How to Ship Food

Posted: 22 Apr 2021 01:00 AM PDT

Shipping food can be tricky, especially if you're sending something perishable, like refrigerated foods or baked goods. It's important to ship these foods out as quickly and efficiently as possible, or else they can start collecting bacteria.[1] While it may cost a bit of extra money, you only need a few simple packaging supplies to mail your food as quickly as possible.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Packaging Cold Foods

  1. Select a large cardboard box that will fit your food. Estimate how much space your frozen or refrigerated food will take up. If you're preparing a large shipment, you'll need a large cardboard box to serve as the base for your package. If you're sending something smaller, like a mini container of ice cream, you may be able to use a smaller shipping box.[2]
Ship Food Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • You can find cardboard boxes at most stores that sell mailing supplies. If you'd like to save on shipping costs, visit your local post office to see if you can use any specially priced boxes.
  2. Choose a sturdy styrofoam container that will insulate your cold food. Look for a styrofoam carton that fits snugly inside of your cardboard box, and is at least thick. Check that there's enough room in the carton for your refrigerated or frozen goods, along with space for your gel packs or dry ice.[3]
Ship Food Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Some companies sell insulated shipping boxes, which come with both a cardboard box and a styrofoam carton.
  3. Bag your food with plastic if it may melt or leak. Think about the type of food you're sending—if it's likely to melt over time during shipment, place the food in 2 secure plastic bags. Squeeze out any extra air from the first bag so it's airtight. Twist the top of the bag into a coil and fold it downwards, then secure it place with a rubber band. Repeat this process with a second bag so your food is completely secure[4]
Ship Food Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Any plastic bag works well for this.
    • If you're shipping something extra fresh, like seafood, consider placing absorbent pads along the bottom of your container. This can protect your box from turning soggy.
  4. Place a liner bag in the center of the styrofoam carton. Purchase a large, rectangular plastic bag that "lines" the styrofoam layer of the box, which protects the package from leaks. Secure this into the box first so you can place your refrigerated or frozen food securely inside.[5]
Ship Food Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • You can find liner bags online, or at a store selling mailing supplies.
  5. Add gel packs or dry ice so the food stays under . Layer dry ice packs around your container of chilled food. Always use gloves when handling dry ice or other cold packs so you don't get frostbite. Place another cold pack on top of the food so it stays completely chilled in transit.[6]
Ship Food Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • You can purchase cold packs from any specialty store selling mailing supplies.
  6. Seal the package and wrap it with 2 layers of packing paper. Place a lid over the styrofoam carton and tape the cardboard box shut. As an extra precaution, wrap the entire box with 2 layers of brown mailing paper.[7]
Ship Food Step 6 Version 2.jpg
  7. Write the recipient and your contact info on the box. Address the package to your desired recipient, and include your own name and return address on the package. Leave your phone number as well as the recipient's on the box, so a postal service worker can call one of you if something goes wrong with the package.[8]
Ship Food Step 7 Version 2.jpg
  8. Tell the recipient to expect a package. Call, text, or email the person to let them know to expect a special delivery in a day or two. Remind them to open it and store the food right away, or else it may go bad.[9]
Ship Food Step 8 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Sending Baked Goods

  1. Ship baked goods that aren't as likely to crumble. Choose a sturdy recipe that can take a potential beating in the mail, like cookies, unfrosted cupcakes, or brownies. Use caution when shipping anything really thin or delicate, as well as any desserts that need refrigeration.[10]
Ship Food Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • For instance, it's better to mail an apple pie than a lemon meringue pie.
  2. Support your food to keep it from crumbling. Wrap your food with foil or plastic wrap to keep it as fresh as possible. If you're shipping brownies or bars, secure a sheet of wax paper between each tier so the baked goods don't stick together.[11]
Ship Food Step 10 Version 2.jpg
  3. Store your food in an airtight container or package. Place your dessert in a secure box or container. Check that all the air is pushed out of the container so your baked goods don't go stale in transit.[12]
    Ship Food Step 11.jpg
    • Reusable plastic containers can work for this, or a box or tin.
  4. Seal and label the package as you normally would. Close off the package with packing tape, then add a mailing label to the top of the box. Write out your return address as well as the recipient's address so the post office knows where the package needs to go.[13]As an extra precaution, write "Perishable" on the side of the box so the postal service employees and your recipient know that something delicate is inside.[14]
    Ship Food Step 12.jpg

