Verizon’s new Just Kids plan has 5GB of LTE data and plenty of parental controls

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:56 PM PDT

Verizon has announced a new mobile data plan that it's positioning as "the first smartphone plan designed for kids." The Just Kids plan includes 5GB of monthly data and unlimited talk/text to 20 parent-approved contacts. It also bundles in Verizon's Smart Family Premium suite of parental controls, which usually costs an extra $9.99 per month. The plan has "safety mode" enabled, meaning kids can keep using data (at reduced speeds) after hitting the 5GB LTE limit without any additional charges or penalties. And video is restricted to 480p — just like Verizon's cheapest unlimited plan for adults.

The Smart Family Premium tool allows parents to set screen time limits, track the location of their kids, and put content filters in place....

New Apple ad romanticizes the beginnings of Apple’s circular pizza box

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:55 PM PDT

Apple made a pizza box? Yes indeed, and it makes a cameo appearance in a new 3-minute Apple commercial that the company uploaded to YouTube today, dubbed "Apple at Work — The Underdogs." An ad that — completely unrelated to the pizza box — is one of the funnier Apple ads we've seen in a while.

As you might be aware, Apple has quite a reputation for clever, powerful, heartwarming and timely commercials, even if a few of them have come out rather embarrassing. This one's definitely in the former camp, thanks to a snappy script, typically high production values, and some excellent comedic timing.

But as Apple developer Cabel Sasser notes on Twitter, it's the patented pizza box that really stands out for astute Apple fans:

Justice Department says attempts to prevent Netflix from Oscars eligibility could violate antitrust law

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:20 PM PDT

The US Department of Justice has sent a letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences warning that any attempts to bar or limit Netflix and other streaming services from Oscars eligibility might violate antitrust law, considering the Academy's membership includes studios and media conglomerates that compete with Netflix, Amazon, and others.

The letter, the existence and contents of which Variety reported exclusively earlier today, suggests that federal authorities are keeping a close eye on Hollywood after reports earlier this year that filmmakers and studios would seek rule changes designed to make it difficult for streaming services to qualify for Oscars. Instead, as director Steven Spielberg has reportedly proposed, these...

Ford’s Mustang-inspired EV will travel more than 300 miles on a full battery

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:04 PM PDT

Ford's first long-range electric vehicle — an SUV inspired by the Mustang muscle car due out in 2020 — will likely travel more than 300 miles on a single charge, the company announced Tuesday. The car was first teased at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, and has been in development under the codename "Mach 1."

Ford executives have often stated, as far back as 2017, that they hope to offer more than 300 miles in the company's first mass-market EV. (The company has sold shorter range all-electric Focus hatchbacks and Ranger trucks in the past.) With Tuesday's announcement, it appears that they'll do just that. Ford says the still-unnamed car will eclipse 600 kilometers, or about 370 miles, based on Europe's Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle...

Apple’s latest Clips update inches it closer to being a real video app

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:16 PM PDT

The latest update for Apple's Clips app adds a few new features that brings it closer to becoming a full-fledged mobile video-editing app. The most notable addition is the ability to add custom soundtracks directly to videos with songs created in GarageBand and other music apps. Previously, users were limited to built-in soundtracks and iTunes music tracks.

Clips, which is only available on iOS, launched in 2017 as a kind of iMovie for a new generation of creators, with built-in filters, stickers, and transitions. Today's update adds lots of small improvements, like the ability to share projects through AirDrop or email and save them to Files, as well as introducing more share extensions to upload to other cloud services.

Former Mozilla CTO files complaint against border patrol over warrantless phone search

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:11 PM PDT

Andreas Gal, the former CTO of Mozilla and a current employee of Apple, is filing a complaint against US customs agents who allegedly tried to intimidate him into handing over his phone and laptop passcodes. Gal and the American Civil Liberties Union are asking the Department of Homeland Security for an investigation of an incident last year, which Gal recounted in a blog post titled "No one should have to travel in fear." It's part of a protracted fight over warrantless searches at the US border, a practice that's become especially fraught after the Trump administration implemented more aggressive and invasive policies.

According to the ACLU's complaint, Customs and Border Protection agents in San Francisco International Airport stopped...

Chinese developers use GitHub to protest long work hours

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:45 PM PDT

Chinese tech workers are protesting long work hours, and they've taken the fight to GitHub. If you checked GitHub's trending list in recent days, you may have seen a repository called 996.ICU — a reference to working from 9AM to 9PM for six days a week, then being sent to an intensive care unit for exhaustion. Instead of code, the repository holds a collection of workplace grievances against China's biggest and most well-known tech companies, including Alibaba, Huawei, Bytedance, DJI, and others.

The original anonymous developer first posted the project on the Chinese social platform V2EX, saying that such an intense work schedule kept them from "resting and having time to speak to family members."

Anyone can contribute to the...

YouTube reportedly discouraged employees from reporting fake, toxic videos

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:34 PM PDT

For years, YouTube ignored its employees' pleas to address and take down toxic videos in a quest to boost engagement, reports Bloomberg. According to more than 20 former and current YouTube staffers, employees would offer proposals to curb the spread of videos that contained disturbing, extremist content, and / or conspiracy theories, but leadership was reportedly more interested in boosting engagement than heeding those warnings.

One proposal offered a way to keep content that was "close to the line" of violating policies on the platform but remove it from the recommended tab. YouTube rejected that suggestion in 2016, a former engineer said, and instead continued to recommend videos regardless of how controversial they were. According...

Sony is trying to avoid paying $10,000 to buy Crackle Plus domain name

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:21 PM PDT

Part of launching a streaming video service is owning the domain name with which most viewers can reliably expect to find the service via the web. For instance, it could be considered a smart move for Netflix to own, say, Netflix.com, or for HBO to own HBOGo.com. For Sony-owned Crackle, however, it appears getting ownership of the domain name behind its upcoming Crackle Plus premium offering is proving a bit difficult, if only because the gigantic mega-corporation doesn't feel like paying $10,000 to secure it from the person who already owns it, according to a report from Variety.

CracklePlus.com is owned by a Pakistan resident named Muhammad Abdullah, who registered it in October 2017. Without divining his intentions — Variety reached...

Google will require temp workers receive $15 minimum wage and parental leave

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:17 PM PDT

Google said today that it would require its extended, non-employee workforce in the United States receive comprehensive health care coverage, a $15 minimum wage, and 12 weeks of parental leave. The move follows protests from employees and other workers at Google who have pushed the company to offer more benefits.

Google relies on a massive staff of temporary, vendor, and contract workers, many of whom are supplied by third parties and aren't offered the same benefits as full Google employees. The disparity has led to calls for better conditions for the workers. Today, The Guardian reported that more than 900 employees have signed a letter supporting temporary workers whose contracts for work on...
