On Saturday, Joi Ito resigned from his position as director of the MIT Media Lab, according to an email sent to The New York Times.

"After giving the matter a great deal of thought over the past several days and weeks," Ito wrote in the email, "I think that it is best that I resign as director of the media lab and as a professor and employee of the Institute, effective immediately."

The resignation comes after mounting concern over Ito's ties with Jeffrey Epstein, a serial rapist and billionaire who had been a significant donor to the lab and to MIT. Epstein donated as much as $800,000 to MIT-related projects over the years, including Ito's own venture fund.

9 new trailers you should watch this week

Kyle Kaplan

I just finished watching the new season of Netflix's Mindhunter. The second season felt a lot stronger than the first; it had a mostly season-long arc that felt mostly conclusive. This season was also really smart about showing the ambiguity in their work, leaving the ending just a little open and uneasy.

The show continues to excel at finding tension and drama in long, descriptive conversations. It's basically My Dinner with [a serial killer], with some connective tissue in between.

I wish the show would feel more confident about just how good it is at these sequences, though. Far too often, it's worried about making anything and everything tense. Dramatic music pumps in during conversations that'd be more tense without it, and it...

Apple will live stream its iPhone 11 event on YouTube for the first time

Posted: 07 Sep 2019 04:18 AM PDT

Apple is planning to stream its iPhone 11 event on Google's YouTube platform on Tuesday. It will mark the first time that Apple has ever streamed one of the company's events on YouTube, and it will greatly expand the amount of people able to view the stream. Last year Apple extended its iPhone event stream to Twitter, and the company has been gradually increasing the availability of its stream in recent years.

Windows 10 users started to gain access to the stream back in 2015, thanks to Microsoft's Edge browser. Apple's event streams used to be limited to Safari and Edge on the desktop, but Apple also opened them up to Chrome and Firefox last year at WWDC.

We're expecting Apple to unveil three new iPhone models on Tuesday, and The Verge...

Microsoft’s quirky musical video mocks Vista, Windows Phone, and more

Posted: 07 Sep 2019 01:49 AM PDT

150 full-time employees and interns at Microsoft have volunteered their mornings, weekends, and nights to create a Microsoft musical video. The video was shot in various buildings at Microsoft's corporate campus in Redmond, Washington and it features interns and staff members singing and dancing about how it's "all happening here."

It starts off with a section about co-founder Bill Gates, before some classic lines like "all around the world our products are well known, except for when we tried to make a phone!" The musical even briefly acknowledges the company missing a beat with Vista, and features former CEO Steve Ballmer's famous "developers, developers, developers" chant.

We've seen some pretty odd videos from Microsoft over the...

Roku TV is coming to the UK with Hisense’s upcoming sets

Roku is bringing its TV operating system outside of North America for the first time, the company announced at IFA today. Hisense UK will release its first TVs powered by Roku in the fourth quarter of this year. Previously, Roku's television operating system has only been available in North America where it's been featured in TVs from TCL, Sharp, and Hisense's US arm.

We've always liked Roku's TV operating system, so it's great to see it launch outside of North America. When we reviewed last year's TCL 6-Series television, for example, we found that Roku's software was simple and easy to use. It also, crucially, has pretty much every streaming app you could ask for. That's more than what could have been said for Amazon's competing Fire...