[Edit]Choosing a Delivery Time

  1. Send out your food early in the week so it ships quickly. Try to ship your food on Monday or Tuesday, so the box doesn't get stuck in a post office over the weekend. Avoid sending your shipment on Friday or Saturday, or your food may end up spoiling.[15]
    Ship Food Step 13.jpg
  2. Aim for your package to arrive at its destination within 30 hours. Select the fastest mailing option your post office provides so your food gets to the recipient ASAP. Keep in mind that this may be a bit pricey, but it's a necessity when shipping perishable foods, especially refrigerated or frozen ones.[16]
    Ship Food Step 14.jpg
    • Frozen or refrigerated food needs to stay under . If it thaws out too much, it'll start to spoil.
  3. Add a tracking number to your package so you can keep track of it. Ask a post office employee if they can give you a tracking number for the package. Input this number on the post office's website to monitor where your package is, so you can make sure it reaches its destination within 30 hours.[17]
    Ship Food Step 15.jpg

[Edit]Warning

  • Cold shipping can get a bit pricey depending on the supplies that you use. If you can, deliver the food in person.

How to Lighten Dark Grey Hair

Posted: 21 Apr 2021 05:00 PM PDT

If your grey hair is darker than you'd like, you definitely have options for lightening it up a bit. Working with grey hair can be tricky, though, since it's fragile and technically has no pigment in it. Don't worry—we've researched everything you need to know about lightening and brightening grey hair so we could answer your most pressing questions. Read on to learn more!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]What's the best way to lighten dark grey hair?

  1. Get highlights to lighten the color and add dimension. The most fool-proof way to lighten hair is by using bleach. Grey hair is fragile, though, so bleaching your whole head isn't ideal. Bleached highlights are the way to go if you want to subtly lighten your hair and add natural-looking dimension without damaging it.[1]
Lighten Dark Grey Hair Step 1.jpg
    • You can do your own highlights at home using a bleach kit from a drug or beauty supply store. If you've never done highlights before, you might want to head to the salon for your first time.
    • Highlighted grey hair doesn't need root touch-ups as often as pigmented hair, which is a big plus![2]

[Edit]What if I want to dramatically lighten dark grey hair?

  1. Bleach all of your hair and use a silver toner to adjust the color. Apply bleach to get rid of all pigment—you want your hair to be almost white for this. Then, wash your hair with a silver toning shampoo to introduce gorgeous light grey or silver pigments. Use the shampoo every 2-3 weeks to maintain your new color![3]
Lighten Dark Grey Hair Step 2.jpg
    • If you want a sparkling light grey color, use silver toning shampoo. If you want light grey without the metallic pigments, look for a toning shampoo in a shade like "slate."[4]

[Edit]Can I dye dark grey hair to make it lighter and silvery?

  1. Yes, apply a high-lift permanent or semi-permanent silver hair dye. Read the instructions for specifics, but you usually saturate your hair with the dye just like you would any other colored dye. Leave it on for the recommended amount of time, rinse it out thoroughly, and follow up with moisturizing conditioner.[5]
Lighten Dark Grey Hair Step 3.jpg
    • "High-lift" means the dye can lighten hair 1-2 shades without bleaching it first. They usually have shade names like "Silver Fox" or "Icy Blonde."[6]

[Edit]Can I brighten grey hair without using dye or bleach?

