Blizzard Entertainment may be feeling the effects of its controversial ban of Hong Kong Hearthstone player Ng "Blitzchung" Wai Chung for quite some time. The company not only faced a widespread player boycott, condemnations from US lawmakers, and numerous employee walkouts over the decision, but it also lost a key sponsor of its international gaming competitions.

According to The Daily Beast, Mitsubishi decided to pull sponsorships of Blizzard e-sports events after the company banned Wai Chung for voicing support for the Hong Kong protesters in a televised post-game interview earlier this month. Reddit users first noticed the disappearance of the Mitsubishi logo during a recent Asia Pacific Hearthstone tournament, and the company...

Here’s what HBO Max looks like

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 05:36 PM PDT

HBO Max, AT&T's upcoming $15 a month streaming video service, looks nothing like its HBO Now counterpart.

Here's a brief tour:

AT&T and WarnerMedia showed off the first look at its product interface at a special investor event today, with Andy Forssell, executive vice president and general manager, speaking about the importance of human curation, instead of simply relying on algorithms like Netflix and other competitors. That's why HBO's "Recommended by Humans" feature, something the company rolled out earlier this year, is getting a big lift on HBO Max. Celebrities will now have pages where they can list their own recommendations. HBO Max customers can then use those recommendation pages to select a movie or TV show directly from that...

HBO announces new Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 05:05 PM PDT

HBO has ordered a Game of Thrones spinoff series, House of the Dragon, straight to series.

The new prequel is written by Ryan Condal (Colony), with George R.R. Martin set to co-executive produce. The project is based on Martin's 2019 book Fire and Blood, and is a history of House Targaryen (the ancestors of Daenerys) as they fight through a civil war. The series is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

HBO executive Casey Bloys made the announcement at an event for HBO Max, AT&T's streaming service coming May 2020. The news comes just hours after news broke that HBO canceled a previously announced Game of Thrones spinoff series.

It appears part of the reason HBO pushed forward with House of the Dragon is because the...

HBO Max launches in May 2020 for $14.99 a month

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 04:53 PM PDT

HBO Max, AT&T's big foray into streaming, will launch in May 2020 for per $14.99 a month, the company announced at a special event held for investors. An ad-supported tier will reportedly launch in 2021.

Existing HBO subscribers on AT&T (approximately 10 million) and HBO Now direct billing subscribers will get HBO Max for free. Customers who subscribe to AT&T's premium video, mobile and broadband packages will be offered bundles at launch with HBO Max at no additional cost, according to an AT&T press release.

The $14.99 pricing tier makes it one of the most expensive in the shifting streaming landscape. Apple TV Plus is only $4.99 a month, while Disney+ is sitting at $6.99 a month. AT&T is in a tricky spot. HBO Now, its other...

HBO Max event: Rick and Morty, Green Lantern, and all the TV announcements

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 04:16 PM PDT

Adult Swim

AT&T's special HBO Max preview day came chock-full of programming announcements, ranging from a new Green Lantern-inspired show from Arrow and Flash producer Greg Berlanti to Rick and Morty on HBO Max.

HBO Max, which launches in May, is AT&T's answer to Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+. It has a few advantages heading into the streaming wars, especially over competitors like Apple. WarnerMedia is home to thousands of movies and TV shows that will be available at launch. Some of its properties come with dedicated fans — Friends, for example, or the DC Extended Universe (Batman v Superman, Aquaman). There are also a number of prestige series from its most prestigious network, HBO.

Having an extensive catalog is important (look at Disney+), but...

Elon Musk donates $1 million to plant trees after testifying that he’s cash-poor

Elon Musk has donated $1 million worth of trees ($1 per tree) to YouTuber Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson, who's currently campaigning to raise $20 million from fellow YouTube celebrities for a climate change fundraising effort. That's intriguing, because Musk said in sworn testimony recently that he's financially illiquid.

Musk told the YouTuber he would make the donation on Twitter after some nudging by Marques "MKBHD" Brownlee, who has interviewed Musk in the past and is an avid Tesla fan. Musk initially showed interest yesterday, asking on Twitter about the type of trees being planted as part of MrBeast's fundraising effort. MrBeast responded that the trees are being planted on every continent save Antarctica; the type of tree depends on...

In the escalating fight between Twitch and Mixer, YouTube is the real winner

The live-streaming wars aren't really about streaming at all: they're about the future of live television. The combatants — Twitch, Mixer, and Caffeine, at the moment, although Facebook and YouTube shouldn't be counted out just yet — have their own visions for what that looks like, and what it should mean for consumers. To that end, Twitch, Mixer, and Caffeine have begun to compete in earnest over exclusive deals for big names in streaming.

What's interesting about those deals is that they seem to overlook the internet video elephant in the room: YouTube. Most of the biggest live-streamers on the internet also post videos of their streams to the site, which nets them extra money without making them do more work. That means YouTube is...

Apple AirPods Pro hands-on: the noise cancellation really works

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:28 PM PDT

Apple's new AirPods Pro will hit stores beginning tomorrow, October 30th, and today, I got a chance to give them a try and put the company's active noise cancellation to the test. As someone who has never been able to fully enjoy the regular AirPods — they just don't fit my ears securely — the in-ear design of the AirPods Pro is super appealing.

Three silicone tip sizes come in the box, and iOS has a built-in fit test that briefly plays a bit of music to check whether you've got a good seal. An internal-facing microphone compares what you're hearing to what the speaker driver is putting out. If there's too much of a difference, the test will tell you to adjust the fit or try a different size and re-run it.

How to share your audio in iOS 13

Posted: 29 Oct 2019 01:28 PM PDT

Last year, when I was planning to fly to Japan with my fiancée, we downloaded movies to my iPhone so that we could watch them together on the plane. Shortly before we left, though, we realized we wouldn't be able to use our AirPods on the same phone. Instead, to share audio, we had to cobble together a Lightning-to-headphone jack adapter, a cheap headphone splitter from our local pharmacy, and two pairs of Bose headphones that we borrowed from family. It was a lot of cords — and a lot of trouble.

Now Apple has a solution for the exact problem we ran into. If you're running iOS 13.1 or iPadOS 13.1 or later, you can share the audio from one iOS device to two pairs of AirPods or compatible Beats headphones. It's really handy — my fiancée...

If you're already looking for Black Friday 2019 deals, Walmart is among the first of the major retailers to serve them up. It's hard to consider them as true Black Friday deals since they're launching in late October. Nevertheless, the deals are good, and they are likely a strong sign of what other sale prices are expected in the next few weeks.

As for what's discounted right now, we're seeing the best prices yet on the Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + LTE, 38mm), the Xbox One S gaming console, the sixth-generation iPad, and a lot more. We'll be updating this post as new Walmart deals arrive from now until Black Friday, which kicks off on Friday, November 29th.
