The FDA shakeup could stall e-cigarette regulations

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 06:17 PM PST

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb's sudden resignation yesterday has public health experts worried that progress on e-cigarette regulations could stall, or even stop.

The news comes just a few days after Gottlieb reportedly brought a proposal for e-cigarette flavoring restrictions to the White House, according to Axios. His resignation — just as his agency was stepping up regulations — is worrying for people closely tracking the future of tobacco control. "I don't think that anyone knows for sure what this means," says Desmond Jenson, an attorney with the Public Health Law Center at the Mitchell Hamline School of Law, says in an email to The Verge. "It doesn't feel like it will be good news."

If you've been wondering when it'll be safe to play Anthem on your PlayStation 4 — you know, given the reports of some PS4s spontaneously powering down in the middle of a game — developer BioWare now has an answer. Two answers, actually.

BioWare's online gaming boss Chad Robertson has officially tweeted that the team has successfully identified "several causes" why some consoles might be crashing, and will fix some of those issues in a patch next week.

Huawei is suing the US for banning the government from using its equipment

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 06:00 PM PST

Huawei is suing the United States over policies banning the use of the company's equipment by the government. It's the latest escalation in a continuing battle over Huawei's position in the US.

The suit alleges that policies passed by Congress last year as part of a defense spending package unconstitutionally singled out Huawei for punishment. When Congress passed the legislation, it included provisions blocking Chinese-made telecommunications equipment from being used in federal networks, effectively also preventing major government contractors from using Huawei equipment. The measure specifically named Huawei and ZTE, as well as some other Chinese companies.

The company says that the measure breached a legal standard against making a...

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 05:21 PM PST

Nintendo's getting into virtual reality, but not in the way you might expect. Today, the gaming giant announced the latest in its Labo line of DIY cardboard accessories, which turns the Nintendo Switch into a makeshift VR kit.

As with previous Labo sets, there are a few options to choose from. The main VR kit costs $79.99 and includes six different cardboard kits to build, including VR goggles, a blaster, a camera, and an... elephant, as well as a screen holder and "safety cap." For those looking to spend a bit less, there's also a basic starter kit that includes just the goggles and blaster for $39.99. Additional accessories like the elephant can be purchased late in $20 sets. The kits will include Labo software, which features games,...

Facebook’s pivot to privacy has huge implications — if it’s real

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 04:35 PM PST

By 2015, Mark Zuckerberg had grown uncomfortable with his messaging history. His old instant messages had gotten him into trouble in the past — people are still tweeting juvenile IMs from his college days — and the 2014 Sony hack had made him more concerned about his potential exposure. And so Facebook's CEO took a step then unavailable to any of the 2.2 billion other users of his platform: he snapped his fingers, Thanos-like, and the messages disappeared.

Some of Zuckerberg's correspondents noticed that their old conversations had suddenly become one-sided, and eventually told TechCrunch's Josh Constine, who broke the story last April. There have been plenty of Facebook data privacy scandals over the past couple of years, but none...

Anthem’s best bug yet turns level one guns into the strongest weapons in the game

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 03:43 PM PST

EA's online shooter Anthem is building a reputation for featuring some pretty perplexing bugs, and the latest discovery from the game's intrepid community may be the best one yet. As discovered by Reddit user YeetLordSupreme, the game's level one firearms — the most basic and supposedly weakest weapons in the game — are not just competitive with Anthem's best items, but in some cases even better.

Yes, that's right: the best guns in the game are the ones you start out with, regardless of what damage numbers you're seeing on the screen. YeetLordSupreme did numerous tests tracking the numbers of bullets required to best foes in the highest levels of Anthem's endgame portion, using both a level one gun and level 45 masterworked items —...

Google can now repair your broken Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 03:03 PM PST

Google has updated its US-only repair service to include the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL as being eligible for mail-in repair. The inclusion of its third-generation Pixel phones comes several months after their October 2018 launch. Until now, owners with broken Pixel 3 phones had to resort to third-party repair shops, like uBreakiFix. Walk-in services might be more convenient for some than mail-in support, but it's better to have more options for fixing your phone.

As noted by Android Police, Google's repair service landing page is in a confusing state, currently stating that the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are only eligible for walk-in services, even though that's not the case behind the scenes. According to a statement from Google, it's just...

The president just called the CEO of Apple ‘Tim Apple’

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 02:36 PM PST

Tim Cook is a pretty well-known figure in the business world. I know a lot of people don't care about computers and that's fine, but if you're in the industry or having some sort of professional interaction with him, I have to think people usually know his name going in.

And yet, at an American Workforce Policy Advisory Board meeting today, the president pretty unmistakably called Tim Cook "Tim Apple."

At first I thought I was just hearing things? Then I thought it might have been part of a trailing sentence like "Thank you Tim... Apple is doing great." But no, he stops pretty abruptly after saying Apple, and it really sounds like he thinks that's the last name.

I went through the trouble of transcribing what the president said, just to...

Facebook takes a shot at Apple in China, says it won’t store data in certain countries

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 01:35 PM PST

In a long manifesto about Facebook's future, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is willing to be banned in countries that object to its new focus on privacy, specifically the emphasis on secure data storage. That might sink any chance of Facebook operating in China, a huge market it's been flirting with entering for years. But it also might let Facebook claim some moral high ground over one of its competitors: Apple.

Zuckerberg described a vision for Facebook that's based on secure, encrypted, and ephemeral messaging — and one part of that vision is data storage. "I believe one of the most important decisions we'll make is where we'll build data centers and store people's sensitive data," he wrote. But he acknowledged that this might...

Amazon is shutting down all of its US kiosks in favor of expanding its physical stores

Posted: 06 Mar 2019 01:24 PM PST

Amazon is shutting down all of its US pop-up kiosks as it shifts its strategy toward growing other forms of physical stores. First reported by The Wall Street Journal, the company announced that it will be shuttering its pop-up kiosks, and all 87 mini-stores are expected to close by April 29th.

Amazon's pop-up stores have been operating since 2014, usually located inside malls as small kiosks selling devices like Echos, Kindles, and tablets. The kiosks have also operated inside Kohl's and Whole Foods stores, with new pop-ups opening up as recently as a few months ago. However, the sudden shutdowns show how abruptly the company is shifting its retail strategy toward expanding its larger physical stores and product offerings.
