FCC pauses 180-day clock on T-Mobile and Sprint merger for additional review Posted: 11 Sep 2018 05:11 PM PDT The Federal Communications Commission announced today that it will pause the so-called shot clock on its 180-day review period for the Sprint and T-Mobile merger. The shot clock in question is an informal six-month deadline for approval from when the merger was first announced (again) in April of this year. The FCC says it now "additional time is necessary to allow for thorough staff and third-party review of newly submitted and anticipated modeling." The letter is penned by David Lawrence, the director of the T-Mobile / Sprint Transaction Task Force, and Donald Stockdale, the chief of Wireless Telecommunication Bureau. The two companies, when... |
Verizon will launch 5G home internet service starting October 1st Posted: 11 Sep 2018 02:00 PM PDT Verizon's 5G broadband internet service will go live later this fall, with installations starting on October 1st in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento, the company announced today. This marks the first 5G commercial service to launch in the US, and it sees Verizon make good on its promise to do so in November 2017. Verizon is calling it simply 5G Home. This isn't true mobile 5G, which will be the more impactful rollout of the new internet speed standard that was finalized last December when all networks and phone manufacturers support it. But theoretically, it should bring faster broadband speeds for home internet that are on par with, or at least in the range of, gigabit fiber networks. It also helps Verizon in its... |
Popular Twitch streamer says someone shot at his house twice in a week Posted: 11 Sep 2018 01:29 PM PDT Guy Beahm, best known as the boisterous PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds streamer Dr. Disrespect, abruptly stopped his Twitch broadcast today following what he says was an attempted shooting at his house. News of this apparent shooting spread primarily due to Beahm's live stream, where he can be seen playing Call of Duty only to leave his station following an unknown noise. He breaks character and says, "someone shot at our house. Broke the fucking upstairs window. This is the second shot. Someone shot yesterday at our fucking house." Before the broadcast ends, Beahm is visibly upset, and yells, "you pussy" at whoever perpetrated the apparent drive-by shooting. Details are scarce at the moment, but as Polygon reports, authorities in... |
Plex shutters its cloud service after months of technical issues Posted: 11 Sep 2018 12:56 PM PDT Personal media player Plex told its users today that it's shutting down its Plex Cloud service at the end of November, as spotted by Variety. The Plex Cloud service has had multiple technical issues and has been in maintenance mode for a few months. The company shared an email it sent customers with The Verge that said "after a lot of investigation and thought, we haven't found a solution capable of delivering a truly first class Plex experience to Plex Cloud users at a reasonable cost." It continued, "While we are super bummed about the impact this will have on our happy Cloud users, ending support for it will allow us to focus on improving core functionality, adding new features and content." |
Amazon will sell live, seven-foot Christmas trees this year Posted: 11 Sep 2018 12:50 PM PDT In a sign of how far Amazon's shipping operation has come, the company will be selling and delivering seven-foot Christmas trees to customers this holiday season. And yes, they'll be eligible for Prime shipping. According to The Associated Press, Amazon will start selling the trees sometime in November, letting buyers pick between Douglas firs, Norfolk Island pines, and other options. A seven-foot Fraser fir (sourced from a North Carolina farm) will go for $115. The trees will ship in a large box, but Amazon isn't including water or anything extra in there. Apparently, each tree will be sent out within 10 days of being cut down, so the company expects they'll make it through the shipping process just fine before eventually drying out... |
The Logitech Crayon is a good Apple Pencil substitute that makes some compromises Posted: 11 Sep 2018 12:32 PM PDT At its education event in Chicago earlier this year, Apple announced a $49 Logitech Crayon that was only available exclusively to schools and educators. As of last week, Apple has changed its tune, and the Crayon is now available for the rest of us at $69.99. The question of "which stylus to get" between the Logitech Crayon and Apple Pencil is really only an issue if you have the latest $329 iPad, which is the only iPad the Crayon is compatible with. Though it can be seen as a cheaper Apple Pencil alternative, it's the lack of pressure sensitivity that costs it the $30 difference. Yes, you heard that right, this $70 stylus doesn't have pressure sensitivity. It does, however, have tilt support, which lets you adjust line weight depending... |

eBay’s HeadGaze brings hands-free input to the iPhone X using ARKit Posted: 11 Sep 2018 12:14 PM PDT Today, eBay revealed a nifty new piece of augmented reality software that makes use of both the front-facing iPhone X camera and Apple's ARKit framework. By tracking head motions using the 3D sensors in the TrueDepth camera, which is the same hardware that enables Apple's Face ID unlock feature, eBay developed a way to transmit input commands by just moving your head. The system, which eBay is calling HeadGaze, seems to work similarly to eye tracking, although it would understandably be less precise than a fully featured eye-tracking kit. Given its primary business of helping people sell products online, eBay's demo video illustrates how HeadGaze can be used to do hands-free online shopping, and just glancing at certain parts of the... |
OkCupid now lets users define their pronouns Posted: 11 Sep 2018 11:24 AM PDT OkCupid users can now pick their pronouns. The company rolled out the new gender-expressive option yesterday, a feature that'll allow users to choose between he / him, she / her, and they / them. The options join the 22 gender and 13 sexual orientation choices already available to users. The pronouns will show up as a menu when users who identify as any gender other than man or woman sign up for the service. People who have a sexual orientation under the LGBTQ umbrella will also see the menu in their profiles, just not at sign up. Product designer Rowan Rosenthal, who uses the they / them pronouns, created the feature during OkCupid's hack week earlier this year. They tell The Verge that up until now, they always had awkward first date... |
Freaks is a thrilling science fiction film worth knowing nothing about Posted: 11 Sep 2018 10:33 AM PDT Welcome to Cheat Sheet, our brief breakdown-style reviews of festival films, VR previews, and other special event releases. This review comes from the Toronto International Film Festival. One of the upsides of our wired world is that it's easy to get information. Anyone with a smartphone who wants to know how to gap a spark plug, make 12 different kinds of quiche, avoid traffic on the way to a destination, or charge up a phone can readily find that information in seconds. But there are complementary downsides: personal information about us is similarly easy to find and exploit, and it can be hard to avoid accessing an endless wave of demoralizing news that in aggregate, makes the world look and feel worse than it is. But there's another... |
