Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang went full influencer on the debate stage Thursday night.

In his opening remarks, Yang announced that he would be giving away $120,000 through the course of the next year as part of a pilot program for his campaign's key policy plan: universal basic income, or what he refers to as the "Freedom Dividend."

"In America today, everything revolves around the all-mighty dollar," Yang said. "It's time to trust ourselves more than our politicians. That's why I'm going to do something unprecedented tonight. My campaign will now give a Freedom Dividend of $1,000 a month for an entire year to 10 American families."

Yang was a longshot...

Steam will now show you more games you might actually want to buy

The Epic Games Store is luring some smaller developers away from Steam, but Valve has just made behind-the-scenes changes that might keep others from jumping ship — and could put more indie games in front of gamers who actually want to buy them.

While gamers probably already know how to search for big releases like Gears 5, Valve admits that those big games have bumped smaller ones from being recommended, so it's now planning to surface more small games and fewer popular ones in its recommendation feeds.

Valve says that bugs were partly to blame for that problem:

Previously, when customers would look for games by browsing the recommendation feed at the bottom of the homepage or the "More Like This" sections, they weren't seeing as many...

Google is changing its search algorithm to prioritize original news reporting

Google is changing its news search algorithms again, in a move that's sure to annoy everybody. Today's announcement is that the company is going to try to emphasize "original reporting," which it will "elevate" in its search results. To do so, it has distributed new instructions to its cadre of 10,000+ human reviewers, whose feedback helps train the Google algorithm that actually delivers search rankings.

It will annoy everybody because fundamentally nobody outside Google really knows exactly what the repercussions of this change will be (and maybe people inside Google don't know either). Sometimes these search changes are minor, other times these announcements fundamentally change the business models of hundreds of websites. Plus,...

Kickstarter faces union backlash after firing two organizers

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 03:40 PM PDT

Kickstarter is facing blowback after firing two employees involved in its ongoing unionization effort, as first reported by Slate. Both employees were dismissed over the past eight days, leading to concerns that the firings may be part of a broader retaliation effort. US labor law forbids employers from firing or otherwise reprimanding employees for taking part in unionization efforts.

One of the employees, Taylor Moore, told The Verge that he believed he had been fired in connection with his unionizing efforts. "This morning after six years of pouring my life into the mission, people, and creators of Kickstarter, I was fired for union organizing," Moore said. "Last week another member of the union organizing committee was fired and we...

Hulu dropped support for Google’s Daydream VR

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 02:50 PM PDT

Hulu was a launch partner for Google's Android-based Daydream VR platform in 2016. But as Variety noted today, the streaming service no longer supports Daydream. Hulu's website states that support was dropped in a July update, although people with older versions of the app can still access the VR experience.

This is part of a long decline for the Daydream platform. HBO, another early partner, dropped support in January. Google Play Movies & TV also stopped supporting Daydream in mid-2019. (The Netflix VR app remains available through Google Play.) Hulu's website still lists support for most other VR platforms, including Sony's PlayStation VR, Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality, and multiple Oculus headsets. So there are still plenty of...

J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot Productions have signed a deal with AT&T-owned WarnerMedia, the company announced today. The deal is reportedly worth $250 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The partnership means that Bad Robot will produce original series and films for WarnerMedia and its various divisions, including HBO and Warner Bros. Pictures. It also marks the first time that Bad Robot's video games and digital divisions will also operate under one roof.

It's unclear if the deal limits Abrams to only directing and producing films and series for WarnerMedia properties, but his ongoing projects at Paramount Pictures (Bad Robot's former feature home) and his Star Wars work are still continuing. Bad Robot...

Spotify is cracking down on family plan sharing again by asking for user locations

Spotify is cracking down on family plan sharing — again. According to a new set of terms and conditions for the plan that the company published back in August, Spotify is now requiring the primary account holder and everyone else on the plan to show proof that they reside at the same address, which it will now confirm from "time to time" by asking users to verify their addresses, as spotted by CNET.

This isn't the first time that Spotify has tried to crack down on customers taking advantage of family plan sharing. The company sent out a similar warning last year that asked users to confirm their exact GPS coordinates, but it ended the test shortly afterward, following privacy concerns.

Now, a slightly less invasive version of the...

How's that iPhone in your pocket feeling? Old? Outdated? Just fine, but you want to trade it in anyway? September is usually the time when people start thinking about trading in their current iPhone and upgrading to a new device. Aside from financing or signing up through a carrier, the cheapest way to go about getting a good deal on a new iPhone is to trade in your old one.

Trading in your iPhone is faster, easier, and safer than reselling. To get the best valuation for your iPhone, you'll want to follow these steps. Scratches, dents, and other imperfections may reduce what you get back, but, perfect or not, you're practically guaranteed to get at least something for your trade.

Mozilla wants to use people’s stories to shame YouTube into being better

Posted: 12 Sep 2019 12:33 PM PDT

The Verge

Mozilla is trying to shame YouTube into doing more to fix its numerous recommendation algorithm issues, many of which can lead users down dangerous content spirals.

With a new social media campaign called #YouTubeRegrets, Mozilla is asking people to submit their own experiences of falling down the recommendation rabbit hole, and discuss how they got from point A to point B. Everything is done through a Google Doc, which includes a little more information about the project.

"Once, at 2 a.m., you searched YouTube for 'Did aliens build Stonehenge?' Ever since, your YouTube recommendations have been a mess: Roswell, wormholes, Illuminati," Mozilla writes. "YouTube's recommendation engine can lead users down bizarre rabbit holes — and...

Cody Wilson, former head of 3D-printed gun company Defense Distributed, has been sentenced to seven years of probation in a plea deal over sexually assaulting an underage girl. The Associated Press reported today that Wilson will register as a sex offender and serve 475 hours of community service. He also won't be able to own a gun while on probation, and he will pay a $1,200 fine and $4,840 in restitution to the victim.

Wilson was originally charged with second-degree sexual assault, but he pleaded guilty in August to the lesser offense of "injury to a child." Prosecutors reportedly "met extensively with the victim and her parents" before making the decision. Despite this, according to Ars Technica, a judge asserted that "there is...