  1. Yes, use a silver toning shampoo at home once a week. Grey hair looks darker when it gets dull and brassy. Silver toning shampoo deposits pigments on your hair to enhance and brighten the color, but it doesn't have dye or bleach in it. You apply toning shampoo exactly like normal shampoo, so it's super easy![7]
Lighten Dark Grey Hair Step 4.jpg
    • Purple toning shampoo can also brighten grey hair, especially if there are yellow tones in there.[8][9]
    • Each product is different, so read the instructions to find out how often you need to use the shampoo.
  2. Visit a salon if you want a more intense toning treatment. In-salon toning treatments are more pigmented than at-home toning shampoos. If you want a more dramatic color boost, make an appointment with your favorite stylist and explain the color you want to achieve with toner.[10]

[Edit]How do I brighten grey hair naturally?

  1. Do an apple cider vinegar rinse once a week to enhance the color. Mix of apple cider vinegar with 1 gallon (3.75 l) of water. Hop in the shower and lather up your hair with regular shampoo. Then, rinse out the shampoo with the vinegar/water mixture.[11]
Lighten Dark Grey Hair Step 5.jpg
    • Be sure to work the mixture through your hair and rinse thoroughly with clean water! Follow up with conditioner as you normally would.

[Edit]How do I make my grey hair look shinier?

  1. Use clear or ice blonde hair gloss once a month. Clear glossing products don't deposit any color, but they do make hair look extra shiny, seal in moisture, and smooth out the shaft.[12] Semi-permanent glosses deposit silvery or ice blonde pigments to refresh and brighten the color while also boosting shine.[13]
Lighten Dark Grey Hair Step 6.jpg
    • Instructions vary by brand, so be sure to read the packaging insert for more information. Generally, though, you apply and rinse them out just like hair dye.
  2. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo once a week. Build-up on your hair makes it look dull; a clarifying shampoo strips out that unwanted build-up and leaves you with clean, shiny locks. Apply clarifying shampoo, lather it up, and rinse it out thoroughly just like you would normal shampoo.[14]
    • Build-up is totally normal! It's usually caused by hard water, pollution, and styling products.

How to Wire a Doorbell

Posted: 21 Apr 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Whether you're replacing an old doorbell or installing a new one, wiring a doorbell is actually much easier than you may think. A doorbell is powered by a doorbell transformer, which needs to be professionally installed so it can safely and properly draw power from your home's electrical system. But, if the doorbell chimes and transformers are functioning, wiring the doorbell itself is just a matter of hooking them up correctly!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Replacing an Existing Doorbell

  1. Shut off power to the area at the breaker box. Locate your breaker box in your garage, basement, or on the side of your home. Use the diagram on the inside of the door panel or use the labels to find the switch that controls power to the front of your home. Flip the switch to turn off the power.[1]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 1 Version 3.jpg
    • Make sure the power is turned off by flipping a light switch near the door where you're installing the doorbell.
    • It's very important that you shut off the power to avoid shocking yourself.
  2. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the doorbell. Locate the screws mounting the doorbell to the outer wall or door casing of your home. Take a screwdriver or power drill and remove the screws to allow access to wiring on the backside of the doorbell.[2]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 2 Version 3.jpg
    • Don't try to pull off the doorbell yet or you could damage the wires.
  3. Disconnect the wires with a screwdriver and remove the doorbell. Look on the backside of the doorbell to find the wires connected to it. Take your screwdriver and loosen the terminal screws holding the wires in place. Slide the wires out of the terminals and remove the old doorbell.[3]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • Don't yank or force the wires so you don't accidentally damage or strip them.
  4. Bend the top wire to remember which one is which. The doorbell has 2 wires connected to it, 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom, and it's important that you remember which one is which so you can hook up the new one properly. Take the top wire and bend the end of it so you can tell them apart.[4]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 4 Version 3.jpg
    • Sometimes, the wires may be different colors, but it's common for them to be too similar to tell apart.
  5. Reconnect the wires to the terminals on your new doorbell. Remove the new doorbell from its packaging and locate the terminals on the backside. Connect the top wire to the upper terminal and the bottom wire to the lower one. Use your screwdriver to tighten the terminals so the wires are held securely.[5]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 5 Version 3.jpg
    • The upper wire connects the doorbell to the transformer that provides power to it and the bottom wire connects it to the chimes that sound when you press the button.
  6. Flip on the breaker and screw the doorbell it into place. Restore power to the area by flipping the switch back to its original position. Press the doorbell button to see if it works. If it does, use your screwdriver or a drill to fasten the doorbell to your wall or door casing using the screws that came with it.[6]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • The packaging of the doorbell should contain screws for you to use, but if it doesn't, you can use screws that fit into the screw holes on the doorbell.
    • If the doorbell chimes don't sound, they may be damaged. You can replace your doorbell chimes if they're damaged or faulty. However, if there's an electrical issue, you may want to contact a professional electrician.

