Verizon confirms the next Galaxy Note will have 5G

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 05:47 PM PDT

If you follow phones, this won't be surprising to hear — the next Galaxy Note, presumably called the Galaxy Note 10, will support 5G cellular networks.

There are so very many reasons why this makes perfect sense, including:

But the best reason is that Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg explicitly said so yesterday, during the...

Verizon and T-Mobile agree much of the US won’t see the fast version of 5G

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 05:27 PM PDT

5G is here, but not all 5G is equal — there's the blazing-fast-but-barely-there millimeter wave 5G which has trouble covering wide areas and penetrating buildings, and the "sub-6GHz" frequency flavor of 5G that can be deployed more easily using existing spectrum.

And now, Verizon and T-Mobile are publicly admitting something that anyone could have predicted: good luck getting the fastest version of 5G unless you live in an urban metropolitan area.

"We all need to remind ourselves this is not a coverage spectrum," Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg told analysts on the company's Q1 2019 earnings call on Tuesday — just one day after T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray decried Verizon's 5G rollout as one that would "never reach rural America."

2019 has seen the most measles cases in 20 years, CDC says

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:58 PM PDT

Measles just hit a major milestone as it spreads across the country, infecting the most people since the year 2000, when public health officials declared the virus eliminated in the US. Thanks to the anti-vaccination movement, the virus has come roaring back.

The case count has climbed to 695 people infected across 22 different states, driven in part by outbreaks that have lingered in New York and Washington, according to a statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Stopping these ongoing outbreaks as soon as possible will be critical, the CDC says. "The longer these outbreaks continue, the greater the chance measles will again get a sustained foothold in the United States," the CDC said in a statement.

TikTok is no longer banned in India

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 04:23 PM PDT

Indian lawmakers said TikTok was encouraging the spread of explicit content and "cultural degradation" among youth, and then they successfully banned the short video app — but only for a week or so, because the TikTok ban has now been lifted. That's according to reports from Reuters, TechCrunch, CNN Business, and others.

Technically, TikTok's existing 120 million active monthly users weren't affected by the ban, because India's court order only kept new customers from downloading the app from Apple's App Store and the Google Play Store. But that didn't stop TikTok developer ByteDance from claiming it was suffering up to $500,000 in financial losses each day the ban stayed in effect, according to a court filing spotted by Reuters y...

Facebook Stories somehow hits 500 million daily users

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:10 PM PDT

Somehow, defying all expectations, people are using Facebook Stories. And not just a few people, but a lot — more than 500 million every day.

The new metric is the first time Facebook says its Stories product, which it initially ripped from Snapchat and deployed with wild success on Instagram, has reached parity in the main app and Messenger with its implementation on both Instagram and WhatsApp, two apps where the Stories format is arguably more useful and fitting to the respective platforms' overall product design. The last metric for Facebook Stories was a 300 million daily user milestone back in September. (Instagram Stories hit 500 million daily users in January, so it's likely more now, though the company isn't saying quite yet.)

Airbnb wants to create TV shows to convince people to travel more

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:09 PM PDT

Even Airbnb is getting into the TV game. According to Reuters, the hotel and rental platform is looking into building its own TV studio to produce short films, documentaries, and shows that it can use to promote travel and, by extension, its platform.

The idea isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. Reuters reports that Airbnb has, for a few years now, been looking into either partnering with existing production studios and entertainment companies or building out an internal studio of its own to produce shows and video content that would promote Airbnb guests and hosts, travel locales, and otherwise further transform its image into a travel lifestyle brand. Considering the number of travel and home decor-specific magazines, websites, and...

You can, and should, put yourself into an Avengers GIF

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:07 PM PDT

We've all imagined ourselves as superheroes at one point, and now there's a website that lets you swap faces with your favorite Avenger — just in time for Avengers: Endgame. The "Avenge Them" site isn't an official Marvel product, but does build off of the tech found in the Morphin app, which turns your mug into a 3D model to add to GIFs.

Currently, Avenge Them has 18 GIFs available, all of which will have you performing grandiose feats of heroism pulled from the Marvel movies. The selection covers a good range of Avengers heroes, including Star-Lord, Black Widow, Captain America, Black Panther, and more.

It takes about 30 seconds for the site to work you into each of the scenes, which isn't that long considering that it turns a flat...

Tesla lost $702 million last quarter after drop in Model 3 deliveries

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 02:25 PM PDT

Tesla lost $702 million in the first quarter of 2019, after posting back-to-back profits for the first time ever to finish out 2018, the company announced in an official filing Wednesday. CEO Elon Musk had predicted Tesla would slide back into the red on a February 28th call with the media. Telsa generated $4.5 billion in revenue for the quarter, which is down from $7.2 billion in the previous quarter, but up from $2.6 billion in the first quarter of 2018.

The company also announced it doesn't expect to turn a profit in the second quarter, either. Musk had previously guessed that Tesla would return to profitability for good starting this quarter. The $702 million loss was the company's fourth-worst quarterly loss since it became publicly...

Take a look at Spigen’s Galaxy Fold prototype cases

Posted: 24 Apr 2019 02:19 PM PDT

Although major design flaws with the Galaxy Fold have forced Samsung to delay its launch indefinitely, smartphone accessories maker Spigen is still continuing plans to develop cases for the phone. Spigen has three cases in development: the Tough Armor, Ultra Hybrid, and Thin Fit. After showing us some mock-ups in March, the company has now shared actual photos of some of its prototype cases.

Spigen notes that its Tough Armor case was the hardest to develop due to its focus on hinge protection. However, based on the photos, it looks like the exposed hinge still doesn't protect against the Galaxy Fold's greatest weakness — debris that can slip underneath the screen, according to the iFixit teardown.
