The voice-controlled standing desk will soon be a thing you can buy Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:55 PM PDT Standing desks were a popular idea, motors made them more convenient, and programmable presets to raise and lower them to your preferred height — with a button — are the most convenient yet. The $552-and-up VertDesk V3 with Voice Control is taking what must feel like the next logical step: it's a voice-activated standing desk that allows iPhone users to move their desk up and down using only their voice, starting this September. I don't really need that level of comfort personally. I mean, if I have to stand up anyhow, why not push a button at the same time? But it sounds like I wouldn't have to sacrifice anything for voice, either: I could customize two presets for sitting and standing, and leave two more presets... |
Mario Kart Tour is coming out on September 25th Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:02 PM PDT Nintendo's long-awaited and delayed Mario Kart smartphone game is almost here. Mario Kart Tour will be released on September 25th, according to a tweet from the company. The release date presumably applies to both iOS and Android devices, although the game's beta program was Android-only. That beta revealed Mario Kart Tour's overwrought free-to-play monetization model, involving lots of microtransactions and cool-down timers. None of it should be a surprise for anyone who's seen Nintendo's other mobile games, like Fire Emblem Heroes and Dr. Mario World, but it's possible the company might have tweaked the balance following feedback from the beta. Pre-registration for Mario Kart Tour is available now.

Instagram’s latest assault on Snapchat is a messaging app called Threads Posted: 26 Aug 2019 03:04 PM PDT The working logo for Threads, a new messaging app from Facebook and Instagram | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Facebook is developing a new messaging app called Threads that is meant to promote constant, intimate sharing between users and their closest friends, The Verge has learned. Threads, which is designed as a companion app to Instagram, invites users to automatically share their location, speed, and battery life with friends, along with more typical text, photo, and video messages using Instagram's creative tools. The app, which is designed for sharing with your "close friends" list on Instagram, is now being tested internally at Facebook. Instagram declined to comment. In May, Instagram ceased work on Direct, a standalone messaging app that it had been developing since late 2017. At the time, executives said that beta testers were... |
As a last resort, Andrew Yang proposes space mirrors to save the planet Posted: 26 Aug 2019 02:26 PM PDT Photo by Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images Presidential hopeful Andrew Yang has delivered a climate plan that fleshes out his dreams for a geoengineered world. According to his proposal, which was released on August 26th, it'll take 20 years, $4.87 trillion, and maybe even space mirrors to prevent a climate catastrophe. Similar to other Democratic candidates, including former Vice President Joe Biden and former Rep. Beto O'Rourke, Yang wants the US to get to net-zero carbon emissions by midcentury — although he tries to one-up their plans by setting a goal of 2049 rather than 2050. Achieving net-zero emissions means that the country would successfully capture as much carbon as it puts into the environment. To get there, the US would need to significantly cut down on its use of... |
Apple shelves tech that would have let you text off the grid Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:31 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple has reportedly put a technology for iPhones on hold that would have let people send text messages to other iPhones over a 900MHz radio spectrum that's typically used for dispatchers in the utility and manufacturing industries, allowing the phones to act like walkie-talkies for texts, according to The Information. It appears this would have been different than Apple's Walkie-Talkie feature for the Apple Watch, which is essentially a push-to-talk (PTT) FaceTime Audio call. The Information says Apple and Intel were working together on the technology, which would have been integrated into Intel chips in future iPhones, before it was put on hold. At Apple, the project reportedly went by Project OGRS (pronounced "ogres"), which is likely... |
Apple issues a quick fix for a fix that was unfixed Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:25 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple pushed out a software update today to repair a problem that it had previously patched — and then somehow unpatched. Update 12.4.1 introduces a fix for a vulnerability in which, according to Apple, "a malicious application may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges" — a fix that was originally introduced back in May, and removed in June. Here's what happened: The patch was originally issued on May 13th via iOS 12.3 to safeguard Apple mobile devices (iPhone 5S and later, iPad Air and later, and the sixth-generation iPod touch) from a vulnerability which could open them to jailbreaking. All good — until a new update, iOS 12.4, inadvertently undid the patch and once again made the devices susceptible to the attack,... |
Palantir forced out of job fair after outcry over ICE contracts Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:21 PM PDT palantir logo In September, the LGBTQ tech organization Lesbians Who Tech will throw its annual conference in New York, including a range of high-profile speakers, breakout sessions, and a job fair aiming to place talented LGBTQ employees at high-profile firms. Sponsors include some of the biggest names in tech, including Google, Oculus, and Verizon. Last week, that list included Palantir, too — but in the days since, Palantir has been discreetly removed from that list. The company's money has been refunded and it no longer has any role in the job fair, which will proceed as if Palantir had never been a sponsor. Reached by The Verge, Lesbians Who Tech confirmed the dropped sponsorship, saying it was the result of public objection to Palantir's recent... |
Porsche’s first EV breaks a record Porsche invented Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:19 PM PDT Porsche's first EV, the Taycan, has set a new record for the fastest lap by a four-door electric sports car at the hallowed Nürburgring in Germany. The previous record-holder was... well, probably no one, since Porsche is kind of stretching here in the name of claiming that the Taycan set a record. Automakers love bragging rights, and the Nürburgring's Nordschleife course is one of the prime battlegrounds. But over the years, the limits of the track have mostly been explored, and so there's not as much rarefied air left for companies who want to claim they were the fastest around the 12.9-mile course. This means automakers are willing to make all sorts of increasingly... |
In the first trailer for Apple TV Plus’ Dickinson, the famous poet gets turnt Posted: 26 Aug 2019 01:15 PM PDT Apple has released a trailer for its upcoming Apple TV Plus original series Dickinson. It's a half-hour anachronistic comedy show starring Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Pitch Perfect 2 and 3) as the eponymous poet Emily Dickinson. Per Apple's capsule description, "Dickinson audaciously explores the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of rebellious young poet Emily Dickinson." The show was created by Alena Smith, who previously worked on The Affair and The Newsroom. The brief trailer gives a very different perspective on Dickinson, who was traditionally portrayed as a shy... |
RavPower’s small, powerful 61W USB-C wall charger is more affordable today Posted: 26 Aug 2019 12:18 PM PDT Ravpower RavPower's gallium nitride (GaN) USB-C chargers are some of the fastest, most energy efficient, and smallest options around. If you use a device that charges via USB-C, you'll want to know about this deal on a 61W wall charger, which reduces the usual price by almost half. Normally $49.99, you can get the charger for $26.99 by clipping the coupon on the Amazon product page, then entering the offer code 9TO5UXE8 at checkout. As an example, 61 watts is enough power to charge a 13-inch MacBook Pro at full speed. It also works with devices that don't pull juice at that speed, like the iPad Pro, a phone, the Nintendo Switch, and more. If you have a laptop that requires, say, an 85W charger, this won't charge it as fast, though it could make... |
