UK police arrest two in connection with Gatwick Airport drone shutdown

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 12:34 PM PST

UK police have arrested two individuals in connection with flight disruptions at London Gatwick Airport. The pair, a 47-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman were arrested late on Friday, according to the Sussex Police.

Air traffic at Gatwick, England's second largest airport, was disrupted when a drone was spotted flying in the area on Wednesday, prompting the airport to suspend flights through Friday. Flights were diverted to other airports, and authorities ended up bringing in the British Army, which media reports say set up an Israeli-built drone defense system called a "Drone Dome," designed to intercept the device's radio signals. Flights resumed at the airport on Friday.

Sussex Police did not identify the individuals, other than...

Microsoft reportedly working on Xbox and Windows webcams for 2019

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 11:00 AM PST

Microsoft is reportedly planning to release new webcams in 2019 for Windows 10 and Xbox One. Thurrott reports that two new webcams are on the way, with one designed to bring Windows Hello facial recognition to any Windows 10 PC. The other will reportedly work with the Xbox One and bring back the Kinect feature that let users automatically sign in by moving in front of the camera. This should work with multiple accounts and family members.

Microsoft's Surface chief, Panos Panay, hinted earlier this year in an interview with The Verge that the company is looking at releasing Surface-branded webcams. "Look at the camera on Surface Hub 2, note it's a USB-C-based camera, and the idea that we can bring a high fidelity camera to an experience,...

7 new trailers you should watch this week

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:00 AM PST

As the leader of The Verge's 2005 Pride & Prejudice fan club, I took the important step this week of watching the 1995 film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, which apparently was shot at a time when cinematography didn't exist.

It's no 2005 Pride & Prejudice, but it's still a great movie even if only because it's still Jane Austen. I also love how, a decade earlier, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman played their love-interest analogs exactly as air-headed (Ferrars / Bingley) and solemn (Brandon / Darcy) as the later film's stars.

Check out seven trailers from this week below.

Hellboy

The Hellboy series is being rebooted with a much more comedic tone, and Stranger Things' sheriff, David Harbour, has taken over the lead role, providing a...

Apple VP says 2018 iPad Pro ‘meets or exceeds’ quality and flatness standards

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 09:00 AM PST

An example of a bend in a fresh-out-of-the-box 2018 iPad Pro.

Days after Apple confirmed to The Verge that some of its new iPad Pro devices might come with a slight bend or curve out of the box, a senior executive has reiterated that the company stands by the tablet and its premium build quality.

Dan Riccio, Apple's VP of hardware engineering, offered the most informative response yet on the matter late Thursday night when he responded to a customer email, saying that the 2018 iPad Pro "meets or exceeds all of Apple's high quality standards of design and precision manufacturing. We've carefully engineered it and every part of the manufacturing process is precisely measured and controlled." 9to5Mac published the email in its entirety, and MacRumors says it has verified its authenticity. 9to5Mac...

Aiaiai’s Pipe 2 earphones serve up a fresh flavor of USB-C goodness

Aiaiai Pipe 2.0.

After reviewing the excellent OnePlus Type-C Bullets, I've struggled to think of a good reason for other USB-C buds to even exist. You can't get much cheaper than their $20 asking price, and you can't get more comfortable. But there's always room for sonic and hardware improvements, and that's where Denmark's Aiaiai comes in with its Pipe 2.0 USB-C earphones. At $40, they're double the price of a pair of USB-C Bullets, and they justify their premium with thicker, sturdier construction and a more lucid and engaging sound.

I've been testing a pair of the Pipe 2 for a few days, and, at the risk of undermining my reputation as a stickler for sound quality, I like their sound just as much as I like that of the OnePlus USB-C Bullets. The two...

Facebook suspends accounts that used disinformation tactics in Alabama’s special election

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 07:51 AM PST

Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that a group of "Democratic tech experts" used Russian-style disinformation tactics during Alabama's 2017 special election in an attempt to splinter support for Republican candidate Roy Moore. Now, The Washington Post reports that Facebook has suspended accounts used by five people involved in the project.

The Times report lays out what occurred in Alabama last year: the project's participants started a Facebook page where they posed as conservative Alabama voters. They encouraged followers to cast write-in votes, and bought retweets on Twitter to amplify their message. According to a report seen by the Times, the project's authors say that they "orchestrated an elaborate 'false flag'...

One Kickstarter campaign allegedly had $100,000 stolen, but still shipped its keyboards

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 07:00 AM PST

In our monthly Rise and Fall column we look back at crowdfunded gadgets that reached their funding goal. Months or year later, how are they doing? If they've shipped to backers, are they still supporting the gadget? If they haven't shipped, why haven't they met their shipping deadline? We hope this column will give us all a place to understand.

On its quest to make a "better keyboard," Keyboardio raised more than $650,000 — then found itself scammed out of $100,000, according to the company's founders. It could have been an existential problem for such a small company, but Keyboardio has managed to weather the setback and now has advice for others on how to avoid running into the same scam.

What's today's gadget and what does it do?

Nearly one year after Hawaii missile fiasco, emergency reforms are still on the table

Posted: 22 Dec 2018 06:12 AM PST

When a false missile alert was sent to residents in Hawaii in January, it caused a massive panic. In the immediate aftermath, the message — which warned of an incoming missile attack — drove a news cycle, led to serious criticism of state officials, and raised questions about safeguards in place to prevent similar mishaps in the future. As the one-year anniversary of the alert approaches, there have been some reforms to the system, but others are still only being handled now.

Soon after the incident, investigations faulted human error and poor software design for the incident, and state emergency officials resigned in the wake of the scandal. The state pledged to overhaul its system, and since then, there have been some pushes for change...
