Watch the final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Posted: 21 Oct 2019 06:52 PM PDT

The Skywalker saga that started more than 40 years ago in Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope is finally coming to an end, and the final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker teases an epic conclusion. The trailer debuted tonight during ESPN's Monday Night Football matchup between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets.

Landing a finale is often considered one of the most difficult feats in Hollywood, whether it's a film franchise or TV series. The Rise of Skywalker, which sees the final battle between the Resistance and the First Order, will give the story a meaningful end, according to director J.J. Abrams. "We went into this thing knowing it has to be an ending. We're not screwing around," Abrams told Entertainment...

Adobe is reportedly bringing Illustrator to the iPad in 2020

Last fall, Adobe announced that "real Photoshop" would be coming to the iPad sometime this year. We're still waiting for that to happen — the app is in beta testing at the moment — but it seems Adobe is charging ahead with plans to bring more of its Creative Cloud software to Apple's tablet, as Bloomberg now reports the next Adobe CC app for the iPad will be Illustrator.

According to the report, Adobe may preview Illustrator for iPad at its Adobe Max conference in early November and plans to launch the full version some time in 2020. The app is expected to "mirror" many features from the desktop version of Illustrator, Bloomberg says, which sounds a lot like what Adobe said it would be doing with Photoshop.

Google got wireless charging right on the Pixel 4

Google sort of botched wireless charging on the Pixel 3 last year. Only customers who bought the company's own Pixel Stand accessory and a very small selection of third-party chargers were able to juice up the Pixel 3 at the fastest possible wireless charging speeds. Everyone else using their existing mats and charging stands were limited to a much slower 5-watt charge. But Google has righted this mistake with the Pixel 4.

According to Mishaal Rahman of XDADevelopers, the Pixel 4 and 4 XL support 11-watt wireless charging. This is confirmed on a page for the device at the Wireless Power Consortium, and has also been further verified through direct testing.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been appointed chairman of the advisory board for Tsinghua University's economics school in Beijing, according to local news reports and a Chinese-language meeting summary noted by Apple Insider.

Cook will reportedly assume the role for the next three years, and recently acted as chairman for a meeting, as the South China Morning Post notes. Cook has been on the board in the past, as has Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who recently took on Chinese censorship in a public speech about free expression. Major Chinese government officials have also served on the board, as the Post reports. Cook succeeds Breyer Capital founder Jim Breyer in the role.

While Cook isn't the only tech...

Music software company Serato has released new official versions of its DJ Pro and DJ Lite software that are fully supported in macOS Catalina. The updated software works with Apple's new Music app, which replaced iTunes in Apple's latest desktop OS refresh, and libraries in Music can automatically load in the updated Serato DJ Pro and DJ Lite.

Along with updating its DJ software, Serato has also released a new version of its beat-making software Serato Studio that's supported in Catalina. However, not all Serato products are in the clear. Serato Sample and Pitch 'n Time Pro and LE are still not compatible with Catalina, but the company says it's actively working on updates. Additionally, Serato warns there is still some DJ hardware from...

Nearly two-thirds of Uber customers don’t tip their drivers, study says

Only 1 percent of Uber customers always tip, while nearly 60 percent never do, according to a new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). The average tip is 50 cents a ride, but for those who do tip, the average is more like $3. Men are more likely to tip than women, but female drivers get tipped more than male ones.

Tipping has long been a source of fierce debate, especially as it relates to ride-hailing companies like Uber. For years, the company rejected efforts to add a tipping option to its app, arguing it would overly complicate the seamlessness of the experience. But Uber eventually caved and now drivers earn hundreds of millions of dollars in tips every year. The NBER study on tipping with Uber is sure to...

TikTok removes two dozen ISIS propaganda accounts

Islamic State propagandists are reportedly trying to exploit social media app TikTok as a recruiting tool. The Wall Street Journal says social media monitoring agency Storyful recently identified around two dozen ISIS-related accounts, all of which have since been removed. The accounts posted videos aimed at recruiting followers and bolstering support for the terrorist group — featuring Islamic State anthems and footage of corpses and ISIS fighters.

It's not clear how big a presence ISIS has on TikTok. Terrorist propaganda is a perennial issue for social media platforms. Companies like Facebook and Google share a database of known terrorist imagery that can be automatically removed when it's detected online. They've also faced (and won)...

Netflix tracks shows by measuring ‘starters,’ ‘watchers,’ and ‘completers’

Netflix is trying to be more transparent with its creatives about how it counts a view on an original series or movie, and a letter sent to the British government includes three new descriptors: starters, watchers, and completers.

The three new categories are part of the most in-depth look yet at a reported method that helps Netflix decide whether a show should be canceled. According to a letter sent to a UK Parliament committee, Netflix tracks ratings with those three metrics with directors and producers, and based on previous reports, may use that breakdown to determine if a show is worth renewing. The letter adds that Netflix believes "these two metrics will give our creative partners a broader understanding of how members engage...

NordVPN reveals server breach that could have let attacker monitor traffic

NordVPN says one of its servers was breached in March 2018, exposing some of the browsing habits of customers who were using the VPN service to keep their data private. NordVPN says the server, located in Finland, did not contain activity logs, usernames, or passwords. But the attacker would have been able to see what websites users were visiting during that time, a company advisor said, although the content of the websites likely would have been hidden due to encryption.

Over the past couple years, NordVPN has become a lot more popular as it's gone on a heavy advertising push. You'll often hear NordVPN ads in the middle of podcasts, or find a YouTube host pausing to talk about how NordVPN can protect your privacy by masking your...