[Edit]Connecting a Doorbell to the Transformer

  1. Flip the breaker switch to cut off power to the area. Before you begin working, locate your breaker box in your garage, basement, or on the side of your home. Flip the switch that controls power to the area that you're installing your doorbell so you can work safely.[7]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 7 Version 3.jpg
    • Use the diagram on the inside door panel of the breaker box or look for a label on the switches to find the right one. For instance, if you're wiring a doorbell to your front door, flip off the switch that controls power there.
    • Try turning on lights in the area to make sure the power is shut off.
  2. Locate the doorbell transformer in the outlet box near the door. A doorbell transformer is an electrical component that literally transforms power from a higher voltage to a lower one to power your doorbell and chimes. It's a small, metal box with 2 terminals and is usually located in an outlet box near the front door. Open up outlet boxes or look beneath them to find the transformer.[8]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 8 Version 3.jpg
    • If the transformer box isn't located in an outlet box, check near your breaker box for it. It could be attached to the top or bottom of it.[9]
    • If your doorbell transformer is faulty or damaged, you can replace it yourself. But, if you don't have one installed yet, have a professional electrician do the job is it's done properly and safely.
  3. Connect the transformer to the top terminal with 16 AWG wire. 16 AWG wire is a thin gauge of wire that can easily handle the voltage needed to power your doorbell. Strip away about of the sheathing with a wire stripper or a knife to expose the wires. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw on the top terminal of the transformer. Slide the exposed wire beneath the terminal screw and then tighten it so it's secure. Then, connect the other end of the wire to the top terminal of your doorbell the same way.[10]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 9 Version 3.jpg
    • You can drill a hole in your wall to thread the wire to connect the terminal to the doorbell or cover the wire with a cord cover.
    • Make sure the terminal screws are tightly secured so the wires are connected and won't come out of place.
    • You can find 16 AWG wire at your local hardware store, electrical supply store, or by ordering it online.
  4. Attach 16 AWG wire from the bottom terminal to the chimes. Locate your doorbell chimes, which are usually on the wall in the front hall or living room near the front door. Use 16 AWG wire and strip away about of the sheathing with wire strippers or a knife so the wires are exposed. Use a screwdriver to loosen the terminal screw above the terminal labeled "Front," slide the wire beneath it, and then tighten the screw. Connect the other end of the wire to the bottom terminal of your doorbell.[11]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 10 Version 3.jpg
    • Thread the wire through your wall to connect your chimes to your doorbell, or cover the wire with a cord cover so it's hidden from view.
    • Your transformer and chimes should already be connected from when your transformer was installed.
    • The terminal labeled "Front" is for the front door. If you're installing a second doorbell, attach the wire to the terminal labeled "Back."
  5. Restore the power and screw the doorbell onto the wall. Once everything is connected, flip the breaker switch back on to restore the power. Press the doorbell button to make sure it's working, and use a screwdriver or a power drill to fasten the doorbell to the outside wall or door casing of your home to finish the job.[12]
    Wire a Doorbell Step 11 Version 3.jpg

[Edit]Video

[Edit]Tips

  • If there's a problem with the wiring of your doorbell transformer, contact a professional electrician. You can replace a transformer, but if the wiring itself is faulty, it needs to be handled by a pro.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Double, even triple check to make sure the power is cut off in the area you're wiring your doorbell to avoid accidentally electrocuting yourself.
