Bethesda will remove online login requirement from Doom re-releases Posted: 27 Jul 2019 01:45 PM PDT Bethesda says it'll get rid of the strange requirement that players must log into an online account before they play the newly re-released versions of Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3, which went live yesterday. Players quickly criticized Bethesda for the seemingly ridiculous limitation — the first of these games was released more than 25 years ago, at a time when there was obviously no internet requirement. The online login will be made optional in a coming update, Bethesda said today. The publisher said the requirement, which signed players into its BethesdaNet service, was included to let players participate in a program that let them unlock items in Doom Eternal, a game that isn't out yet. Bethesda now says the login "should be optional." ... |
Elon Musk says that Teslas will soon be able to stream Netflix and YouTube Posted: 27 Jul 2019 12:00 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Elon Musk has long touted the potential that the in-car displays found in Teslas have for drivers: they can not only provide information, but entertainment as well. To that end, he says that the cars will soon be able to stream video from Netflix and YouTube. Tesla has already unveiled games that drivers can play on the displays: in June, Bethesda studios announced at E3 that drivers would be able to play Fallout Shelter. Tesla has also released Cuphead and some classic Atari games, like Tempest, Pole Position, and Missile Command. On Friday, the company revealed that drivers would be able to play chess in the Tesla Arcade. The games only work while the car is parked, and players can use the steering wheel as a controller. The same is... |

8 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 27 Jul 2019 09:00 AM PDT Photo: Sony Pictures Marvel's Spider-Man films have been a standout for me in the MCU. What I think it comes down to is this: they're not about superhero stuff all that much. It's all grounded in Peter just trying to figure out life as a teenager, and his journey and failures as Spider-Man reflect that. Far From Home took a small step away from the very fun high school drama that grounded the first film in this series, but it still stayed rooted enough in that world that it felt more like a genre-infused twist on a road trip movie than a magical powers / save the world kind of film. These are also films that have understood that having a connection with the villain makes the whole story so much more tense and powerful. I will admit: I don't think the... |
iPad Pro (2018) tablets are up to $175 off, the cheapest prices yet Posted: 27 Jul 2019 08:00 AM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge It has been a few months since the iPad Pro (2018) had a big price drop, but you'll find the best prices happening now at Best Buy and Amazon. The 11-inch model (64GB, Wi-FI) is available at Best Buy or Amazon for $649.99. This is $150 off of the original price, beating the previous best price by $25. It's not much, but it's not nothing! If you want the bigger 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2019) with 64GB of storage, that one costs $824.99 at Best Buy. It's $175.99 off of the price you'd pay buying one directly from Apple, and like the 11-inch tablet, it's $25 lower than the best price we've seen. The iPad Pro tablets with more storage are cheaper, too, as are the Wi-Fi + LTE models. You can check out more options at Best Buy and Amazon. |
France will continue with its technology tax amidst tariff threat from US Posted: 27 Jul 2019 07:47 AM PDT french flag (flickr) France's finance minister says that it will continue to carry out a plan to tax technology firms, despite a threat of tariffs on French goods from US President Donald Trump, according to Reuters. The country's senate passed the controversial bill earlier this month, and it was signed into law by President Emmanuel Macron this week. The bill places a 3 percent tax on technology firms that earn more than €750 million ($834 million) in global revenue and €25 million in France, and would target the revenue that those companies earn in the country. According to The Washington Post, that would affect nearly 30 companies around the world, not just firms from the United States. In response, Trump tweeted yesterday that the White House will... |
Watch a Japanese spacecraft grab another sample from an asteroid Posted: 27 Jul 2019 07:00 AM PDT JAXA A camera has successfully recorded a Japanese spacecraft's attempt to grab a second sample from a distant asteroid. While the actual sample collection happened earlier in July, a video made of images taken during the maneuver was just released on Friday, July 26th. The sample-collecting spacecraft, Hayabusa2, has been in orbit around the asteroid Ryugu since July 2018, and it has already delivered robots and rovers to the asteroid. In the new video, you can see the shadow of the spacecraft grow steadily as it nears the surface of the asteroid. As the outstretched sample-collecting limb makes contact, a flurry of dust and rocks explodes from the surface while the spacecraft quickly ascends back into space.

Sony’s wearable AC will arrive too late to save you from this year’s heatwave Posted: 27 Jul 2019 06:00 AM PDT Image: Sony First Flight Sony has announced the Reon Pocket, a small cooling device that you can wear like a portable air conditioner. It's currently live on Sony's crowdfunding website, where prices start at ¥12,760 (about $117). SlashGear notes that as well as cooling you during hot days, the device, which slots into the back pocket of a specially designed T-shirt, can also warm you up during the winter. Unfortunately, the March 2020 ship date means that the Reon Pocket will arrive too late for this year's heatwave. Here in the UK (where it's important to understand we are not prepared to deal with anything resembling hot weather) it's 38.1 degrees Celsius (100.5 degrees Fahrenheit), the second hottest day ever recorded in the country according to BBC News.
