IMDb TV app finally arrives on iOS and Android Posted: 05 Aug 2021 02:59 PM PDT Amazon's free streaming service IMDb TV now has its own dedicated app for the iPhone, iPad, and Android after launching on other major platforms earlier this year. IMDb TV is a dedicated hub for free, ad-supported movies and series as well as its own dedicated originals produced by Amazon Studios. Previously, you could find IMDb TV's content slate in the primary IMDb app, but a standalone streaming app for the service was not available for iOS and Android. A spokesperson told The Verge the content is still available to stream through IMDb, but the new IMDb TV app was "designed for the streaming experience." IMDb TV's content slate is quite good, even if its originals have struggled to make as much of a splash as titles from larger... |
Bill Gates admits meetings with Jeffrey Epstein were a ‘huge mistake’ Posted: 05 Aug 2021 01:54 PM PDT Bill Gates said that spending time with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was "a huge mistake" in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper. The interview covered Gates' relationship with Epstein, which he says was an attempt to get "billions for philanthropy," as well as Gates' alleged workplace misbehavior at Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Gates' story regarding his relationship with Epstein hasn't changed much since their meetings came to light. In 2019, he told The Wall Street Journal that he had met Epstein, but "didn't have any business relationship or friendship with him." A month later, The New York Times quoted a spokesperson for Gates, who said that Gates "regrets ever meeting with Epstein and... |
Tesla reportedly paid $1 million to former employee who said supervisors called him a racist slur Posted: 05 Aug 2021 01:46 PM PDT A former Tesla employee won a $1 million award from the automaker after an arbitrator found the company failed to prevent his supervisors from calling him a racial slur, Bloomberg Law reported. Melvin Berry, who is Black, was hired at Tesla's plant in Alameda, California in 2015. He said a supervisor called him the N-word, then retaliated by forcing him to work longer hours and do more physically demanding work when Berry confronted him. Tesla has denied the allegations. Arbitrator Elaine Rushing said in a May 12th ruling that Tesla was liable for the harassment Berry described, according to Bloomberg. "Case law is clear that one instance of a supervisor directing the N-word at a subordinate is sufficient to constitute severe... |
Virgin Galactic reopens ticket sales starting at $450K per seat Posted: 05 Aug 2021 01:39 PM PDT Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic is reopening ticket sales for its SpaceShipTwo spaceplane, the space tourism firm announced Thursday in its second-quarter earnings release. The starting price: $450,000, an expected increase from the roughly $200,000 price point the company had years ago, before it closed sales. The ticket reopening comes on the heels of Branson's successful flight in July to the edge of space aboard SpaceShipTwo, Virgin Galactic's flagship space tourism vehicle that can carry four passengers some 53 miles high for a few minutes of weightlessness. That mission, called Unity 22, was a key milestone test of the rocket-plane before Virgin starts flying individual customers in late 2022. |
Twitter Spaces adds co-host option to help moderate and manage rooms Posted: 05 Aug 2021 01:21 PM PDT Twitter is updating Spaces to allow hosts to designate up to two co-hosts for its social audio rooms, making it easier for hosts of the audio space to help manage and moderate conversations. Once invited, co-hosts have almost all the same moderation and managing privileges as the main host: they can speak, invite other members of the room to speak, pin tweets, boot people from the room, and more. There are a few limitations, though: only the main host can invite or remove other users as co-hosts — one co-host can't invite a second one, for example. Co-hosts also can't end the room; only the original host can. The co-host feature also expands the number of participants that can talk at once in a Space: now... |
Apple reveals new efforts to fight child abuse imagery Posted: 05 Aug 2021 01:02 PM PDT In a briefing on Thursday afternoon, Apple confirmed previously reported plans to deploy new technology within iOS, macOS, watchOS, and iMessage that will detect potential child abuse imagery, but clarified crucial details from the ongoing project. For devices in the US, new versions of iOS and iPadOS rolling out this fall have "new applications of cryptography to help limit the spread of CSAM [child sexual abuse material] online, while designing for user privacy." The project is also detailed in a new "Child Safety" page on Apple's website. The most invasive and potentially controversial implementation is the system that performs on-device scanning before an image is backed up in iCloud. From the description, scanning does not occur... |
Instagram scammers figured out a way to get paid for banning people Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:15 PM PDT Instagram scammers have developed a lucrative "banning" racket, according to a new report from Motherboard. For around $60, some scammers will get banned whatever Instagram account you choose, friend or foe, and often the scammers make even more money on the backend by helping the targeted users regain access to their accounts. The process, according to interviews and material reviewed by Motherboard, involves using a verified account to impersonate a target (their name, photo, bio), and then reporting the target as an impersonator to get them banned. Apparently, as long as the target has a human in their profile picture the method works. Motherboard writes that other users they spoke to also had... |
Amazon’s Halo Band can share your heart rate to other apps and workout equipment Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:10 PM PDT Amazon is updating its Halo fitness band today with the ability to share live heart rate information with third-party devices and fitness apps over BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). The company is currently partnered with NordicTrack for its iFit service, along with Openfit and CLMBR. Live heart rate has been available to view since launch in the Live tab of the Halo app, but connecting it to display in other apps and devices is just as easy. Amazon says you can turn on heart rate sharing by going to the Halo app's Settings, selecting Heart Rate Sharing, switching it to on, and then following the on-screen prompts to share your heart rate with the other app or device. |
The Xbox Series X is available online now at Walmart (Update: sold out) Posted: 05 Aug 2021 11:59 AM PDT Update August 5th, 4:07 PM ET: The Xbox Series X is no longer in stock at Walmart and the rolling restocks appear to have concluded. Microsoft's $500 Xbox Series X is available online for delivery through Walmart. It's also offering both the PS5 disc-based console and the digital version. The pricier and more powerful Series X that has a disc drive and 1TB of storage has been almost as tough to find as the PlayStation 5, so this restock is very welcome news. If this is your first time jumping into the ring, there are a few bits of advice that might lead to success for you. Don't leave the site if the console appears to sell out immediately. Walmart usually releases stock in 10-minute intervals, with the next being at 3:50PM, 4PM, and so... |
