Bon Iver owns a Tesla called ‘John Teshla’ Posted: 14 Aug 2019 02:56 PM PDT WireImage Pitchfork published a terrific profile of Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver, aka the guy who writes songs so mournful that he turned a generation of sad boys into sad men. Jeremy D. Larson's piece is rich with details about the Eau Claire County crooner, but the best one is in the first sentence: "Justin Vernon lights a blunt as he charges his Tesla, which is affectionately named John Teshla." It's hilarious imagining that the man, famous for writing sad tunes alone in the woods, drives the automobile preferred by Jake Paul. But it's even better that he's named it after a pun on everyone's favorite former Entertainment Tonight host and composer of the best sports theme song. While we're talking about Bon Iver, I've actually been thinking a lot... |
Amazon will now donate unsold warehouse merchandize by default instead of trashing it Posted: 14 Aug 2019 02:48 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Amazon has unveiled a new program today in the US and UK that will donate unwanted products from third-party Marketplace sellers instead of sending them to the garbage dump. The new program, called Fulfilled by Amazon Donations, will see hundreds of thousands of products third-party vendors were unable to sell go to US nonprofits and a series of UK charities like Barnardo's, Newlife, and the Salvation Army. Previously, Amazon reportedly trashed products left in its warehouses that sellers were unable to offload. Oftentimes, products are left in warehouses because they were returned, or certain batches of inventory contain some type of defect. CNBC originally reported the news earlier today. |
Amazon’s Wheel of Time show has a cast of unknowns but big ambitions Posted: 14 Aug 2019 02:22 PM PDT Amazon's upcoming Lord of the Rings show might be getting most of the attention around the streaming service's big-budget fantasy adaptations, but the company has just announced casting for nearly all the key characters in its other doorstop fantasy novel show: Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time. The show announced its cast for the books' five central characters: Madeleine Madden as Egwene al'Vere, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al'Meara, and Josha Stradowski as Rand al'Thor. Jordan's original 15-book epic, which puts even the Harry Potter or A Song of Ice and Fire series to shame in terms of sheer page count,... |
8chan owner Jim Watkins subpoenaed to testify before House committee Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:46 PM PDT Photo by Gabriella Demczuk/Getty Images The House Homeland Security Committee subpoenaed the owner of 8chan, Jim Watkins, on Wednesday in an attempt to force the Philippines-based entrepreneur to testify before lawmakers next month. The subpoena follows a series of white supremacist-inspired attacks across the world this year, many of which were linked to 8chan. "We have questions on what is being done to counter this trend so we can be sure it is being properly addressed," Reps. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Mike Rogers (R-AL) said in a statement. "Receiving testimony from Mr. Watkins is critical to our oversight on this matter." The subpoena requests that Watkins testify before the committee on September 5th at 9:30AM. Watkins has... |
Caviar employees claim DoorDash and Square are mistreating them over acquisition offers Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:44 PM PDT Photo: DoorDash A group of Caviar employees has banded together to request a good faith renegotiation from DoorDash and Square, claiming mistreatment in the job transition process as DoorDash finalizes its plans to acquire Caviar from the payment company. In a letter provided to The Verge, anonymous Caviar employees say DoorDash and Square did not offer them fair compensation packages in regard to unvested shares and upcoming promotions that were formerly on the Caviar financial cycle. The workers also claim that DoorDash would not initially allow employees to discuss the status of their work visas with immigration lawyers until they signed the un-negotiated offers. The stance has since been reversed, but the group claim a number of employees signed... |
Facebook is simplifying group privacy settings and adding admin tools for safety Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:41 PM PDT Facebook announced today that it's updating its group privacy settings and working to better moderate bad content breaking the platform's rules. The platform is renaming its confusing public, closed, and secret group settings to the slightly more straightforward public and private settings, with the option to make private groups visible or hidden to non-members. The new settings will also provide more control for admins and members, giving admins more moderation tools and members the option to see the group's history and preview its content before accepting or declining an invitation. The new group settings are also part of the Safe Communities Initiative that the company started two years ago, in an effort to monitor and detect bad... |

We knew a second season was coming, but today's big reveal is that the second season will be the show's last, hinting that it has some big things in store — like the appearance of Kylo Ren, the volatile leader of the imperialist First Order from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Star Wars Resistance follows a young Resistance pilot named Kazuda Xiono and the crew of the Colossus, a refueling station once controlled by the First Order. Today's trailer shows the crew of the Colossus fleeing from the First Order as Tam Ryvora, who defected from the Colossus to join the First Order at the end of the first season, begins her career... |
Virtual desktops finally come to Chrome OS Posted: 14 Aug 2019 01:02 PM PDT Photo by James Bareham / The Verge The latest version of Chrome OS is rolling out to Chromebooks now and it comes with a lot more new features than usual. The biggest one, as noted by Android Police, is the addition of virtual desktops. You'll be able to switch between up to four different desktops with their own window layouts. When you swipe up to view all windows in the overview mode, you should see a new button in the upper right corner labeled "New Desk," which will create a new space where you can drag windows. It's not all that different from how Apple does it in Mission Control on the Mac. You should then be able to use a four-finger swipe to switch between them. Google has also launched a new web app that shows the latest features available on Chrome OS. Since... |
Marvel and Stitcher announce a new podcast based on the Marvels comic miniseries Posted: 14 Aug 2019 12:31 PM PDT Marvel and Stitcher have announced their next superhero podcast partnership: a radio drama adaptation of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross' limited Marvels series, which sees news photographer Phil Sheldon trying to get by in the chaos of a superhero world. The podcast marks the third collaboration between Marvel and Stitcher, following Wolverine: The Long Night and its sequel Wolverine: The Lost Trail. The scripted Marvels series is meant to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the comics series, and it will largely follow the same story, seeing Sheldon (and other ordinary, non-superpowered people) deal with the aftermath of an attempted invasion by the world-devouring Galactus and his battle with the Fantastic Four. |
Here’s where you can preorder the Sega Genesis Mini console Posted: 14 Aug 2019 12:14 PM PDT Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Sega's miniature Genesis console, the Genesis Mini, will come out on September 19th, but it's available for preorder now at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, and Walmart. Preorders have actually been open for a few months, but there's more incentive to put your money down. Today, August 14th, is the 30th anniversary of the console's original launch in the US, and The Verge's Andrew Webster posted everything you'd want to know about the mini retro console. Some of what you'll get with the purchase of the Genesis Mini is expected, including an HDMI cable; power adapter; and a miniaturized, lovingly re-created version of the Genesis console. But like Nintendo's NES Classic and SNES Classic, Sega has gone the extra mile for Genesis (Mega Drive,... |
