LG’s audio-focused Google Assistant smart display is out now Posted: 20 Nov 2018 08:47 PM PST LG was one of the hardware partners on board when Google announced its new smart displays platform back at CES this year, and now the first product is finally here. The display, variously and confusingly referred to in the press release as the "LG AI Smart Display," the "LG XBOOM WK9 Smart Display," and the "LG XBOOM AI ThinQ model WK9," can be bought from various retailers in the US. LG is aiming to differentiate its smart display by focusing on sound quality, partnering with Meridian Audio to tune the pair of 20W speakers. The display is 8 inches across and "HD" resolution (probably 720p), while there's a 5-megapixel camera up top for video calling. LG has previously worked with Meridian on some voice-only Google Assistant products. T... |
Google Assistant just got much better and more convenient on iOS thanks to Siri Shortcuts Posted: 20 Nov 2018 05:29 PM PST Google is doing everything it can to make Assistant feel less like a second-class citizen on iOS. Siri is so ingrained in Apple's platform that competing virtual assistants can't quite match its convenience or the speed of accessing it, but Google is taking advantage of every tool at its disposal to get closer. You can already add an Assistant widget to the left of your home screen (or lock screen). And with an update released today, Google Assistant is introducing support for Siri Shortcuts. So you can record a phrase like the usual "OK Google" or "Hey Google" and from then on, whenever you say that to Siri, the Assistant app will open and immediately start listening for your question or command. If your iPhone is... |
Apple might help bring veterans’ medical records into the modern era Posted: 20 Nov 2018 04:19 PM PST Apple is reportedly in talks with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to provide veterans access to electronic medical records on the iPhone, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Such a deal could help Apple make significant progress in its attempts to partner with more medical institutions and turn its mobile operating system into a repository for the storing and sharing of health data. The company first began discussing the plan with the agency last year, per emails seen by the WSJ, and it's unclear how the project has since progressed. However, it appears that Apple could be tapped to migrate medical records for as many as 9 million US veterans to dedicated iOS software, in order to simplify hospital visits and... |
Netflix adds improved playback controls and a ‘next episode’ button to iOS app Posted: 20 Nov 2018 02:51 PM PST In a move that's sure to optimize marathon binges, Netflix has released the latest version of its iOS app with some pretty useful updates. The new version of the app adds forward and back 10-second buttons, which you can also control by double tapping the left or right side of the screen. Until now, if you were used to YouTube's playback features and tried to do this on Netflix's app, it would annoyingly zoom into the screen. Now that Netflix's playback options are the same as YouTube's, there'll be less frustrating moments with the app. The play / pause button is also bigger now. The new update also adds a row of labels at the bottom, which brings up the Episodes list, the Audio & Subtitles menu, and a... |
FCC proposes doubling speed requirement for rural broadband Posted: 20 Nov 2018 02:46 PM PST The Federal Communications Commission is looking to raise the minimum rural broadband speed standard to 25 Mbps, more than doubling the current requirement. In general, this would boost speeds in rural areas that receive broadband through government-subsidized programs. Those government subsidies come from the FCC's Connect America Fund (CAF). The program is paid for through phone bill fees which the Commission then dips into in order to pass funds onto carriers so they can build networks in less populated, rural areas around the country. This increased standard will only apply to networks that are built in the future, however, so the FCC will continue to use different incentives to get ISPs to increase the speeds of existing networks. ... |
YouTube will stream The Lego Movie free as an ad for the sequel Posted: 20 Nov 2018 02:43 PM PST The length of ads on YouTube can be distressing, but the question is whether people would be okay sitting through a 100-minute commercial if it were actually a full-length movie. YouTube and Warner Bros. Pictures are teaming up for a one-day promotional event that will let users watch The Lego Movie in its entirety during Black Friday. The promotion is to stir up hype for the film's sequel, The Lego Movie 2 — The Second Part. YouTube viewers will only have 24 hours to watch the movie for free, and can do so by clicking on a trailer for The Lego Movie 2 and clicking on an option to watch The Lego Movie. Since the movie is itself the advertisement, it will play without commercial breaks. Although this is the first time an entire movie... |
Throw out your romaine, it could be contaminated with E. coli Posted: 20 Nov 2018 02:43 PM PST Romaine lettuce is making people dangerously ill again, prompting public health officials in the US and Canada to issue nationwide alerts: don't eat any form of romaine lettuce, and toss any romaine you have. If you don't know what kind of lettuce is in your fridge, throw it out. Even if you had grand plans for a romaine-focused side dish for Thanksgiving — you know who you are — don't take any chances. So far, 32 people in the US and 18 in Canada have been infected with a dangerous strain of E. coli that produces toxins called Shiga toxins and can sometimes cause kidney failure. Other symptoms can range from bloody diarrhea and vomiting to a low fever. So far, no one has died, but the outbreak has sent 13 people in the US and five in... |
Ford dreams up a way to kill ‘new car smell’ Posted: 20 Nov 2018 02:15 PM PST Car companies often tweak their vehicles for different markets in order to comply with regulations or serve varying customer tastes. But Ford is apparently considering a novel change to cars bound for the Chinese market: removing the "new car smell." Yes, the fresh but sometimes dizzying smell of a brand-new car might be popular in the US, but it's apparently off-putting in China. More than 10 percent of drivers in the country complain about aggressively smelly new cars, making it a "top industry problem," Brent Gruber, a senior director at J.D. Power, told the Detroit Free Press. "To put that in context, it is nearly double the problem rate of the second most prevalent problem, excessive fuel consumption." Ford spelled out its solution... |
Apple’s new holiday ad is a heartwarming, Pixar-inspired animated short Posted: 20 Nov 2018 01:51 PM PST Apple's holiday commercials are an annual tradition, designed to evoke the strongest of emotions in those who watch the lengthy ads play out. This year's commercial manages to accomplish that feat, but it looks a little different: it's fully animated. The commercial feels more like a Disney Pixar short, or a Coca-Cola ad than it does a traditional Apple commercial. There isn't too much product placement from the company save for a MacBook covered in personalized stickers that appears from time to time over the course of two-and-a-half minutes. "Share Your Gifts" finds its heart not in Apple's MacBook line, but in the spirit of giving a little piece of ourselves to our friends and families this holiday season. The irony of an extended... |
