Star Wars Instant Pots invite you to cook out of Chewbacca’s chest Posted: 26 Nov 2019 05:06 PM PST Image: Williams Sonoma Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is coming out in less than a month, and the tsunami of Star Wars-themed merchandise is finally starting to hit. The latest Star Wars-branded gear you can buy? An Instant Pot, courtesy of an exclusive partnership with Williams Sonoma. This product should be made for me. I love Star Wars. I love my Instant Pot. But I don't really like these: The R2-D2 and BB-8 ones are kind of fun, I'll give them that. I can deal with the headcanon of pretending that droids from the movies can also be my personal robots that cook my lentil soup. And the BB-8 one is smaller than the rest of the collection, at three quarts! Aww. The Darth Vader or Stormtrooper-themed ones are just... |
Controversial YouTuber banned from Patreon after alleged doxxing Posted: 26 Nov 2019 05:01 PM PST On Tuesday, Patreon banned the controversial YouTuber Onision, after he allegedly doxxed a woman who says he harassed her and manipulated her into a sexual relationship. Onision, who is also known as Gregory Jackson and James Jackson, has been a popular creator for nearly a decade on YouTube, often including a rotating cast of fans, friends and girlfriends in his videos. At least six women are now accusing him of harassment and emotional abuse. On Sunday night, Onision tweeted screenshots of private text messages between himself and another YouTuber, Billie Dawn Webb. Webb is a former fan who recently accused Onision of pressuring her into sex with him and his current partner. One of... |
Alexa’s voice can now express disappointment and excitement Posted: 26 Nov 2019 03:54 PM PST Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge You might hear a little more emotion from Alexa's vaguely-robotic voice some time soon, as Amazon announced today that developers can now have Alexa respond to questions from US users with a "happy/excited" or a "disappointed/empathetic" tone. Amazon suggests the happy/excited tone could be used when you answer a trivia question correctly, for example, and that the disappointed/empathetic tone could be used when you ask for a sports score and your favorite team has lost. (One day, I'm sure she'll express disappointment at some dumb question that I ask, and I'll deserve it.) If you want to hear the different voices for yourself, Amazon shared six examples, three for each emotion at increasing levels of excitement or disappointment: |
Rev bans kids from working as transcribers following reports of disturbing recordings Posted: 26 Nov 2019 03:06 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Transcription company Rev updated its Terms of Service agreement today following reports of workers unhappy with low pay and exposure to graphic files without warning. Most of the changes appear to be efforts to solidify its workers' classification as independent contractors, but there is one notable change: the company now requires transcribers to be at least 18, or older in some states. Prior to today's update, Rev's website explicitly stated it had "no age requirement" for working on transcriptions. US employment laws largely don't apply to the type of freelance labor used by Rev, "so there may be people under 16 working over 40 hours a week on Rev and that's not illegal," Veena Dubal, associate professor of law at the University of... |
Facebook is buying Beat Saber’s development studio Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:55 PM PST Facebook is acquiring Beat Games, the developer of popular (and excellent) virtual reality rhythm game Beat Saber. TechCrunch reported that Beat Games will keep operating independently, but it will become part of Oculus Studios, Facebook's VR gaming group. In a blog post, Oculus content director Mike Verdu said the game will keep releasing across all platforms, and the studio won't prioritize Oculus headsets for updates or new content like music packs. Oculus basically describes this purchase as a way to offer Beat Games — a tiny studio formerly known as Hyperbolic Magnetism — more development resources. Before its acquisition, Beat Saber had already started expanding its small original song catalog with new music packs, including songs... |
Google adds free Tomb Raider and Farming Simulator 19 to Stadia Pro subscription Posted: 26 Nov 2019 01:52 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Google today announced that its Stadia Pro premium subscription tier is getting two more free games starting in December. The titles are Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and Farming Simulator 19. You can purchase both titles right now on Stadia if you so choose. That puts the Stadia Pro free game offering at four games now, as the service launched alongside Stadia earlier this month with Destiny 2: The Collection and Samurai Shodown. To be clear, every current Stadia user is officially a Stadia Pro subscriber. Google effectively soft-launched the service two weeks ago ahead of a broader rollout next year, and the only option was to pay for the Founder or Premiere edition, which came with a controller, a Chromecast Ultra dongle, and a... |
X-rays reveal how the shutter button works on the iPhone Smart Battery Case Posted: 26 Nov 2019 12:57 PM PST Image: iFixit via Creative Electron Last week, Apple surprise-launched its lineup of Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max, and the cases have an intriguing new addition this year: a physical camera button. How the new button works was a bit of a mystery, as iPhones themselves don't have a button dedicated entirely to being a camera shutter. But now we know a little more about the mechanism, thanks to an X-ray of one of the cases done by iFixit and Creative Electron. If you look closely at the picture at the top of this post, you can see two thin circuits running down from the button toward the battery before they take a right turn to the circuit board, which connects to the Lightning port, which transmits data to and from the iPhone connected to... |
Twitter will remove inactive accounts and free up usernames in December Posted: 26 Nov 2019 12:30 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitter is sending out emails to owners of inactive accounts with a warning: sign in by December 11th, or your account will be history and its username will be up for grabs again. Any account that hasn't signed in for more than six months will receive the email alert. "As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we're working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter. Part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy," a spokesperson told The Verge by email. "We have begun proactive outreach to many accounts who have not logged into Twitter in over six... |
Pour one out for the Steam Controller, now on closeout sale for just $5 plus shipping Posted: 26 Nov 2019 12:14 PM PST Image: Sean Hollister / The Verge The Steam Autumn Sale has begun, allowing you to nab a copy of Resident Evil 2 for a mere $20 among other savings, but there's one deal that stands out from the pack — a $5 farewell to Valve's weirdly wonderful Steam Controller gamepad. Yes, you can now buy the Steam Controller for just $5 plus shipping ($13 total for me), and Valve confirms that this is the last batch of these gamepads that will ever be made. And while I can't recommend it wholeheartedly like I did when Valve discontinued its amazing Steam Link wireless HDMI cable-in-a-box, I will say that $13 is a pretty excellent price if you ever plug your PC into your television, or sling your PC games wirelessly to the Steam Link app on your phone and need an accurate solution. ... |
