to increase road safety by allowing vehicles to communicate with one another, as well as smart infrastructure like traffic signals, to better avoid crashes or other mishaps. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group that represents all of the major automakers and their suppliers, released a statement Thursday vowing to install 5 million pieces of V2X equipment over the next five years. But that promise was predicated on the FCC reversing... |
Bill Gates says countries will probably use interviews and databases to track the coronavirus Posted: 23 Apr 2020 11:59 AM PDT Photo by Nicolas Liponne/NurPhoto via Getty Images Bill Gates thinks most countries will fight COVID-19 with interview-based contact tracing and a central database to track exposure. Gates posted a paper today outlining potential pandemic treatments, vaccines, and containment strategies. He calls contact tracing, which helps identify and isolate people who could spread the virus, an "ideal way" to stop the pandemic. But he downplayed the importance of decentralized tech-only options like those proposed by Apple and Google, focusing on more traditional methods combined with large-scale data analysis. Gates believes privacy concerns will stop many countries from adopting GPS tracking like that used in South Korea and China. He also seems lukewarm on Bluetooth-based contact tracing systems,... |
