SpaceX just fired up the engine on its test Starship vehicle for the first time Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:50 PM PDT A test version of SpaceX's next-generation spacecraft, the Starship, successfully ignited its onboard engine for the first time today — though the vehicle didn't go for far. The ignition was a test known as a static fire, meant to try out the engine while the vehicle remained tethered to the Earth. However, today's test marked the first time this vehicle lit up its engine, and it could pave the way for short "hop" flights in the near future. This particular vehicle, referred to as "Starhopper," is meant to test out the technologies and basic design of the final Starship vehicle — a giant passenger spacecraft that SpaceX is making to take people to the Moon and Mars. The stainless steel Starship is supposed to launch into deep space on... |
Tesla is selling fewer cars, but says it has ‘sufficient’ cash Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:39 PM PDT Tesla's sales have fallen for the first time in nearly two years. The Silicon Valley automaker announced that it delivered 63,000 cars globally in the first quarter of 2019, about 50,900 of which were Model 3s. That represents a 31 percent decline in deliveries compared to the final quarter of 2018. The last time Tesla saw a quarter-to-quarter sales decline was in the first half of 2017 — just before the Model 3 went into production. As a result, "we expect Q1 net income to be negatively impacted," according to a company statement. The statement also said the carmaker had "sufficient cash on hand." The decrease in sales to the start the year will likely buoy critics who believe Tesla has exhausted demand for the Model 3 in North... |
Motorola Moto G7 and One lines are getting Google’s call screening feature Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:37 PM PDT One of the best new features for Android users is Google's call screening tech it first released in the US last fall, but it's only been available so far on Pixel phones. That changes soon, as Motorola has announced today that its G7 and One smartphone lines will be the first phones outside Google's Pixel family to get the feature. The feature, which launched first on the Pixel 3 and was later expanded to the original Pixel and the Pixel 2, uses software to automate the answering of the call and the gathering of information about who's calling and why. You initiate the feature by pressing the "screen call" button when you see an unrecognized call, and then you're given the information onscreen both in real time and in the the form of a... |
Your Tesla can now change lanes without asking permission Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:34 PM PDT Today, Tesla is taking a step closer to a true self-driving car future with a mode that entirely lets your car decide when to change lanes. (Yes, we've just entered a world where your car might pass other cars automatically.) Previously, if you punch in your destination, keep your hands on the steering wheel and feet near the pedals, your Tesla's optional "Navigate on Autopilot" mode would do its best to keep you on the freeway, proactively asking for confirmation before it makes any lane changes. But a new software update changes that. If the driver says they don't require the car to confirm a lane change, the car will... just change lanes. Here's how Tesla's new press release describes the change (bolding ours):

Tencent and Xiaomi may be censoring a GitHub page for airing worker grievances Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:56 PM PDT A trending and vastly expanding GitHub database where Chinese developers have been airing their workplace grievances may be at risk of censorship. A number of internet users in China are reporting seeing their access to the database cut off when using browsers offered by companies like Tencent, Alibaba, Xiaomi, and Qihoo 360, as first spotted by Abacus. There's no indication yet that these censorship efforts may have originated from government orders. Some of the companies that are reportedly blocking access to the GitHub repository are also the same ones being accused of encouraging their employees to work grueling 12-hour days, six days a week without sufficient overtime pay, a coincidence that Chinese developers have been quick to... |
Unknown Motorola phone with four cameras leaks Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:04 PM PDT The prevailing strategy in the mobile space as far as cameras go these days seems to be "more is always better," and leaks (courtesy of OnLeaks, posting at CashKaro) of a new, as yet unknown Motorola device featuring four rear shooters seem to indicate that the company is diving headfirst into the trend. Details at this stage are predictably slim, but we do know a few things: in addition to the plethora of cameras, the device will offer a 6.2-inch display with a teardrop notch (similar to Motorola's recent Moto G7) with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Also visible are a USB-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack, which is always appreciated in today's increasingly dongle-based world. There are basically two ways that phones have... |

Android Q’s second beta embraces foldable phones, multitasking Bubbles Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:24 PM PDT Google released its second Android Q developer preview today for all Pixel phones. They're mostly under-the-hood tweaks, but the update also helps get apps and games ready for the first wave of foldable phones, and it brings along Bubbles, Google's new take on multitasking that looks similar to Facebook Messenger's Chat Heads, which could change how Android looks and works depending on how it's implemented. See the animated GIF immediately above? That's Android Q's new foldable screen emulator for developers (and us) to see what today's apps and games might look like on actual foldable phones. Speaking of actual foldables, the emulator appears to target two rather familiar hardware configurations in particular: a 7.3-inch... |
Figuring out Apple’s TV plans with Recode’s Peter Kafka Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:21 PM PDT Will Apple's new foray into streaming be able to swim in the same waters as Netflix and Disney, or will it go the way of Verizon's Go90? Recode executive editor Peter Kafka and The Verge's editor-in-chief Nilay Patel discuss Apple's plan for streaming, news, and more. You can listen to the discussion in its entirety on The Vergecast right now. Below is a lightly edited excerpt from this interview regarding Apple's potential plans for streaming TV. Peter Kafka: So there is one product called the Apple TV app which also works on your box, but it also sits on your phone and is essentially a TV guide. Which, by the way, seems like a pretty good idea, if you look at a world where the bundle has been broken up or there's lots of different... |
Toyota opens up 24,000 hybrid car patents to other automakers Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:31 AM PDT Toyota will allow other companies to use nearly 24,000 patents related to its hybrid car technology, the Japanese automaker announced Wednesday. The patents will be available to license for royalty-free use until 2030, and Toyota will also offer consultation services for a fee. Toyota had previously licensed its hybrid technology to automakers like Nissan, Mazda, and Subaru before today's announcement. Toyota is the most prolific maker and seller of hybrid vehicles in the world, with about 80 percent of the market, according to Reuters. The automaker's also been at it for a really long time — its first hybrid, the Prius, debuted in Japan in 1997 and started its worldwide spread in 2000. Since then, Toyota has sold more than 13 million... |
